Introduction
Good day, Ladies and Gentlemen, and welcome to our today's presentation. But, before we
begin our discussion, allow me to introduce myself and my members. My name is MEDARDO
DIAZ and I am the group 1 leader. {Names of members}. We also have a game called guess the
shuffled words that we will play. All you have to do now is rearrange the letters to form a
meaningful words.
We've finished playing and will now go on to our discussion. The topic of our presentation is all
about basketball.
So Mr. Dalangin the floor is now yours. You may now enlighten us on what basketball is.
(Dalangin)
What is basketball?
- Basketball can be played as two teams having five players each, whose goal is to shoot a ball
through the netted hoop above each end of the court to gain a score.
There are positions when playing basketball. Each position on a team has its own skill set,
physical attributes and competitive nuances. By gaining this understanding, you can get better
at predicting where players are going to be and what they're going to do.
Center
-The center is the tallest player on each team, playing near the basket. On offense, the center
tries to score on close shots and rebound. But on defense, the center tries to block opponents’
shots and rebound their misses.
Centers also need to be proficient on offense, playing with their back to the basket. Footwork is
key to scoring inside the paint. Centers must also be able to work with teammates by setting up
screens. On defense, the center is usually the best shot blocker and a solid rebounder to
eliminate opponent’s second-chance baskets.
Power Forward
- The power forward does many of the things a center does, playing near the basket while
rebounding and defending taller players. But power forwards also take longer shots than
centers.
Small Forward
- They are responsible for scoring points and defending, and often are secondary or tertiary
rebounders behind the power forward and center
Point Guard
- The point guard runs the offense and usually is the team's best dribbler and passer.
Shooting Guard
- The Shooting Guard is usually the team’s best shooter. The shooting guard can make shots
from long distance and also is a good dribble
(Polo)
HYBRID POSITIONS
-Basketball is a sport that has evolved throughout the years. While there are five traditional
positions, sometimes a player doesn’t fit into those roles. Instead, they play in a hybrid or non-
traditional position. These players often combine the skills needed to play two separate
positions. These hybrid positions typically start at the high school level.
Example: Point Forward, Combo Guard, Swingman, Stretch 4
Point Forward
- This is usually a small forward that takes on the role of a point guard. They will need the skills
required to play small forward with the added responsibility of initiating the offense.
Combo Guard
- This player can fill either the point guard or shooting guard positions. They will need strong
ball-handling and shooting skills.
Swingman
- This is a player who can play small forward or shooting guard. They tend to be taller than a
typical shooting guard, so they are not overmatched at either position.
Stretch 4
- This is a power forward with the ability to make shots from 3-point range. The threat of hitting a
shot from beyond the arc “stretches” the defense and can open driving lanes for guards.
Each position on a team has its own skillset, physical attributes and competitive nuances.
By gaining this understanding, you can get better at predicting where players are going to be
and what they’re going to do when they get there.

Let me tell you about the history of basketball.

Brief history of genders that played basketball
- Women's basketball has come a long way from its beginning in 1892. Women began playing
basketball less than a year after the game was invented. The first intercollegiate women's
basketball game was played between teams from Stanford University and the University of
California, Berkeley, on April 4,1896. As time goes by its normal to play basketball in all gender.
And that is the end of the history of basketball, let’s proceed to the next one.
(Echine)
Where can you play basketball?
- The game is played on a rectangular floor called the court, and there is a hoop at each end.
The court is divided into two main sections by the mid-court line.
Court Size
- The size of the basketball court depends on the playing level. The size of the court for NBA
and College games is 94 feet long and 50 feet wide. It is smaller for High School and Junior
High competitions.
Line Markings
- All line markings on the floor are 2 inches wide and can vary in color.
(Castro)
What exercises can be done?
- Lateral lunge
- Glute bridge
- Lateral bound
- Pull ups
- Goblet squats
- Single leg hurdle hop

How can a person benefit from playing basketball?
Benefit 1:
– Improves communication abilities.
Networking with peers may discover new ways of linguistic and nonverbal
communication. You will have the opportunity to chat with and listen to your teammates.
Before, during, and after a game or training session, you certainly have time to
exchange ideas. Positive communication skills improve your sport, personality, and work
life, whether you learn to speak more often or stay silent more often.
Benefit 2:
– Improves muscle endurance.
Basketball requires speed, strength and endurance. You need to move quickly and
change direction while performing high-intensity muscle contractions in a short period of
time. They also require muscle endurance. This is the ability of the muscle to exert its
strength repeatedly over a period of time. Playing basketball and training to improve your
upper and lower body strength can help you improve your fitness. You can also work to
improve the strength of your core and back muscles. This improves stamina, energy,
level and performance.
Benefit 3:
– Improves balance and coordination
To play basketball, you need to develop hand-eye-foot coordination and the ability to
maintain balance during action. You need to move quickly when jumping, turning, or
turning during the game. In basketball, you need to acquire motor skills such as
shooting, passing, and dribbling. It also improves rebound and defense movements.
Maintaining a strong physique makes it easy to perform all these exercises.
Benefit 4:
– Promotes team spirit
Basketball promotes community and collaboration. You may have the opportunity to
actively engage and broaden your horizons with people from different backgrounds. In
addition, you will learn to play fairly and generously, regardless of the outcome of the
performance. You and your colleagues can strive to be a good role model that helps
each other.
Benefit 5:
– Improves cardiac health
Regular physical activity helps improve heart health and overall fitness. Basketball
increases resting heart rate and improves cardiorespiratory fitness. This is associated
with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
Benefit 6:
– Full-Body Toning and Workout
When playing basketball, you receive full-body training to help build thin muscles in the
lower back, neck, deltoids, trapezius, and core. It also makes your feet stronger, and
shooting and dribbling help strengthen your arms, hands and wrists.
Benefit 7:
– Impulsive Decision-Making and Quick Thinking
Basketball is not only a fast-paced game that requires a lot of physical skills, but also a
mind game that you have to think about on your toes. This sport requires a high level of
concentration so that you can handle what is happening on the pitch accurately and
quickly and make the right decisions to steer the ball. They also have to assess the court
environment around them and make momentary decisions based on the actions of other
players on the court.
Benefit 8:
– Stress Relief
Basketball is a great stress reliever. With less stress, you have more energy and
concentration to perform other tasks. It can also make you more sociable and help
prevent depression. When stress is relieved, your immune system is strengthened, your
overall health is improved, and your body naturally becomes fierce

