I find that even in terms of academics and education, the Philippines is amazingly backward
and even OUTRIGHT rigid. For context, I am looking at doctoral programs both in the
Philippines (specifically, in Ateneo) and abroad (specifically, in the US).
I find that the requirements to enter a doctoral program here are amazingly rigid. For most, if
not all, doctoral programs, a master's thesis is required. In the US, I have so far encountered 0
doctoral programs that require a master's thesis for admission. And no, I am not talking about
your local community college, I am talking about BIG universities, such as The Catholic
University of America in Washington DC. These are universities that people worldwide literally
attend.
If I take a non-thesis master's degree in THE HARVARD University, I probably wouldn't be
accepted in Ateneo's philosophy department doctoral program. Talk about rigidity. Kinda
wack.
