Founded as a two-man office in 1946,
RTKL has evolved into one of the world’s
largest multi-disciplinary design firms,
with an international portfolio of mixed-
use, office, retail, entertainment, hotel and
resort, health sciences, government, and
planning and urban design projects.
RTKL is an idea-based creative practice headquartered in Baltimore,

MD. Founded in 1946, RTKL carved out a niche in master planning
and design for government and private clients. Over the succeeding
decades, RTKL evolved into a full-service firm, adding the disciplines
of engineering, interior architecture, landscape architecture, and
environmental graphic design, and new project specialties including
residential, offices, retail centers, hotels, and health sciences projects.
The past two decades have brought further expansion, with mixed-
use, federal government, entertainment, and branding and identity
assignments.

The National Hellenic Museum, located in Chicago, is the heart of Hellenic
history, culture and arts for the United States.
To meet the needs of a growing

new 40,000 SF facility to house exhibit

Inspired by the Greek Key, the ancient

Located in the groundbreaking urban development, New Jiang Wan
Town−noted for its commitment to sustainable design−the New Jiang Wan
Cultural Center was designed to celebrate and showcase the environmental
sensitivity and community-oriented feel of the new town.
With 6,000-SM of exhibition, education,

facilities across two floors, the cultural
center provides a fluid interaction
between interior and exterior spaces.
Inspired by a rootstock tangled with
pieces of rock, the horizontal building
is highly integrated with the landscape

U.S. Capitol Visitor Center
Washington, D.C., United States
As the seat of the nation’s legislative branch, the U.S. Capitol building is
a highly recognizable and popular tourist stop in Washington, DC. RTKL
designed a 54,000-SM visitor center to showcase the significance and history
of this symbolic building and accommodate the growing spatial needs of
Congress.
With knowledge garnered from prior

work for the Architect of the Capitol,
RTKL made strengthened security a
design priority. The building was fitted
with state-of-the-art technology to
deliver adequate security measures,
material protection and multimedia
use. Located under the East Plaza, the
facility preserves views of the Capitol
and provides a congregating space.
Public events and congressional
meetings are held in the secure 450-
seat auditorium, outfitted for high-
quality multimedia displays. RTKL
designed a museum-quality space lit
with high ceilings and skylights and
equipped it with environmental controls
for displaying historical documents.
The project also includes a cafeteria,
multiple orientation theaters and
unassigned space to provide flexibility
to the site.

Ideally situated on Connecticut Avenue, one block from Dupont Circle, the
newly renovated 1225 Connecticut Avenue office building repositions the
landmark site with a state-of-the-art, LEED Platinum Core & Shell facility.
The client commissioned RTKL with

full building renovations that included
replacing the exterior, reconfiguring the
core, and redesigning the lobby. The
primary goals were to create a modern
building that would be compatible
with the surrounding historic context,
achieve approval from DC’s Historic
Preservation Office and attain LEED
certification.
RTKL’s design achieves each of these

goals while simultaneously honoring
the historic church that once occupied
the site. A tower added to the northwest
corner of the building subtly references
the church’s iconic bell tower and pays
tribute to its historic context. The new
facade features a glazed curtain wall
divided into six vertical segments that
maximizes natural light. Horizontal bays
guide the eye to the adjacent historic
structures and reinforce scale and
contextual compatibility. The project
boasts a fully-planted green roof that
underpins its LEED Platinum rating.

phase entertainment zone at the

venues. The existing eight-screen
cinema is expanded to 19 screens

development for a burgeoning region of Moscow.
The design team for Metropolis had

two goals: to introduce a modern
mixed-use environment that supports
around-the-clock activity while also
creating a sophisticated space that
fits into the local setting. Inspired by
the energy of the urban environment,
the design of Metropolis mimics an
open-air street scene. Retail corridors
that resemble shopping boulevards

Named Bulgaria’s retail building of the year in 2013, Paradise Center is
Sofia’s landmark retail and leisure destination, designed to showcase the
surrounding landscape and provide a contemporary, lush backdrop for
internationally renowned brands.
The design concept for Paradise

Center is the synergy between man
and nature, which is embodied in the
logo of the project and in every detail
of the building itself. Conveniently
located adjacent to current and planned
transport links, Paradise Center
connects Sofia’s affluent residential
communities south of the downtown

city. The building has been designed to
address this connection with dynamic

serve as dramatic bookends to the
broader development. The Hyatt is
topped with terraced levels that reach

hotel in Beijing sets the standard for the modern hotel experience in China.

Taj Exotica is a 300-room resort located within the Saraya Island
development of Ras Al Khaimah. Located on a pristine barrier island, the site
has dramatic views of the Arabian Sea as well as views inland toward the
mountains of Oman.
A wide channel of water separates the

Once completed, this will be China’s largest hospital ever built in one phase.
The academic hospital is part of China’s recent initiative to modernize
healthcare to international standards of excellence, so they selected RTKL for
the premier project.

is designing a 2,200-bed academic
hospital comprising three inpatient

women’s and children’s hospitals in North America. When it opened the
hospital’s all-private NICU and pediatric suites made Community North one

growing demand. After creating an expansion master plan with Johns
Hopkins International, RTKL continued to promote CLC’s international
presence by working with a local architect to design the first phase for joint
commission accreditation.

center. It is the largest healthcare facility set on the Catholic Church model.

on creating a leading medical center

proposed reworking the patient floors
from a purely five-bed ward layout to
a more flexible design enabling five-

Creating a building that is both beautiful and green, RTKL’s design team
formed a new campus environment and corporate community for Lenovo,
the multi-national personal technology company based in Beijing.
The overall approach was to connect

a series of courtyards, integrating

As a walkable, mixed-use development, Ramsay Exchange is the perfect
complement to the oldest settled community in Calgary, featuring reclaimed
historic structures, pedestrian-friendly streets, public art and enhanced
streetscapes.
Historically, Ramsay has been home to

Nanchang Qingshan Lake Western Shore Area to incorporate local industrial
heritage while creating a new district identity and maximizing development
potential.
As the portal of Nanchang facing the

with an inner harbor and canals,
