Pneumatics

Introduction

Pneumatics is a branch of
engineering that uses gases or
highly pressurized air to make
systems such as electrical
compressor powers cylinders, air
motors, pneumatic actuators, and
other pneumatic devices. It also
uses compressed air to transmit
and control energy. Pneumatic systems are widely used in various
industries. Most pneumatic systems require a continuous supply of
compressed air. This is provided by an air compressor. A
compressor draws air from the atmosphere and stores it in a high-
pressure tank called a receiver. This compressed air is supplied to
the system through a series of pipes and valves.

Aim

Pneumatic and hydraulic systems have been around for many

years. In the course of the industrial process, it occurred in
modern industry. Pneumatics is the most widely used
hydrodynamic technique. In pneumatic systems, compressed air
serves as the actuating and controlling medium. Using pneumatic
or compressed air has many advantages in terms of power
transmission and control capabilities of the system. Pneumatic
systems in early life were very simple, they used hand-held pumps
to in ate bike and bus tires, this is a very basic air compressor. The
use of pneumatics is justi ed by the fact that almost all buses have
pneumatic brakes and automatic pneumatic doors.

Types of pneumatic cylinders

Single acting cylinder:

• In single-acting pneumatic cylinders, air is supplied to one side

of the piston through a single port, extending the piston rod in
one direction for tasks such as lifting an object. The other side
releases air into the environment. Movement in the opposite
direction occurs most often with the help of
a mechanical spring that returns the piston
rod to its original or default position. Some
single-acting cylinders use gravity, weight,
mechanical movement, or externally
mounted springs to provide reverse, but
these designs are less common.

• The 3/2 direction valve has 3

connections and 2 positions and can be
pneumatically, mechanically, manually
or electrically controlled via a solenoid
valve. For example, it is used in single-
acting cylinder control, pneumatic
actuator drive, blow-o , pressure relief,
and vacuum applications.

Double acting cylinder:

• Double acting cylinders have two air

connections. When compressed air is
supplied to one port and the other
port is exhausted to atmosphere (ie
free air is exhausted), the piston
moves to one end of the cylinder.

• Also, they Are widely recognized across many industries for
being faster, stronger, and more ef cient than single acting
cylinders.

• This type of cylinder provides more force on the return stroke

than single-acting cylinders and provides the ability to effectively
lock the piston in place at both ends of the stroke.

• The 5/2-way pneumatic valve

has ve connection ports and
two states. It is a ve-way, on-off
valve that supplies liquid or air at
one end and exhausts air at the
other end of a dual-acting unit.

PPE, health and safety

• Always make sure to wear safety

glasses, safety shoes and hearing
protection.

• Review the machine’s instruction

before using it.

• Keep your hand away from moving

parts.

• Always turn o the main air supply

before changing the circuit.

• Do not blow compressed at anybody not even yourself.

Conclusion

Pneumatic systems are hugely essential in di erent professions

and in our lives as well. the pneumatic circuit and the electro-
pneumatic circuit can be simply explained by theory and logic. It
can also identify the components of a pneumatic system.
Pneumatics are very important in industry. The industry has to
perform many arduous tasks such as clamping, moving, moving,
stamping, pressing and embossing. You can also see tools that
use pneumatic systems in everyday life such as bus’ doors, and air
compressors.
