¨What is love?¨ Jaymes Young dealing with a traumatic accident with his love and
Haddaway is deciding between two lovers. In Haddaway’s video it kept showing flashbacks to
how he was in love with two different girls and trying to decide between them. In Young’s video
it showed the main character mourning over the death of a significant other and how he was
trying to recover from it. Each video represents one of the rhetorical appeals in their own ways.
Jaymes Young’s cover of “What is Love” originally sung and written by Haddaway brings out a
deep, emotional stand on the song, while the original is an upbeat version. Each song highlights
key components of different ways to get over a heartbreak, even though the songs have opposite
storylines, they reach out and cover the ways needed to get over a breakup.
In Haddaway's version his music video shows him trying to decide which girl he loves.
Haddaway is the main character in his music video as he proceeds to try to decide who he loves.
In the video it appears that the girls are in his past as each clip looks like flashbacks. Many of the
clips that he is with the women their motions are in reverse. For example the women may be
seen running backwards from him. The women are dressed up in costumes as the setting of the
music video seems to be a haunted mansion. The girls are in these costumes to “haunt him” as
the meaning of what love is beats him down. There are many flashing lights as he is with these
women which represent his flashbacks. His version of the song has the upbeat toon to it as there

is a lot of dancing going on between the characters. Haddaway is seen dancing with each girl that
he is trying to choose between. While he is dancing with the girls he is seen to be very drawn to
them, they are wearing scandalous outfits that show a lot of their bodies; which this can be used
In Jaymes Young’s version he is mourning the death of his significant other or wife. At
the beginning of the video he is seen to be with his wife in the car and then as she is driving they
get in a car accident, which kills her. Throughout the video the audience sees him struggle to live
without her. As every clip he is reliving moments that they had together. For example it shows a
flashback of him watching her walk down the aisle at their wedding. The video is showing him
trying to continue his everyday life but is struggling to do so. His version of the song is more
depressing and mellow as the representation of the video is losing a loved one. The target
audience is anyone who has ever lost a loved one in their lifetime. Without her in his life the
video is showing that he is struggling to find what love is, knowing that if it was love she died
The rhetorical appeals used in each video were pathos. Both videos bring out emotions in
the audience who have been in each position. In Haddaway’s video the pathos is how he is
struggling on deciding between two toxic relationships. As in Young’s video it uses his mourning
of the wife dying to make the audience feel for him and flood them with emotions. The music
genre for Haddaway’s video is pop because it is upbeat and Young’s version is instrumental as it
is mellow and sad. The music genre affects each song as the tone of the song is how the music
video would come across. For example, in Haddaway’s version the genre is pop and the video is
involving dancing and is more upbeat; as for Young’s version on the other hand the genre is

instrumental which results in the video being depressing as the main character is mourning the
The two music videos both bring out the meaning of “What is love” in their own ways.
While people go through heartbreak that is one of the most common asked questions because the
person wonders if what they had was love. Haddaway and Young both had videos that gave key
components to their audience to find what love is, and get over heartbreak by the relation and
connection they got from them. With each storyline being polar opposite from each other, the
song still reaches its target audience of people who are going through heartbreak in some way.
