Looking Back to Your Lesson

You have learned how to multiply whole numbers. Now, you will learn
how to multiply decimal with factors up to 2 decimal places. First, let us recall again
how to multiply whole numbers.

1.) 25 x 30=n 2.) 72 x 6=n 3.) 55 x 23=n 4). 64 x 42=n 5.) 84 x 23=n

BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Multiplying decimals is the same as multiplying whole numbers
except for the placement of the decimal point in the answer.

When you multiply decimals, the decimal point is placed in the product
so that the number of decimal places in the product is the sum of the decimal places
in the factor.

Study this example: What is the product of 5.6 x 2.73 ?

Follow these STEPS:

1. Write the factors in 2. Multiply like you do 3. Put the decimal point in the
vertical form. with whole numbers. product.
Regroup if necessary.
3 1 3 1

2.73 4 1 4 1

X 5.6 2.73 2.73 2 decimal places

X 5.6 X 5.6 1 decimal place
1638 partial 1488
+1365 products + 744
15288 final product 15.228 3 decimal places

• The number of decimal

places in the product is
equal to that of the
decimal places in the
factors.

Analyze this problem: (Communication and Character)

While we are still in the General Community Quarantine period, Joseph

was treated by his dad with his favorite chocolate bar for being helpful to those in
need.

A piece of chocolate bar is 0.26 dm. long. Joseph shared it with his sister.
If Joseph got 0.20 of the chocolate bars, how long was for her sister?

Answer the following questions before proceeding to the steps.

• How do you find Joseph and his sister in the story?
• How will you show your care for others especially in times of pandemic?
Find: 0.20 x 0.26

Activity 2
Directions: Analyze, then give the correct solution for the problem below.

Joseph wanted to add sugar to his food packs to be donated to

their barangay. He packs sugar in 0.25 kg bags. He can pack 2.25 kg. of
sugar in one minute.

How many kilograms of sugar can he pack in 5.15 minutes?

Activity 3
Directions: Answer the questions below. Refer to the story problem inside the box.

In order to keep ourselves heathy during the

quarantine period, our body needs exercise.

Joseph burns 7.25 calories of food energy per

minute while jogging.

How many calories does he burn if he jogs for 6.75

minutes?

1. Why do you think Joseph jogs every morning?

2. What is the problem asking us to find?
3. How can we solve for the answer?
4. How many decimal places are there in the multiplicand? in the multiplier?
5. How many decimal places should there be in the product?
6. What did you do to find the number of decimal places in the product?
7. Show your solution.
8. What is the answer?

Mathematics 5

REMEMBER

To multiply decimals with factors up to 2 decimal places:

1. Write the factors in vertical form.

2. Multiply as you multiply whole numbers.

• multiply each digit of the multiplicand with the multiplier.

• start from the hundredths, to the tenths and whole numbers.
• regroup if needed.
• Add the partial products.
3. Put the decimal point in the product.

• the number of decimal places in the product is equal to that of the

decimal places in the factors.
• if there are not enough digits in the product obtained, add the
necessary number of zeros to the left of the product before placing the
decimal point.

CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

• Parents/Guardians can make suggestions and help with

directions. But, it’s a kid’s job to do the learning.

Objective: Multiplies decimals with factors up to 2 decimal places.

(M5NS- IId-111.2)
Learning Content: This lesson involves multiplying decimals with factors up
to 2 decimal places. Pupils will learn that, when multiplying
decimals, the calculation works in the same way as with whole numbers. We
multiply the numbers as if there was no decimal point at all. At the end of the
calculation, we make sure that we have the decimal point in the
correct place in our answer.

Brigada Eskwela, also dubbed as DepEd's National Maintenance Week,

endeavors to bring together all educational stakeholders who are willing to contribute
their time, resources, and commitment among others, in ensuring that the school's
facilities are safe and ready for the students as they savor their first day in school.
During the Brigada Eskwela, the parents of Grade 5 students were given 0.75
gallon of paint to paint the gate of the school. They used 0.5 of it for the first coating.
What part of the paint did they use?
