Read each of the following passages. Tell whether its purpose is TO INFORM, TO

47.If you have ever heard a dolphin make noise, the sounds you hear can be described
as whistles and clicks. Scientists think that dolphins even have a unique "signature
whistle" that can be used to identify specific members of their pod. Dolphins can also
communicate and navigate under the water using echolocation. Echolocation is a process
by which dolphins emit sound waves that bounce off other objects under the water.

48."MR. PRESIDENT: No man thinks more highly than I do of the patriotism, as well as
abilities of the very worthy gentlemen who have just addressed the House. But different
men often see the same subject in different lights; and, therefore, I hope it will not be
thought disrespectful to those gentlemen if, entertaining as I do, opinions of a character
very opposite to theirs, I shall speak forth my sentiments freely, and without reserve. This
is no time for ceremony. The question before the House is one of awful moment to this
country. For my own part, I consider it as nothing less than a question of freedom or
slavery; and in proportion to the magnitude of the subject ought to be the freedom of the
debate."

49.Gaining self-confidence is probably one of the most important advantages a person

can gain from plastic surgery. Despite common opinion, a wish to surgically correct one's
appearance may not necessarily be dictated by dysmorphophobia (a psychological
condition when a person is obsessed with imaginary or real defects in their appearance)
but can be a rational and conscious decision. Some people have physical features that
have a recognizable impact on their daily lives, such as cleft lip, skull deformations,
excessive pigmentation, and so on; other people tend to perceive such features as
unpleasant, and this fact can negatively affect communication and social interactions,
also causing low self-esteem and depression in a person, who is, by other criteria, the
same as other people, or even better. In such cases, plastic surgery not only helps to
remove undesired disturbances, but also boosts self-confidence and self- esteem,
granting a person the ability to live a normal life.

50. A woman wished for a baby, even a tiny one. A fairy granted her wish and gave her
a seed to plant. When it bloomed, a tiny baby was inside. A toad fell in love with the baby
and kidnapped her. A swallow rescued the baby and took her away to warmer lands.
There, Thumbelina found another tiny person just like her. He asked her to marry him,
and she became queen of the flowers.
