the title, against Trevor Berbick for the WBC heavyweight version . Two rounds later, at the age of 20,
Tyson became the youngest heavyweight world champion in the world.
In 1987 , Tyson defended his title against James 'Bonecrusher' Smith on March 7 in Las
Vegas , Nevada . He won points and added Smith's WBA title to his collection. 'Tyson mania' exploded in
the mass media. He defeated Pinklon Thomas in May by knockout in the sixth round. On August 1 he
won the IBF title from Tony Tucker by winning points to become the "true heavyweight world boxing
champion" .After that he only boxed once again in 1987 against 1984 Olympic champion Tyrell
Biggs in October , winning by knockout in the seventh round
Tyson fought three times in 1988 , against veteran boxer and former heavyweight champion Larry
Holmes on January 22 in a fourth-round TKO victory; against Tony Tubbs in Tokyo in March , second
round KO; and against Michael Spinks who was predicted to be a tough opponent for Tyson, on June 27 ,
he was knocked out in just 90 seconds in the first round .
Controversy
His marriage to Robin Givens led to divorce, in a household that was less than harmonious and peppered
with cases of domestic violence. Later Tyson remarried to Dr. Monica Turner gave him several children,
but even this family fell apart. During 1989 , Tyson only fought twice: against Frank Bruno where he won
in the fifth round and against Carl Williams in July by knockout in the first round.
In 1990 Tyson lost orientation, his personal life was in turmoil, and he was not training well. In a fight
on 11 February with unknown boxer James 'Buster' Douglas he lost by knockout in the 10th round,
although in the 8th his manager protested the referee for 'counting too slow'. As a result, Tyson lost his
championship belt which was won by Douglas. His next two fights in 1990 gave him confidence when he
won by knockout in the first round.
Tyson tried in Indiana on charges of rape on the participant game Miss Black America 1991
named Desiree Washington on 27 January 1992 . Tyson was found guilty of rape on February 10 and
jailed for 3 years. As a result, Tyson did not fight again until 1995 .
In his opening fight after his release from prison, he fought Peter McNeeley in August and defeated
Buster Mathis Jr. in three rounds in December 1995 . In March 1996 Tyson won a championship belt
when he snatched the WBC title from striding Frank Bruno in three rounds. In September 1996 Tyson
won back the WBA title in 93 seconds from Bruce Seldon , after paying Lennox Lewis $4 million US
dollars.to 'get out of the way'. Tyson was criticized by many for fighting very inferior boxers. For
example, it is said that the McNeeleys' "opponents" generally lose 3/4 of their fights. Mathis is a lousy
opponent, a boxer whose punches aren't as hard and his only notoriety is that his father, too, was a
boxer who fought Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali . Seldon was ridiculed for his first-round loss against
Tyson because he was hit by a very light punch. Many accused him of just being scared so he just gave
up.
End of his career
In August 2003, after years of financial struggle, Tyson finally went bankrupt . His bank account has been
said to amount to only about 5,000 dollars. Amid all his economic troubles, he was named Ring
Magazine at number 16 among the all-time greatest hitters in boxing history in 2003.
On 31 July 2004 Tyson faced the unseen Englishman Danny Williams in another 'come-back' match held
in Louisville, Kentucky. Tyson dominated the opening 2 rounds. The 3rd round was more of a draw, with
Williams getting a few clean strokes as well as a few illegitimates, for which he was penalized. In the 4th
round Tyson was surprisingly defeated. He was trying to fight on one leg because his leg bones were
torn. Williams hit more than 20 unanswered punches although Tyson didn't appear to be hurt by those
punches. It seemed like he just staggered and when he was knocked down, he didn't try to get back
up. This is Tyson's 5th career loss. Tyson tore the bandage in his knee during the first round. He
underwent surgery 4 days after the match. His manager Shelly Finkel stated that Tyson was unable to
throw a meaningful right hand after a knee injury.
His career really ended after on June 11, 2005 surrendered by TKO round 7 to Kevin McBride . Tyson
decided to resign in round 7, after experiencing frustration because of the difficulty of controlling Mc
Bride who was considered a light opponent. Previously, at the height of his frustration, Tyson
deliberately headed his opponent, and resulted in his score being cut by 2 points by referee Joe
Cortez . After this match, Tyson announced his retirement from boxing.
Had appeared several times in a four-round exhibition match in 2006 , and even promoted Muhammad
Arsyad to compete in an exhibition match at the Chris John match , but until now Tyson's performance is
rarely heard.
