“Fly Away”
“I was scared to reach for it all, knowing that if I try, I’ll fall.” These lyrics in both the
music videos represented a meaningful message of don't be scared to chase your dreams and
become a better version of yourself. The official music video, “Fly Away,” by Toni Watson,
more well known as Tones, was released in 2020 and the main claim of this music video is to not
let the realities stop you from chasing and achieving your dreams. The alternate version of “Fly
Away” by the Pierce Brothers, Adrian Eagle, Alice Blake, the Melbourne Gospel Choir, and
Tones, focuses more on being your own independent person and achieving your dreams. You
don't need to be in a relationship to be happy and successful. Even though “Fly Away” and the
alternate version of “Fly Away” share a similar theme of genuine happiness and how to reach
your goals and dreams, they appeal to different audiences with different values. The official
music video represents how the realities of life should not slow you down with reaching your
goals, while the alternate version of “Fly Away” appeals to a more independent audience and
focuses more on being your own individual and achieving your dreams for yourself.
Between the two different music videos of “Fly Away,” the official music video is more
energetic and has different scenery throughout the video, for example, the cornfield and the stage
that Tones sang on in the very beginning of the video. The alternate version of “Fly Away” takes
place in the Melbournes Rod Laver Arena and that’s the only setting that takes place. The
official music video shows clips of couples making happy moments together, while Tones sings

about not fitting in and being scared that she will fail making her dreams come true. The
alternate version of “Fly Away” doesn’t show any pictures or clips of couples and while the
Pierce Brothers are singing, everyone is spread out in the aisles of the arena slowly dancing. This
supports my idea of the alternate version being more focused on independence and your own
genuine happiness and not focused on your significant others or your relationship status.
The genres of each music video of “Fly Away” differ greatly from each other. The official
music video is a pop culture type of song and is easy to dance to, while the alternate version is
more of a gospel anthem because the artists of the alternate version are massive Australian artists
and the Melbourne Gospel Choir helped transform the pop culture song into a more calm and
peaceful song, even with the same lyrics. The two music videos having a different tone and
mood make the audience of each video a little different. The audience of the official music video
is directed towards everyone, not one specific group of people. Everyone wants to achieve their
dreams and goals and everyone faces their realities, feeling like they’ll fail. The message of
being genuinely happy and not being afraid to fall to make your dreams become reality can relate
to everyone. On the other hand, the alternate version’s audience is more mature and independent.
I say this because the message behind the video is to focus on your own happiness, so the
audience of this video are people being afraid to be alone or people just getting out of a
relationship and needing to find what their own goals and dreams are. Even though the music
videos differentiate in meaning and their audiences, they share some similarities and differences
The official music video of “Fly Away” uses pathos by showing pictures and video clips
of happy couples making moments together. While the pictures and videos were popping up,
Tones was singing, “People still ask me why I’m here, no one seems to think that I fit in, that I

don't want to be like them, no cause’ I don't want to be like them.” This makes the listener feel a
sense of excitement and power because she is singing the message that she doesn't need to be
like those other couples and people because she is chasing her dreams. The alternate version of
“Fly Away” shows their usage of pathos in the beat of the music. It is very slow and graceful
throughout the song. It makes the audience feel a sense of peace and determination. Also,
everyone in the music video sings together and it makes the listener feel a sense of power. The
Pierce Brothers singing, “I have a dream that I could just fly away.” Having their own part in the
end of the video is empowering to the audience. Both of the music videos use pathos by making
the listeners feel empowered and determined. They differ from each other because the official
music video makes the audience think about their past relationships, making them upset because
it shows clips of couples being happy together. While the alternate version doesn’t show any
clips and everyone is spread out dancing alone, so the audience thinks more about themselves
Although many people will enjoy both versions of “Fly Away,” they have different
audiences and styles of music. You will find the alternate version will be slower and it is more of
a gospel anthem. While the official version is more upbeat and has more excitement in their
dancing, making it more of a pop culture type of song, making the audiences differ greatly. They
both use pathos by giving the audience determination and empowerment and they differentiate in
the peacefulness of the song. Overall, both versions of the song have their similarities and
differences.
