FIELDTRIP
(MODULE 1)
INTRODUCTION
Field trips are seen as a useful tool in education providing experiential learning outside of the four walls
of a classroom. The idea behind this situated learning experience is to contextualize knowledge in order to develop
a deeper understanding. On the other hand, seminars or small group tutorials, like lectures, will vary according to
the discipline and degree program. The purpose of seminars is to explore and extend individuals knowledge of
the topics that have been covered in lectures. This may be through in-depth discussion of the key issues, related key
texts and articles; differing theories; and current debate. Moreover, seminars are a great opportunity for everyone
to practice a number of essential academic and professional skills, such as: discussing the subject with clarity; arguing
logically and tactfully; listening to different points of view; making considered criticisms and comments; and,
expressing everyone’s opinions and identifying the evidence upon which they are based. As such it offers a great
environment to develop and hone skills that will be very valuable now and in the future.
Explore more in the field of computer science, including research, careers, and the
contributions of technology.
Encourage a broad, accurate view of computer science and related fields.
Establish an environment for discussion, debate, and community.
Inspire interest, knowledge, and motivation in their field.
Understand the major areas of computer science through various seminars conducted by
resource persons.
LESSON 1 : Orientation
LESSON 2: Introduction to Seminars and Fieldtrip
In order to benefit profoundly from this module, please be guided by all the key points presented below:
1) This module contains two (2) lessons. Each lesson is explained substantively. Read the
explanations thoroughly so that you could understand the lesson fully.
2) On the first page of each lesson, you will find the specific learning outcomes (SLOs) of each
lesson. SLOs are knowledge and skills you are expected to acquire at the end of the lesson.
Read them carefully.
3) You must answer the Learning Activities/Exercises (LAEs). The LAEs are designed to help you
acquire the specific learning outcomes.
4) Feel free to chat, call, text or send an email message to me if you have questions, reactions,
or reflections about the contents or activities in the module. (You can find my contact details in
our group page.)
5) The Practice Task/Assessment and the Assignment shall be checked by me.
LESSON 1
ORIENTATION
MOTIVATION/PROMPTING QUESTIONS
Could you imagine someone training adequately to become an archaeologist without going out into the field
to participate in the nuts-and-bolts activities of excavating an actual historical site? How about an aspiring
doctor who is not expose to the actual medical field? What do you think is the importance of seminars and
fieldtrip?
DISCUSSION
Read thoroughly the CMO no. 17 about the policies and guidelines on educational tours
and field trips of college and graduate students.

INTRODUCTION TO SEMINARS AND FIELDTRIP
MOTIVATION/PROMPTING QUESTIONS
Have you been to any seminars/fieldtrips? If yes, where and when? What are your
takeaways on that seminar? Why do you think it is important to attend seminars? Do you gain more
experience, skills and knowledge after attending the seminar/fieldtrip?
DISCUSSION
Field trips and seminars engage students in studies beyond what would be the case in a classroom or
lecture hall setting. In other words, students are more captivated by first-hand encounters with the
subject matter, which facilitates learning. Students who go on field trips become more motivated to
learn and also it can boost a student's confidence, allowing a child to experiment or experience
educational opportunities is a safe and fun environment that will in turn boost learning. Students will be
motivated to learn in new ways, and this improves the retention and understanding of facts. The intimate
interaction with learning that field trips allow can inspire students to consider career paths.
FIELDTRIP
It is a useful tool in education that provides experiential learning outside of the four walls of a
classroom. (Greenhalgh, 2011).
A field trip can be a worthwhile educational endeavour, even in these days of a greater
emphasis on standards and the ensuing high stakes testing.
Field trips, when done well, can be used to support the teaching of state standards just as well
as a classroom lesson plan can.
A field trip can, in many ways, engage a student in the content, and should be considered when
practical. Dr. John Dewey (1938), the well-known educational theorist of the early 20th century,
emphasized the importance of experience in constructing one’s education.
According to Dewey, “In what I have said I have taken for granted the soundness of the principle
that education in order to accomplish its ends both for the individual learner and for society
must be based on experience – which is always the actual life-experience of some individual”
(Dewey, p. 89,1938).
Further, effective use of field trips needs to be considered more fully. To be effective they must follow
a number of different stages which includes:
Pre-trip planning: The trip itself must encourage learners to engage at all times. They should
be given the opportunity to gain hands on experience where possible.
The post-trip planning should be place following the field trip. Activities should be planned in
class to reinforce the learning that has taken place however this should be in addition to the
usual classroom based activities. Activities in classroom can be related to the context of the
field trip to allow students to spend time reflecting.
In terms of learning, an educational field trip is one of the most fantastic ways for young students
to learn through real life. It is true that the educational field trip is a perfect combination of
sightseeing, learning, traveling and hands-on learning opportunities.
Seminars or small group tutorials, like lectures, will vary according to the discipline and
degree programme.
These trips contribute significantly to the cognitive development of children mostly because
educational travel allows students to witness authentic things beyond the theory of subjects by
actually experiencing and seeing in real life.
Students will develop a sense of enjoyment and feel the subject closer without the pressure of
doing exercises or being called to answer a question.
It erases the boredom of classroom lectures and gives students the opportunity to visit new
places and new environment which are good ways to awaken students’ interest and learn by
actually doing a hands-on experience.
SEMINARS
They usually consist of a meeting between a tutor and a group of between 6 and 30
students.
Further, seminars are a great opportunity for everyone to practice a number of essential
academic and professional skills, such as:
discussing the subject with clarity;
arguing logically and tactfully;
listening to different points of view;
making considered criticisms and comments; and,
Expressing the opinions and identifying the evidence upon which
they are based.
PURPOSE OF SEMINARS
The purpose of seminars is to explore and extend individual’s knowledge of the topics that
have been covered in lectures. This may be through in-depth discussion of the key issues,
related key texts and articles; differing theories; and current debate. Quite often the tutor
will set work or topics in advance for everyone to research and present to the rest of the
group at a later date Plymouth University (2011).
LEARNING ACTIVITIES/EXERCISES
Have you attended any seminars or fieldtrip previously? If yes, please narrate your
