INTRODUCTORY MESSAGE

Module Name: The Effects of the Applied Social Sciences Processes 1

This module on “The Effects of the Applied Social Sciences Processes 1” deals with
activities that could help the learners understand concepts on social awareness, self-
awareness and self-knowledge, attitude and value change, behavioral and structural
change.

To the teacher:
In this part of the lesson, the teacher presented the application of applied social
sciences process on individual, groups and community and how the disciplines in applied
social sciences to the society and its individual’s social awareness, self-awareness and self-
knowledge.

To the Learners:

The objectives of this module are best achieved if the learners would be able to
evaluate the effects and application of the Social Sciences to the learners in practice.
Additionally, learners are required to:

1. Read and understand the instructions properly;


2. Write their answers in the notebook.
3. Answer the pretest prior to the lesson proper;
4. Take note of the terminologies (mark and labeled as bold) cited relevant to the
study of Discipline and Ideas in Applied Social Sciences;
5. Self–check and compare your answers against the key answer found at the

Every part of this module contains activities that will help you in developing your
cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills.
In this module, you are expected to:

1. Analyze the effects of applied Social Sciences processes on individuals,


groups, and society. (HUMSS_DIASS12-lle-f-44)

2. Evaluate the effects of certain program of projects on knowledge, attitude, and


behavior of individuals, groups, and society. (HUMSS_DIASS12-lle-i-45

Based on your understanding, can you state one of the effects of Social Sciences
processes (social services of DSWD) in your locality? (15 points)
In previous chapter you had learned the settings, processes, methods and tools
in social work. The processes on how Applied Social Sciences practices and its effects in
individual, groups and community are being discussed in this module.

Applied Social Sciences come with a wide range of practitioner skills in areas such
as advocacy, counselling, and case management, and the knowledge and experience to
be able to work with individuals, groups and communities to improve social functioning.

2.1 SOCIAL AWARENESS, SELF-AWARENESS, AND SELF-KNOWLEDGE


▪ Essential for quality participation and functioning, in society. It will lead us to become
conscious and aware of ourselves as beings.
▪ Social awareness is important for managing own response to change, and it forms
an essential part of interpersonal intelligence. For students, this involves recognizing
other’s feelings and knows when to assist others. His become the foundation of
student understanding of their role in advocacy in society and to build their capacity
to critique societal constructs and forms of discrimination, like racism.
▪ Self-awareness is an important step toward understanding and self-mastery and
its forms an essential part of intrapersonal and emotional intelligence. It is having
the capacity to understand your personality, behaviors, habits, and emotions. As a
student, it involves identifying the factors that influence your emotional response.
A self-aware individual acts with personal and social capability through recognition
of emotions, recognition of personal qualities and achievements, understanding
oneself as learner, and developing a reflective practice.

2.2 ATTITUDE AND VALUE CHANGE


Tensions emanating from technological, social, and economic change bring about
attitude and value change. There is a need to have attitudinal and value transformation on
negative inclinations like the “ Bahala Na “ attitude; these cannot lead to individual, group,
or group sustainability. Our attitude and values must change with time, so as to allow our
new abilities to survive to emerge.

2.3 BEHAVIORAL CHANGE


Behavior is acquired slowly and one’s part in your life you will earn the difficulty of
behavioral change. Achieving behavioral change demands multiple solutions and several
different techniques. Applied Social Sciences bring in a wealth of approaches, techniques
and tools to facilitate change on the individual and group level. Behavioral change has
been associated with the role of the applied Social Science progress. The practice and
insights from social work and counseling influencing progress in conflict management. The
campaign against the spread of AHIV and prevention as well as care for afflicted is largely
due to the input from applied Social Sciences and the work of the professionals in the
practice.

2.4 STRUCTURAL CHANGE


Refers to radical shift in the way reality is recognized and does not necessarily the
substantive change. Structural change is the transformation of policy, legal, social,
cultural, economic/ or physical aspects. It requires long-term interventions that build on
knowledge, behavior an attitude modification across multiple domains: public and private
institutions, civil society, community groups, and the general population. This is realizable
when there is transformation in dominant sectors that help to remove barriers to equity
such as health and safety, education, employment, housing, income and wealth.
