VI. Concept notes with formative activities
Angle Measure
In the illustration, the initial side of
An angle is formed by rotating a ray about its endpoint
∠𝐴𝑂𝐵 is OA, while the terminal
side is OB.
An angle is said to be POSITIVE if
the terminal side rotates in
COUNTERCLOCKWISE direction,
and the angle is NEGATIVE if it
rotates in CLOCKWISE direction.

Angles in Standard Position

An angle is in standard position if its vertex is at the point of origin(0,0) of a
Cartesian coordinate plane, and its initial side is along the positive side of the x-axis.

The angles α, β, and 𝜃 are angles in standard

position.
Angles α and 𝜃 are positive, while β is negative.

There are two units of angle measure that are commonly used:
1. Degree measure
1
 A central angle of a circle measures one degree, written 1 0, if it intercepts 360
of the circumference.
1
 One minute, written 1’, is of 10.
60
1
 One second, written 1’’, is of 1’.
60

For example, in degrees, minutes, and seconds

50
300 15’ 50’’ = 300 + (15 + 60 )’

= 300+15.83’
15.83 0
= (30+ )
60
= 30.260

2
and

80.970 = 800+(.97x60)’
= 800 58.2’
= 800 58’+(.2x60)’’
= 800 58’ 12’’
2. Radian measure
A unit circle has radius 1 unit and center at the origin.
A central angle of the unit circle that intercepts an arc of the circle with length 1 unit
is said to have a measure of one radian, written 1 rad.

Thus, the length of the intercepted arc(in radian) is

equal to the central angle(in radian)

Since a unit circle has a circumference 2𝜋, a central angle measures 3600 which
equivalent to 2𝜋 radians. The Following conversions are obtained.
Converting degree to radian, and vice versa

𝜋
1. To convert a degree measure to radian, multiply it by 1800
1800
2. To convert a radian measure to degree, multiply it by 𝜋

Examples:
1. Express the following in radians.
a. 300
b. 1350
Solution:
𝜋 𝜋
a. 300( ) = rad
1800 6
𝜋 3𝜋
b. 1350( 0) = rad
180 4

3
2. Express the following in degrees.
2𝜋
a.
5
2𝜋
b.
3

Solution:
2𝜋 1800
a. ( ) = 720
5 𝜋
2𝜋 1800
b. ( ) = 1200
3 𝜋
