Pros and Cons of Leaving School

Youth is a time that we live through but once in our life time. We do not fully appreciate it
until we discover the harsh realities of life. Many of us, while in school, continually yearn for
the day when we would venture into ‘the outside world’. We emerge, full of hope, optimism
and ambition towards what we think would be a happier and brighter future.

Fresh from school, we are faced with the problem of looking for an employment. Often it is
difficult and sometimes impossible to find the right type of work to suit our requirements. Not
every school-leaver is guaranteed of securing a job immediately. However, most school
leavers are aware of the advantage and importance of entering the job market as soon as
possible whether they are satisfied with the job or not. The greater the work experience the
better the prospects of getting a job.

We can no longer rely on our needs and instead, we are forced to assume full responsibility
for our actions and mistakes. Mistakes may sometimes cannot be rectified irreversible but
we learn from them. There is no time for us to be carefree as before.

The world cannot be looked through ‘rose-tinted’ glasses anymore. Our once extremely
active life is curtailed as our sporting and social activities, such as playing games with the
boys and going for dancing, are kept to the minimum. Many prefer to spend, whatever little
leisure time they have, idling with feet up in front of the television. Today this seems to be
the best method of relaxation for many of us.

Once out of school, we tend to lose touch with school friends not because we are indifferent
but because there is a lack of common interest. Instead, we have to concentrate on settling
into our new life and environment, making new friends. There are no school holidays except
public holidays.

Despite these disadvantages of leaving school, there are numerous advantages.

Independence becomes a reality after all those years of wishing and yearning. One does not
have to depend on parents or someone else. We can assume control over our lives and
make decisions. There are fever restrictions thrust upon us too.

Once working, we can earn our own money and we are not dependent on our parents for
pocket allowances. We become self-supporting.

Homework and slogging over our studies is a thing of the past and we are free from
examination pressures. After leaving school, we continually acquire the essential
experiences to aid us in the development of our character. Wisdom and maturity also come
through experience. The learning process does not stop at leaving school but continues
throughout our lives in order to give us a wider perspective of the world. We learn to exercise
greater self-control and act when dealing with people. Diplomacy becomes a must. We learn
from our experiences as well as the experiences of others so as to improve ourselves.

Learning school provides us with an opportunity to put into practice what has been learnt as
‘self-discipline’.

When one leaves school, one has to make a choice as to what we want to do with our lives;
the type of life we wish to lead. Every choice is controversial and has both its advantages
and disadvantages. But whatever the choice may be, one must consider the opportunity cost
so as not to have any regrets, if any.
