I am writing to express my profound desire to begin my nursing career at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, applying to
the Arizona Nurse Residency Program. I will be graduating from the University of Arizona with my Bachelor of
Science in Nursing and a minor in Family Studies & Human Development in May 2022. My deep interest in
this position is rooted in the personal relationship I’ve formed with the organization over the last three years
while being able to experience how the Mayo Clinic care model has greatly benefitted my father and our family.
As a frequent visitor of the hospital, I’ve had the privilege of seeing Mayo’s values come to life; to place the
needs of the patient above all else. I’ve witnessed how the collaborative, team-based approach to health instills
motivation in its providers to treat patients as if it were their own family members through individualized,
empathetic care. These qualities accompanied by prioritization of research, education and integrative care align
perfectly with the vision I have for my own career in nursing. I am confident that my unique combination of
adaptability, drive for innovation, and extensive experience in patient care make me a qualified candidate and
asset to the newest generation of nurses at Mayo Clinic.
The rigorous curriculum of a 16-month nursing program along with working actively in an acute care setting
throughout a pandemic have prepared me for the realities and importance of time management, attention to
detail and adaptability in healthcare. In clinical rotations and simulations alike, I’ve practiced adapting and
responding to urgent information such as critical lab values, cardiac rhythms, and sudden status changes. In
simulations while working with a team of other nursing students, I’ve been able to use my ability to lead
conversations and make high-impact decisions that prioritize the clinical wellbeing of the patient, especially in
complex situations. As a patient care technician within the float pool at Tucson Medical Center, I very quickly
learned to work without the comforts of stability. For over a year, I regularly would arrive not knowing which
unit or what team members I would be working with. Utilization of excellent communication skills and critical
thinking in high stress environments was essential in exemplifying quality care then and has carried over as my
personal corner stone as a nursing student and soon-to-be registered nurse.
In addition to my professional and academic experiences, I personally have borne witness to the harsh realities
of degenerative diseases and disorders along with the pivotal impact a committed, empathetic nurse can have. I
have honed a valuable set of skills and passions throughout working and earning my bachelor’s degree that have
provided me the interpersonal skills, knowledge, and approach to professional growth that will allow me to
contribute to the innovation and progress of healthcare at Mayo Clinic. I look forward to hearing from you
about the opportunity to participate in the Arizona Nurse Residency Program. Thank you for your time and I
sincerely appreciate your consideration of my application.
Sincerely,
Payton Rene Sams