Additional Information
All games have rules and violations as well as basketball. The following are the rules and
violations in playing basketball:
GENERAL RULES
1. Basketball is a game in which five players from each team play at a time on the
basketball court.
2. The aim of the players to score a basket by putting the ball inside the hoop elevated
10 ft above the ground.
3. The team with the ball in possession is the team on the offence, and the opposite one
is the team on defense.
4. Once the offensive team has the ball, they have 24 seconds to shoot it towards the
basket. If It fails to do so, the team on defense is awarded the ball.
5. There can be a total of 12 players on the team roster, but only five can play at a time.
6. The game of basketball consists of four quarters of 10 minutes each, and if scores are
tied at the end of it, there is a five minutes’ extension called “overtime”.
7. The scoring rules are simple. If you shoot from behind the arc, you will get three
points whereas shot from inside the arc receives two points. Also, each free throw is
worth a single point.
8. A player playing on the court can be substituted from the players on the bench by the
coach. A coach can make an unlimited number of substitutions.

Before we proceed to the next topic
And now let us proceed to the rules and violation of playing basketball
TRAVELING (WALKING)
- One of the basic concepts of basketball is that the player needs to dribble or bounce the ball
while walking or jogging. When you stop dribbling, one foot becomes a pivot foot. You cannot
move or lift the pivot foot off the floor. This is called a trip.
DOUBLE DRIBBLE
- In basketball, you can only dribble once. When you stop dribbling, you need to give the ball to
another player or shoot. Double dribbling is to start dribbling again after a break.
THREE SECONDS
- Aggressive team players cannot stay in the free throw lane, also known as the key, for more
than 3 seconds. When you release the button or the ball hits the basket, the 3-second count
resumes.
(Castro)
24 SECONDS VIOLATION
-The attacking team has 24 seconds to attempt a field goal, from the movement they take
possession to the ball. If by the end of the 24 seconds, the team hasn't taken a shot. The
referee will whistle and turn the ball over to the other team.
8 SECONDS VIOLATION
-Whenever a team inbounds the ball or recuperates the possession on their back court they
have eight seconds to cross the midcourt line into the front court, otherwise the referee would
call an eight seconds violation, then the ball is given to the other team.
OVER-AND-BACK
- Once the attacking team has brought the ball to the half-court, the ball cannot be returned to
the defender's half-court. This is called "over and back".
(Brian)
OUT OF BOUNDS
-The player is out of bounds when he touches the floor or any object on or outside the
boundary. For the location of player in the air, his position is that from when he last touched the
floor.
CARRYING (PALMING)
- Carry, sometimes called the palm, is similar to a two-way dribble. Players cannot place their
palms under the ball or carry it with one hand. It's similar to doing a double dribble with the ball.
FIVE SECONDS RULE
-The 5 seconds violation is called when a player holds the ball for 5 seconds and does not
shoot, pass, or dribble the ball while being closely guarded by an opposite player.
(Polo)
FOULS AND VIOLATION
A foul in basketball is a rule-breaking action that results in a loss of possession and possible
free throws. There are multiple categories of fouls:
Fouls that may happen during a basketball game
- Offensive fouls are committed by the team in possession of the ball.
- Defensive fouls are committed by the team not in possession of the ball.
- Technical fouls are for unsportsman like conduct or violation like calling excessive timeouts or
intentionally delaying the game.
- Shooting fouls are on a defensive player for fouling an offensive player while he was shooting.
The offensive player will receive three free throws if fouled while shooting inside the three-point
arc, or three free throws if fouled shooting outside of the three-point arc.
- Personal fouls are the most common fouls in basketball, it is when a player makes illegal
contact with another player.
(Castro)
- Flagrant fouls are unnecessary or excessive contact with another player. The player and the
player's team will receive a foul, and the opposing team is awarded the ball and two free throws.
- Intentional fouls are committed intentionally
- Loose ball fouls are called when players of both teams are competing for possession of a ball,
which during the game is called "loose" ball, because no team has sole possession over it.
- Illegal screens occur when the offensive player does not make a stationary screen. A screen
intended to prevent a defender from following an offensive player. It involves another offensive
player standing in place in hopes to have the other team's defender get blocked by them.
- Charging occurs when an offensive player in possession of the ball runs into a defensive
player who is set on the court. The ball is turned over to the offensive team.
- Blocking Foul is an illegal act that will be called on a defensive player who does not get into
position in time prior to the dribbler moving in that direction.

That’s all for the information about basketball. But before we end this discussion, let’s
have a short quiz.
