YEAR/BLOCK/SPECIALIZATION:

Nothing is indeed more important in the world than our lives. It will teach us how to fight
after we have fallen. This will lead us to strive to succeed in a world full of criticism and
negativity.
Let me share with you one of my experiences during the recent PASUC event held at
Catanduanes State University.
But first of all, I want to explain to you what this event is about. The Philippine
Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) in Bicol chaired by Dr. Arnulfo M.
Mascarinas, Bicol University (BU) President, held its PASUC-5 Culture and Arts Festival last
April 28-30, 2022. The Catanduanes State University (CatSU) led by its SUC President III, Dr.
Patrick Alain T. Azanza, hosted this year’s event which has its theme, “Art and Culture of Hope,
Towards Increased Appreciation.” It has various competitions that SUCs in the Bicol region will
participate in. These include Catanduanes State University (CatSU) as host, Bicol State College
of Applied Science and Technology (BisCAST), Bicol University (BU), Central Bicol State
University of Agriculture (CBSUA), University of Camarines Norte (UCN), Polytechnic State
University of Bicol (PSUB), Dr. Emilio B. Espinosa Sr. Memorial State College of Agriculture
and Technology (DEBESMSCAT), Partido State University (PasSU), and Sorsogon State
University (SSU).
Now, here is my reflection on my PASUC journey. This is indeed a lifetime opportunity
that gave me some realizations about how experiences in life teach us.
Even before the PASUC event, the university is already seeking participants in numerous
contests. I was hesitant to participate at first since the fare from San Miguel to Virac is so
expensive. However, our professor, ma'am Romeelen Go-Vela, stated that the competition
participant will be exempted from the final test. That's when I thought about it and decided to
join so that I can reduce my activities while also having the opportunity to compete in college
competitions. But the surprising thing here is that we were not informed that we would be
competing in the regional competition. Our professor is only providing us with a competition list.
Before our professor's invitation, another professor invited me to participate in extemporaneous
speaking. But I'm still considering joining. Then, that’s when the time our theatrical arts
professor mentioned the PASUC competition. Because I'm accustomed to being alone, I
considered participating in a group competition to improve my social skills. Together with me
are Mack Neil Vital, Love Magtagñob, Clifford Robinson Guerrero, and Josaphat Sierra.
However, practicing is difficult because I'm the only one who doesn't belong in the group.
They're friends, and I'm new to the group. After Aliyah Dawn Tabor backed out, I was tasked
with writing the script for the short and sweet play. I felt nervous and challenged because my
teammates didn't even assist me in completing the task, nevertheless, they did a wonderful
performance during the competition. But because my coach was holding two events, a short and
sweet play and a radio drama, I collaborated with her. Coach and I discussed the radio drama
script that I had written. To be honest, I was completely no idea of what will happen at that
event, hence my script ultimately failed. However, I realized that you either win or lose in a
competition. Even if I didn't win the radio drama, I'm still pleased since we won the short and
sweet play event. We got first place for the overall championship while Bicol University was
declared as the champion. Also, I came to realize that winning the competition requires
collective unity. It is a collaborative effort that a group must always have. In addition, I am
grateful to our coach for looking after us for six days. She provided us lunch and even placed
those who were constantly late to practice to sleep in his office so that they wouldn't be late for
school.  She answered my one-week fare merely to attend practices because I was the only poor
member in our group. Almost all of them are wealthy, and their homes are within close
proximity of CatSU. They then offered me snacks. I'm ashamed since their outfits are stunning,
while mine are just repeated. But I'm grateful because they didn't treat me as though I were
different. I realized that the standard of living is not the basis to have a sense of belongingness
and building friendships. I am more than thankful to our professor as well. Even though she is
strict, I came to understand that at the end of the day, all she wants is the best for us, her
students. Ultimately, I am grateful enough to the university for trusting our talents to represent
CatSU in the PASUC event. I am deeply honored and pleased.
From this experience, it did not only teach me how to deal with them, but it taught me
that life is happier when with someone, even in hardship or comfort. Having a friend and
solidarity are things that cannot be replaced by any other expensive material. There is nothing
more important in the world than our lives, therefore, let us do everything for its goodness.
This particular event is unforgettable in my life. Not only is this an ordinary day of
competition already at the university, but it is more than that, it is a battle of life, whether you
win or lose, never surrender but rather, continue to strive for success.
