1. Explain the science of aqidah and the purpose of learning aqidah. Bring an example of a discourse
prevalent in the science of aqidah and the way it helps a Muslim to better understand his faith.
2. The principles of iman are related to the metaphysics of Islam. Discuss. Will someone be able to
perform his duties and right as a Muslim, if he has doubt on the metaphysics?
3. There have been differences of views over the attributes of God between the Hanabilites, the
Mu’tazilites and the Asharites. In your opinion, how do these differences help to enhance our
understanding of Tawhid/the Unity of Allah?
4. Materialism, relativism and skepticism are challenges to aqidah. How do these philosophies affect a
Muslim’s worldview?
5. Explain the differences between the secular worldview and Tawhidic worldview in the way they
understand God and His relationship with the world.
6. How does al-ghuluww contradictory to Islam in terms of its interpretation of Islam as a religion of
fitrah.
1. Think about how do the Qur’an and Hadith/Sunnah play an epistemological role in theology,
laws/shari’ah, morality and ethics, politics and economics of the Muslims. How do Muslims define the
Qur’an, hadith, sunnah?
2. How do Muslims know that the Qur’an they recite today is the Qur’an that the Prophet and his
Companions recited? How reliable was the method of the compilation of the Qur’an? How does it help
to eliminate any doubt of mistake and forgery of the Qur’anic text?
3. Think about the importance of the knowledge of Mekkan and Madani revelations to a person who
seeks the guidance from the Qur’an. What does the ignorance about these verses do to the people who
study/interpret the Qur’an?
4. How does the knowledge about the cause of revelation (sabab al-Nuzul) help us to understand the
Qur’an properly? Please give some examples.
5. What are the benefits of the knowledge of abrogation in the Qur’an? What are the aspects of ‘Ijaz in
of the Qur’an? How do we Muslims in the 21st century benefit this aspect of the Qur’an in our daily life?
6. Can anyone interpret the Qur’an? Explain your answer. How do you appreciate the plethora of Tafsir
works that have been written since its compilation period up till today?
1. What are the most important hadith taxonomies and the significant to understand these terms.
2. How to identify the authenticity of hadith based on its text/ matan and chain/ sanad?
3. What are the sources of the compilation of hadith in Islam? (Kutub Sittah+Musannaf+Masanid).
4. What are the argumentation of anti hadith movement and how to refute them?
1. Shariah or Islamic Law is designed by Allah for mankind. Discuss in detail what are the characteristics
of Islamic Law.
2. Explain what is Maqasid al-Shariah and discuss in detail the categories of Maqasid al-Shariah based on
their importance with examples.
3. The school of al-Hadith and the school of opinion are two different methodologies in Islamic Law.
Please answer the following questions:
a-Describe the characteristics of both schools
b-Discuss 2 reasons which led to the differences in their approaches
c-Mention 2 scholars from each school
4. When the ‘Abbasid dynasty was in power, it was considered as the “Golden Age” for Fiqh. Mention
the precise date for the ‘’Abbasid’ dynasty and highlight FOUR reasons which contributed to the “Golden
Age” during that period.
5. One of the most important duties of Mujtahid is to deduce the rulings of Fiqh from its sources and not
to practice taqlid. Please answer the following questions:
a-Define what is taqlid
b-Mention 4 reasons which have led to the trend of taqlid.
6. Hardship begets facility (al-mashaqqah tajlub al-taysir) is one of the five major Islamic Legal Maxims.
Discuss this legal maxim in detail. Include in your discussion its meaning, evidence from the Qur’an on its
validity, two branches (sub-maxims) and one of its applications under Islamic Law.
