MOVIE REVIEW
Sa’yo Lamang

I. Introduction
“Sa’yo Lamang”, what is it? And what is all about the film? These were the

random questions that thump my mind before I watch the film. StarCinema, on its 10th

anniversary presents this movie that revolves with the Alvero family.

Christopher De Leon who left his family for almost ten years went back during

his family’s house blessing. The children of Christopher De Leon: Bea Alonzo, Coco Martin,

Enchong Dee, and Miles Ocampo, were all shocked with the comeback of their father. The

story of the whole film revolves around the issues of their family.

In the ten years that Christopher De Leon (Franco), was not around, there were

many things that change. He never knew how would his family restore and patch up the

things that were wrecked and fragmented. Bea Alonzo (Dianne), who is the eldest of the

Alvero children, stood to be the breadwinner and backbone of the family since his father,

Christopher de Leon left. She sacrifices her ambitions, dreams, her youth, and her loved life

for the sake of the family. Coco Martin (Coby), the second among the Alvero children tends

to be the stigmatized as the “blacksheep” of the family. He accidentally had a child with

Shaina Magdayao, who was pregnant at that time. Enchong Dee (James), the third child of

the family seems to be the genius of the family but he was pressured by the fact that his sister

(Bea Alonzo) demands so much on him. The movie exhibits the best stars that are present the

show business industry.

Moving, emotional, melancholic are the exact words that can portray and depict

the film. Lorna Tolentino who is the “ilaw ng tahanan” serves to be the “link up” to the film.
On the last part she was diagnosed with a cervical cancer and later on die. One of the most

painful scene that can be found in the film, is when Lorna Tolentino is suffering so much

pain because of its conditions, and the children didn’t know what to do. This was the time

that all the family members come together and eventually reconcile.

II. Critique
The film “Sa’yo Lamang”, is a film that manifests the typical Filipino Family

relating to an important institutions that affects and influence it, for example the Catholic

Religion, cultural aspects like the traditional values system of Filipinos. Basically the story of

the film revolves on the issues concerning family life. The story of the whole film is moving

and melancholic.

The film showcases the most important and basic institution of our society, which

is the family. In the Philippines, the family has always been stigmatized as the source of each

Filipino’s success. In the film, there were many Filipino traditional values that were

highlighted.

Here are some of the Filipino values that are visible to the two hour movie:

(1) Family Oriented- the family tends to be the most significant and principal

element of the development, growth, and enhancement of each individual. In the film, Bea

Alonzo (Dianne Alvero) had sacrificed her dreams, her youth, and her true love for the sake

of the Alvero family. She submits herself for the dreams and ambitions of her family. This

scene also presents the common value that is present to many Filipinos which is the “utang

na loob”. (2) The value of togetherness and unity is present in the movie; this is very visible

throughout the film, the family as a group ought to value sense of togetherness and unity. It is

a determination of each family member using their unique skills, knowledge in helping and

supporting each other for a goal. (3) The value of pagpapakumbaba (forgiveness), is also
showcased in the film, guided by the principles and dogma of the Catholic faith, the actors

reconciled towards the last part of the film.

The whole film really presents the emotional and very personal relationships

among Filipinos. We can never alter and change these ways because it is already part of our

identity and culture. The idea of the whole is really good, competent, and upright.

However with its cinematography and technicalities, there are also weaknesses

and shortcomings. For example, there were too many actors and actresses in the movie but

their roles were not explicitly recognized and pinpoint. The roles of Lauren Young, Shaina

Magdayao, Miles Ocampo were too vague. The attempt of the Director of the film to

showcase the actors and actresses potentials did not flourish and succeed because of the time

frame given. Some would say that it is the second part of “Tanging Yaman”, but I could say

that the two films are incomparable.
