Title: Postdoctoral Associate

DLC: Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics
Location: Cambridge, MA
Full Time
Employment / Payroll Category: Academic

POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, aerospace; chemical, biological, mechanical or

environmental engineering; atmospheric science or closely related field. Applicants are
invited for a post-doctoral position to study the impact of aviation on air quality and/or
climate change and measures to mitigate those impacts. Funded by the Partnership for Air
Transport Noise and Emissions Reduction (PARTNER), an FAA Center of Excellence, the
Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics is conducting a multi-disciplinary research
effort to evaluate and mitigate the impact of aviation on the environment from a broad range
of perspectives, including air quality and climate change. The successful applicant will join a
team with a track record of informing national and international environmental policy for
aviation. Details on the research effort are available from the PARTNER website:
http://web.mit.edu/aeroastro/partner/index.html

Depending on qualifications, the successful applicant will focus on one of the following:
One goal of the work is to apply advanced atmospheric modeling systems to create
knowledge and develop analysis tools related to the air quality and/or climate impacts of
aviation. The successful applicant would be responsible in developing and maintaining
atmospheric modeling systems and guiding graduate students in their use.
A second goal of the work is to develop and improve the life cycle assessment of greenhouse
gas emissions for synthetic jet fuel production from different pathways and processes such as
Fischer-Tropsch, hydroprocessing of renewable oils, pyrolysis, fermentation, metabolic
conversion and direct liquefaction, including technologies for carbon capture and
sequestration.
Regardless of the specific focus of the work, responsibilities will include writing manuscripts
for publication in scholarly journals, conducting original high impact research into the
environmental impacts of aviation, and assisting in research group management and student
advising.

Requirements: Applicants should have earned a doctoral degree in aerospace, chemical,

biological, mechanical or environmental engineering, atmospheric science or a closely related
field. A background in atmospheric modeling is a prerequisite for the air quality / climate
change assessment. Additional experience in modeling the atmospheric impacts of aircraft or
other transportation emissions would be a plus for this work. Experience in life cycle analysis
and process design would be a plus for the alternative fuel assessment.

Successful candidates are expected to participate in the multi-disciplinary research initiative,

interact with industry and academic partners and demonstrate a commitment to excellence in
research. The opening is for one year, starting early 2012. To submit application please
