 What is the essay all about? What Is its thesis?

 It’s all about gender roles in society because sometimes men don’t act like who they really
are, they act more manly to please society.

The thesis of Theroux's essay is that the idea of manhood in America diminishes men and
burdens them by holding aggressive, tribal ideals of how men should be. Theroux
demonstrates this ideal when he states in paragraph #2, “'Be a man!

 How did Paul Theroux develop the essay’s thesis?

 he thesis was developed by citing examples of the struggles of a male to become a man from
his childhood until his adulthood.

 What do you think is the purpose of the writer?

The purpose of an author in being a man is to look to his own perspective and able to
interact tp his own work as it's own opinion, this is also needed so people can relate to the
author's work without misunderstanding or miscommunication.

 Words for me that is so difficult to understand

Treacherous, inadequacy, coquettishness, nuisance, sexually indispensable, subverted,
connives, oppressive, fetishism, fetishist, social misfits, moral degenerates, sadists, laten
rapist, plain louts, pathetic oaf, right-wing, puritanical neurotic, philistine, solitary people,
mingled qualities, aberrant behavior, diminished, prevailing, dispirited, justified grievance.

 Base on the language and style of the writer, who do you think is the target audience of the
essay?
both men and women. Not only are men able to relate, but women as they remembered in the
fact that they face the same oppression as the one described by Theroux.

 Why does Theroux dislike being a man

He dislike being a man because he believes that there are is discrimination and set standards of
being masculine.
Being a writer, he stated that no amount of intellectual ability will prove him as a man unless he
is engaged in any physical or dangerous activity to show his alpha traits.

 base on his different definitions, what is his concept on being a man?

From his definitions, a man is someone that proves himself to be physically fit and aggressive.
And his fellow men uphold these standards and ensures that any type of strength will not be
considered as “manlier” than wrestling or hunting.
 does your concept of manhood/ manliness discuss in the warm-up activity match to Theroux
concept of manhood? What accounts for the similarities or differences? What/who has
influenced your definition of the concept?
yes, until now I’m always thinking that if I am not muscular would I be called a man? The same
with Theroux but the differences of our concept of manhood is that I always think that being a
man don’t need to be aggressive. No one ever heard any of my concept about being a man
because I’m a shy person and can only talk to the person who I can really share my thoughts and
secrets.
