INNOVATION OF BLIND SMART STICK AS NAVIGATING TOOL

INTRODUCTION

According to the famous philosopher and scientist, Aristotle, our knowledge about the outside
world depends on five sense organs and sight is one of those five organs. And visually-impaired
are those unfortunate people who are completely or partially suffering with eye sight issues.
According to the survey of World Health Organization (WHO) and International Agency for
Prevention of Blindness, approximately 285 million people around the world are visually impaired
among which 39 million are completely blind.

Vision challenge or impairment is when a person’s degree of seeing is very low and the affected
person requires assistance in order to carry out daily routine. Significantly, for one to qualify as
visually impaired there must be prove that a person cannot undertake duties by himself without
necessary assistance. Visually impaired persons have difficulty to interact and feel their
environment. They have little contact with surrounding. Physical movement is a challenge for
visually impaired persons, because it can become tricky to distinguish where he is, and how to get
where he wants to go from one place to another. To navigate unknown places, he will bring a
sighted family member or his friend for support. In other words, they heavily rely on their families
for mobility. Their mobility opposes them from interacting with people and social activities.
Through the advancement of technology, the development of Blind Smart Stick will help blind
people to determine objects in their path to avoid harm and injury using microcontroller and
sensors. Creating an intelligent and smart stick will assist and alert the visually impaired persons
from obstacles and give information about their surroundings.

In the past, different designs of Blind Smart Stick have been developed but some of these are
not responsive and not reliable to detect obstacles and warn visually impaired persons at dangers.
There are some systems which has some deficiencies.
A stick for distance measurement using infrared sensors, have introduced by S. Innet and N.
Ritnoom (2017) which is a complex and time-wasting process. The stick has different vibration
modes for different range which is difficult for a blind to differentiate, it needs time for training.
The stick informs the person clearly at dangerous stage which conveys less information and safety.
The design about Smart Stick for the visually impaired people will use ultrasonic sensor with
installed vibration motor and buzzer alarm which will detect the obstacle and hurdle in the path
and sends warning signal to the user

OBJECTIVES

The goal of this research study is to develop a redesigned Blind Smart Stick and analyze its some
concepts. The following objectives are set to use as guide in data collection and analysis.
A. Test the efficiency of Blind Smart Stick to the following objects:

From the materials collected the appropriate components, sensor and microcontroller will be
selected to meet the right style of the system.

Complete Wiring of Sensor with ARDUINO UNO

Setting up all the materials selected that appropriate for Blind Smart Stick like wires,
Ultrasonic Sensor, Vibration Motor and ARDUINO UNO.
Testing of Sensor and Vibration Motor

Checking the Ultrasonic Sensor and Vibration Motor through operating and test its function
individually.

Integrate the Sensor and Vibration Motor with ARDUINO UNO

Connect all the collected materials to the exact position in the ARDUINO UNO.

Program the ARDUINO UNO

The integrated Sensor, Vibration Motor and Wire in ARDUINO UNO will be program to
complete system.

Test the Complete System

The Smart Blind Stick will be used as navigating tool. It will undergo to a test and it will be
observed if it can be useful.

Analysis

The effectiveness and efficiency of the Blind Smart Stick will be analyzed.
