1. PURPOSE

Katerra.com Method Statement for Backfilling Works

The purpose of this method statement is to outline the procedures involved in back filling works including
selection of material, backfilling procedure, test requirement etc.

This method statement should be read in conjunction with Katerra SOP and relevant Indian standards, and
structural specifications. Any conflict between BOQ, specifications, GFC drawings etc. should be brought
to the notice of the client and get resolved before procurement/execution.

2. HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT

 It is the responsibility of the contractor to maintain safe and clean working conditions in all activities
related to backfilling works.
 Utmost care should be taken to prevent any accident during any activity of back filling work such as
accidents due to movement of vehicles, damage of live services, inappropriate storage of backfill
material, improper barricading of the trenches, insufficient signage, improper handling of the
compacting equipment’s, etc.
 Risk assessment should be carried out before the work starts. Risk assessment should contain all
possible risks, risk rating without control measures, control measures and risk rating after
implementation of corrective measures. Tool box talks should be conducted every week explaining
possible risks and its control measures. Record of risk assessment should be forwarded to the Kef
Infra HSE head within 24 hours from conducting the tool box talk.
 Clean environment should be maintained all around the work place including place of backfill,
storage location of backfill material etc. Proper dust control measures should be adopted at site to
prevent spreading of dust due to truck and other machinery movement. Roads should be cleaned by
the contractor whenever there is spillage of soil from the truck while moving inside the site or in
public road.

3. QUALITY CONTROL & QUALITY ASSURANCE

 Utmost care should be taken to ensure that the backfilling is being carried out as per the approved

drawings only.

 Material from approved source only should be used for backfilling works. Soil with excess clay like

black cotton soil, soil with debris and vegetation should not be used.

 Soil sample should be tested in 3rd party lab to verify the Atterberg limits, maximum dry density

(MDD), optimum moisture content (OMC) etc. prior to start using at site for backfilling.

 The back fill material should not contain boulder of size exceeding 50mm

 Backfilling should be carried out in layers. Unless otherwise mentioned the compacted layer

thickness should not exceed 200mm for the top 1m and 300mm below top 1m portion.

 The top layer (sub-grade) just below super structure should achieve 95% of compaction. Three

layers below the top layer should achieve 90% and layers below that need to achieve 80%

compaction.

 Tests should be conducted to determine degree of compaction.

 Backfilling around the water retaining structures shall be done only after testing of structures against

leakage is done.

 Backfilling behind retaining walls shall be done only after completion of waterproofing works.

While compacting, the soil layer, extreme care should be taken to avoid the damage of

waterproofing treatment by the movement of compacting equipment’s.

5. EXECUTION OF WORK

 Backfilling work shall not start until site Engineer gives his approval to do so. Material used for
backfilling shall be any one or combination of soil types mentioned.
 Backfilling shall be done in layers. The thickness of compacted layer shall not exceed 200mm for
top 1m depth of backfill and 300mm for depth below 1m.

 The soil then shall be watered adequately and to be compacted using mechanical compacting
equipment’s when the moisture content in the soil is optimum. The optimum moisture content in the
soil shall be determined through third party lab investigation.
 The top layer (sub-grade) just below super structure should achieve 95% of compaction. Three
layers below the top layer should achieve 90% and layers below that need to achieve 80%
compaction.
 After completion of the final layer of soil, at least three cores shall be taken from the areas directed
by the client or client representative and the soil shall be tested in laboratory for the degree of
compaction achieved.
 If the soil is excessively wet, it shall be allowed to dry sufficient before compaction. Approximately
OMC should be maintained.
 Compaction shall be done with suitable mechanical equipment such as plate vibrator, vibratory or
tendon roller, or 10T power roller as suitable for the area to be compacted. In areas where
mechanized compaction cannot be done, hand compaction shall be resorted to as directed by the site
engineer. Overall compacted thickness of soil shall be 200mm (max) unless mentioned otherwise.
 Any such discrepancy should be brought to the notice of the client or client representative and proper
corrective action should be implemented before proceeding with further backfilling.
