Topic: PHILIPPINE HISTORY: Spaces for Conflict and Controversies

Sub Topic 1: HISTORICAL INTERPRETATION

What is your opinion on the following thought of Geoffrey Barraclough about history – ?
“the history we read, though based on facts, is strictly speaking, not factual at all, but a
series of accepted judgments.”

-My opinion of the thought of Geoffrey Barraclough about history is as he say that history
we read though based on facts, is strictly speaking, not factual at all, but a series of accepted
judgements. We cannot know precisely what happened, and why, in every single situation
in the past. So we make informed judgements, based on the documentation available, on
judgements from others of the period and of later periods. We know that the documentation
isn’t always adequate, and in some cases is downright false. It’s a constant matter of looking
at what we have, discussing it, seeing of the earlier judgements of others really match what
we can see.

TASK: Refresh yourself of the following historically established documents.

1. The code of kalantiaw.

The Code of Rajah Kalantiaw was a supposed legal code in the epic history
Maragtas that is said to have been written in 1433 by Datu Kalantiaw, a chief on
the island of Negros in the Philippines. The code is now believed by many
historians to have been a hoax and that it had actually been written in 1913 by Jose
E.

2. “Sa Aking Mga Kababata”

"Sa Aking Mga Kabatà" is a poem about the love of one's native language written
in Tagalog. It is widely attributed to the Filipino national hero José Rizal, who
supposedly wrote it in 1868 at the age of eight.

Sub Topic 2 MULTIPERSPECTIVITY

Think about the issues behind the pandemic COVID-19. How do you think people will think about it 10
years from now?

-I think that people will remember what happened behind the pandemic, it will become
a history for one of us that remain in our mind and heart. It cannot be forgotten.

TASK 1: in what ways can historians fail in their description, inferences, and
interpretations?
-First, historians sometimes misinterpret evidence, so that they are not justified in asserting that the
inferences they draw about what happened in the past are true. For example, they might attend to
evidence that suggests that a certain event occurred, but ignore evidence that shows it to have been
impossible.

Task 2: Research and thoroughly study different sources on the following historical issues.
Make a matrix on the agreements and the disagreements provided by your sources. What
is your personal perspective on the issue?

1. Where did the first catholic mass really took place?

>Ultimately, the National Historical Institute led by its chair Ambeth Ocampo
recognized the historical records of Limasawa in Southern Leyte as the venue of the
first Mass, held on March 31, 1521.

2. What really is the “Cavite Mutiny”?

> The Cavite mutiny of 1872 was an uprising of Filipino military personnel of Fort
San Felipe, the Spanish arsenal in Cavite, Philippine Islands on 20 January 1872.
Around 200 locally recruited colonial troops and laborers rose up in the belief that it

Find a way to read/research on the following issues:

1. Did Jose Rizal really retract

> Dr. Jose Rizal's retraction is a hot debate by scholars and historians
even until now as to the matter that if he did really retract before his
execution. There were accounts proving that Dr. Rizal did retract and
accounts that he did not retract at all. I think that Dr. Rizal, being a
staunch critic of the Spanish colonial government and of the wrong
doings of the Catholic Church, did not retract at all. This is because
the evidences that prove he did not retract is strong. Starting with the
authenticity of the retraction document, Dr. Rizal allegedly signed it
and the contents of the document was published in the newspapers.
Upon knowing of what Dr. Rizal did, his family
requested to see the original document so that they can verify whether
it was his handwriting or not and yet the Jesuit priests said that they
lost the document. In 1935, 39 years after Dr. Rizal's execution, the
Catholic Church found in their archives
what they claim to be the "original" document of Dr. Rizal's retraction,
Dr. Ricardo Pascual sought permission from the archbishop to examine
the document, he identified inconsistencies in the handwriting and the
format of the document that it was not of Dr. Rizal's own way of writing
and he concluded that the document is but a forgery. In the case of the
authenticity of the document alone, it is already doubtable whether it
was really legitimate or more if it really existed. Another
evidence that proves that Dr. Rizal did not retract is that when
allegedly signed the document, one of his terms was to be wed with
Josephine Bracken which the Catholic Church says that they were wed
a day before Rizal was executed, however, there were no evidences of
public records or a marriage certificate of Dr. Rizal and
Bracken to prove that he was wed and did retract.

2. Where did the Cry of Rebellion really happened?

> The Cry of Rebellion in the Philippines happened in August 1896, northeast of
Manila. Balintawak” and the “Cry of Pugad Lawin”. short katipunan and referred
them as katipuneros. They were formed as an organization on 1892.
