Solid waste management is a term that is used to refer to the process of collecting and
treating solid wastes. It also offers solutions for recycling items that do not belong to
garbage or trash. As long as people have been living in settlements and residential areas,
garbage or solid waste has been an issue. Waste management is all about how solid waste
can be changed and used as a valuable resource.
Solid waste management should be embraced by each and every household, including the
business owners across the world. The industrialization has brought a lot of good things and
bad things as well. One of the adverse effects of industrialization is the creation of solid
waste.
According to Britannica; “Solid-waste management, the collecting, treating, and disposing of
solid material that is discarded because it has served its purpose or is no longer useful.
Improper disposal of municipal solid waste can create unsanitary conditions, and these
conditions in turn can lead to pollution of the environment and to outbreaks of vector-
borne disease—that is, diseases spread by rodents and insects.”
The reasons which we need to manage the solid waste in our neighborhood are likely due to
Disposing solid waste is not really a fairly easy job. There are a lot of things that should be
taken into consideration like public health, transportation, proper storage, proper
collection, etc. Failure to abide by rules and protocols might lead to accidents or risk the
health of people in the region.
According to many studies , Solid waste management is extremely important in your
community mainly because it will prevent your household from experiencing the hazardous
outcomes of solid waste material. By getting rid of most of these waste matter properly, you
can actually protect your loved ones along with the environment. This means that your
young ones along with your grandchildren are able to experience the good thing about
nature. Possessing a community that understands this importance can unite as one in
preserving the environment inside your city. Since this is not simply for you personally, but
also for the next generation as well.
If the management of the solid waste is poor then this may lead to Emission of Toxic Gases,
Soil and Groundwater Pollution, Litter Surroundings, Impact on Human Health majorly.
And in a particular study about Mysore city, Karnataka state is likely to be studied in an
article by 402 tonnes of waste is generated per day, which is managed by sending it to five
different places which are as follows: a. 200 tonnes of waste per day is sent centralised
composted.
plant by mechanical methods. Here, the waste is decomposed aerobically by windrows
compost.

1. An article “Awareness, attitude and practice of people and school students towards
Household waste management” by vivek Raghavan ,CD licy and co ,and their study
conducted among school children in kerala, to know the baseline information about
waste management practices, which explains the necessity of giving mass awareness
to the impact of waste disposal practices. As there is no permanent solution for
environmental problems ,only we can reduce and waste generation by proper
awareness and correct practices. As explains us about 3 basic components namely,
collection, transportation and disposal. It is reported that estimate that 1, 60000 MT
(Metric Tonne) of municipal solid waste is generated daily in India. A questionnaire
was given to 300 students selected rando-mly from a group of one thousand. The
study was carried out at a high school and higher secondary school for girls in
Thrissur, Kerala.; We found that there are serious drawbacks in the practice-ng of
proper waste management among higher secondary school students as compared
with high school students. This may be due to insufficient motivation from
parents and teachers at this stage of growth period when they are preoccupied with
preparation of qualifying examinations for future studies, on the basis of their
residential neighbourhood which depended the mentality of the students and the
localities and the practices which their family made for the waste management. And
finally we can improve by conducting an Awareness program of waste management
in schools and public places in every level of the society.
2. According to article : MCC plans solid waste management in a Year conducted by the
newspaper Star of Mysore done by Shyam Sundar Vattam , Raising a major
challenge of management of municipal waste , they usually say the city Mysore as
the “Pensioners Paradise” or big village and famed as the ‘cleanest city’ of the
country , Mysuru is one among a few cities which is categorised as fast growing Tier-
II city. With more and more people coming here to settle or on work, waste is
naturally generated. They conclude that disposal of waste has been the biggest
challenge for all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) including the fast growing Mysuru city.
With generation of around 500 tonnes of waste daily there is no problem in regard
to collection of waste from door-to-door in almost all Wards. But the segregation of
waste has to improve. Which dire to reduce the plastic usage inspite of banning the
non biodegradable and MCC has specialized treating wet waste by the technique of
crushing and also segregated and stored in different bins and MCC is in touch with
Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET), Mysuru to share
knowledge regarding setting up of Biogas Plants with latest technology. And MCC
have Approached ITC to help in setting up of biogas plants which sustains to be
corporate social responsibility, as collected in the article of star of Mysuru.
