Christian Dior, born January 21, 1905

from Granville, France—died October 24,

1957, Montecatini, Italy, is a French fashion
designer, whose creations dominated world
fashion in the decade following World War II.

On 12 February 1947, Christian Dior launched

his first fashion collection for Spring–Summer
1947. The New Look was a revolutionary
era for women at the end of the 1940s.

Dior’s latest range for Fall 2018 delved
even further into politics. This season,
Chiuri elaborately reproduced magazine
covers and protest art of the late 1960s.

uprisings, which began with a series of student
protests against such topics as capitalism,
consumerism and conservative sexual values.

From 1997 to 2011, John Charles Galliano became
the creative director of Dior, who is now the creative
director of Paris-based fashion house Maison Margiela.

Saddle bag

First conceived in 1999 by former director John

Galliano and debuted in the spring/summer 2000
collection, the Saddle bag was quickly propelled
into the mainstream by celebrities slinging their slice
of Galliano’s Dior aesthetic over their shoulders.

After a few years, the Saddle eventually ceased
production. But it was Beyoncé who catapulted the
Saddle firmly back into the global fashion lexicon when,
in 2014, she was spotted grasping hers once again.

Two decades later and, considering fashion’s current

fondness for all things 1990s, Maria Grazia Chiuri,
current creative director of Dior, marked the Saddle 2.0’s
first outing at the Dior autumn/winter 2018 runway.
“I reconsidered it as an object capable of
characterising the identity of those who wear it,”
Chiuri explains of the design process. “The Saddle
bag is an emotive object that becomes a symbol of
individuality, capable of instantly communicating
something of the personality of those who choose it.”
From the initial sketch to the choosing of the perfect
shade and texture, to completing the piece with the
classic Christian Dior logo, the ‘It’ bag was conceived
through careful design and forward-thinking style.

The Saddle is skilfully and precisely stitched and

meticulously quality controlled down to the tiniest detail.
The Dior saddle bag was a thinly
veiled influencer ad campaign.

Under Federal Trade Commission laws in the US, and

Competition & Markets Authority rules in the UK, any posts
that are paid for or products gifted by a brand, must include
a clear notice that the post is an advert, or sponsored post.

saddle bag. But the strange thing is that very few of
them disclosed that it was actually a gift from Dior.

Since the campaign went live last week, web
searches for Dior Saddle bags are up nearly
1,000 per cent. Celebrities seem to be obsessed.
