The Carbon Cycle

● All living things contain carbon.
● Carbon dioxide contains carbon.
● Carbon dioxide makes up only 0.04% of the gases in the atmosphere. It is from this that all
plants get their carbon they need in order to grow.
● An example is a tall oak tree. It has a large portion of matter in the tree which is composed of
carbon and it all came from the atmosphere.
● The world’s forests are biotic reservoirs of carbon.
● Oceans are abiotic carbon reservoirs.
● Carbon dioxide dissolves in water.
● Marine organisms use the carbon from the dissolved carbon dioxide to build their tissues.
● Many natural processes move between these various carbon reservoirs which are photosynthesis
and respiration.

Energy Flows Through Ecosystems

● The Earth’s ecosystems main source of energy is the Sun.
● The sunlight that reaches Earth is absorbed by the substance that causes plant leaves to be green is
called chlorophyll.
● Plants use chlorophyll to capture the energy in sunlight and convert it into chemical energy.

Photosynthesis
● Plants absorb the chemical carbon dioxide gas and combine it chemically with water to produce a
third chemical called glucose.
● Glucose is a form of sugar which are carbohydrates.
● Carbohydrates contain energy.

Chemical Equation:

6 CO2 + 6 H2O + light --> C6H12O6 + 6 O2

Word Equation:

carbon dioxide + water + light energy --> glucose (sugar) + oxygen

Cellular Respiration
● Is the process plants use to obtain the energy from the glucose.
● Plants store the energy they capture from the Sun through photosynthesis in the form of glucose.
● Plants need a continuous supply of energy to perform functions such as growth, repair of tissues
and reproduction.
● Glucose combines chemically with oxygen from the air in order to create the products of the
equation.

Chemical Equation:

C6H12O6 + 6 O2 --> 6 H2O + 6 CO2

Word Equation:

glucose (sugar) + oxygen --> water + carbon dioxide

● Plants use the energy released by cellular respiration to run all the processes inside their cells.
● Animals also carry out cellular respiration.
● They cannot carry out photosynthesis so they must obtain glucose by eating food containing
carbohydrates.
● Breathing supplies oxygen needed for cellular respiration.
