The researchers of this project would love to express gratitude to our teacher Mr. Richards for
his very detailed guidance during this project.
The researchers would also like to thank the players who participated in the football match
organized by our group. They were very cooperative and disciplined throughout this process.
By the same token, the researchers would love to thank the referees who volunteered to officiate
the game and the support base that add excitement to the process.
Had it not been for the cooperation of fellow researchers the project would not have been
successfully completed, hence, congratulations are in order to each researcher who participated.
Finally, huge thank you to the almighty who sustained us throughout this project and provided
the necessary resources.

Introduction
A one day community six-a-side football match involving two community teams from the
Woodstock H/S area was organized by our sba mathematics group of four with the objective of
enabling us the students to apply mathematics in a real life context to determine the best passer
of the game. The project was a directive from our mathematics teacher Mr. Richards who
selected football statistics as our sba focus for this School year.
Students were asked to take statistics on twelve different players between the two teams in order
to determine the best passer of the game. The twelve players were shortlisted into the five best
and from that five the best was chosen through appropriate statistical maneuvering.
Football is an essential part of the local culture of citizens in the Woodstock community and
often, young men use this as a route of escaping their realities while showcasing their talent.

Method of data Collection
A total of four students participated in this project as a group sba initiative. Statistics were taken
on five areas of the player’s passing game to determine which player was the best passer of the
game that lasted for 50 minutes. The three areas include; long passes, short passes, Goal assist
passes, passes attempted and passes successfully completed.
A tally was used with each member of the group assigned to take the stats on six players on a
particular team that they are assigned to but this was done in a way that allows for comparison of
results to see if the record taken by one student researcher corresponds with that of the other.
A further short listing was done with what was determined as the five best passers by a panel
established. These five players were compared and the best of the five was selected after careful
and objective statistical analysis among the four researchers.

Analysis of Data
7
The data presented above shows that of the five shortlisted players, D. Green recorded the
highest score in all five areas of assessment. This indicates that player D. Green had a very huge
impact on the effective passing of his team.
D. Green recorded the highest percentage of successful passes completed (92%) which is five
percentage points above his runner up, R. Campbell who recorded 87.1% successful passes
which is very efficient by any standard. The lowest pass completion rate was registered by player
K. Whyte (80%) which is still satisfactory performance level.
The only player to have registered less than one pass per minute was K. Whyte with a statistic of
0.80 pass per minute. Contrastingly, D. Green was very involved in the passing display of his
team as he completes 1.84 passes per minute which is almost one pass every thirty seconds. A
total of 6.1 passes were successfully completed every minute among the top 5 players. It is
important to note that of the 12 players in the short list, player D. Green has completed one in
every four passes completed successfully among the top five passers during the game.

The community six-a-side football match organized did not only provide a medium for players to
showcase their talents, it also created an opportunity for students to utilize their knowledge of
mathematics and apply it in the real world context. The Student researchers applied statistical
knowledge to derive the best passer having considered players performance across five
categories of assessment. It was found that one player, D. Green, recorded the highest statistical
output in every area of assessment.
It was also found that R. Campbell was ranked 2nd overall after placing 2nd in three of the five
areas. This shows that R. Campbell displayed a very balanced performance and could be relied
on by his team mates to pass the ball effectively.
It can be concluded that the worst passer of the shortlisted five, is K. Whyte while the best passer
is D. Green. The mathematical concept behind the project was effectively used to not only used
to determined the best passer of the match, it was also use to greatly enhanced the mathematical
knowledge and application of statistics among the students involved in the research.
