Preparing For An Engineering Career
ENGINEERING DESIGN
DESIGN PROCESS:
1. Recognizing the need for a product or service, it may identify by you, by the company and by a third party.
2. Understanding and defining the problem, it is the most important step in any design process.
3. Research and preparation, it helps to determine if the product is already existing.
4. Conceptualization, as an engineer you must know how to budget you time, a good engineer is good at managing
their time to work productively and efficiently.
5. Synthesis, a good engineer has a firm grasp of the fundamental principles of engineering. Engineers tend to be
analytical, detailed-oriented, and creative.
6. Evaluation, engineers should make sure that all the calculations are performed correctly.
7. Optimization, this means minimization and maximization. There are two broad types of design: Functional and
optimized design. Optimized design is always based on a particular criterion, such as strength, cost, size, weight,
noise, reliability, or performance.
8. Presentation, Presenting the final solution. Need to communicate your solution to the client, who may be your
boss, another group within the company, or an outside customer. May prepare oral and written presentation.
ECONOMICS ENGINEERING
It involves formulating, estimating, and evaluating the economic outcomes when alternatives to accomplish a
defined purpose are available.
Meaning:
It is a profession in which knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study experience and
practice is applies with judgment to develop ways to utilize economically the material and forces of nature for
the benefit of mankind.
ECONOMICS
It is a social science that describes the factors that determine the production.

aircraft, spacecraft, and missiles.
6. Biomedical Engineering – it is the combination of biology, chemistry, medicine, and engineering to solve a wide
range of medical and health-related problems.
7. Chemical Engineering - it is using the principles of chemistry and basic engineering sciences to solve variety
problem related to the production of chemicals.
8. Environmental Engineering – it is the newest specialization of engineering, it applies the chemistry, biology, and
engineering to address issues related to water and air pollution control, hazardous waste, recycling, and waste
disposal.
9. Manufacturing Engineering – they develop, coordinate, and supervise the process of manufacturing all types of
products.
10. Petroleum – it is specializing in the discovery and production of oil and natural gases.
11. Nuclear – they develop, design, monitor, and operate nuclear power equipment that derives to power from
nuclear energy.
12. Mining – it is a collaboration with geologist and metallurgical engineers, find, extract, and prepare coal to use by
the utility companies.

PATENT WEEK
PATENT
The right given by the patent in the language of the statute and of the grant itself includes “the right to exclude others
from making, using, offering for sale, or selling” the invention.
TRADEMARK/SERVIVE MARK
Trademark and service mark is a name, word, or symbol that the company uses to distinguish their products and services
from others. Trademark is right issued in a company that excludes others from using the same or similar products and
services.
COPYRIGHT
It is a law that covers the original works of the authorship such as in the dramatic, literary, musical, artistic, and other
types of intellectual works.
TEAMWORK
It is a group of individuals with expertise, problem solving skills, and talents who are working together to achieve a
common goal.
Secondary Roles:
1. Organizer
2. Creator
3. Motivator
4. Finisher
5. Team worker
6. Solver
7. Evaluator
8. Gatherer
