Children Summer Camp 2022 Report

ExTentia 2022
Organized/conducted by Antenna Trust and EXIST Trust
Madurai
Introduction
Still now summer camp has been a costly one for have-nots. Slum children, poor
and government school going children had never attended in any of the summer
camps organized by private schools. We thought that this kind of experience
should be made available to the poor children at least who are studying in our
tuition centers/evening education centers.

We started to conduct summer camp in the year 2013 for 20 children. It was two
days camp. Initially staff only handled the camp. We started to hire professional
trainers from the reputed institutes and now the camp is completely handled by
professional trainers in the respective fields. Next two years (2014&2015) it was
three days camp. And the next two years (2016&17) it was four days camp. In the
year 2018 It was 5 days camp, in the year 2019 it was 7 days camp. In this camp
200 children benefited. Due to corona situation we had not conducted camps in
the year 2020 and 2021.

Since we had no special fund for conducting summer camp, we had been raised
funds with personal and NGO friends to meet out the heavy expenses involved in
conducting the camp. In the year 2013 we received a sponsorship for distributing
T shirts to children from “SHE garments “ Madurai and also received a small
donations. The amount of donations/contributions raised gradually increased in
every year. Also the standard of camp had been improved year by year. Every
year we receive T shirts from the same business organization on free of cost.

We had last touch with contributors for the last two years we did not know how
much we could expect contributions from friends in the changed situation. At this
juncture every material and service had become costly. By taking these two
factors into considerations we fixed 5 days target for summer camp in this year
2022. Also we prepared ourselves to reduce the number of days if we do not get
required amount of support from friends.

our mind. During the yoga exercises we really got refreshed and felt peacefulness.
The yoga teacher also taught many useful messages for our life. Due to this good
start of the day, we experienced refreshes in the whole day.

2.Art from waste

In this session children were divided into three groups according to
their age. This session was handled by Ms.Chandra and supported by
Yoga masters Ms.Vijayalakshmi and Ms. Soundarya.

For each group exercises were planned in the following way.

For the children in standard 1st to 4th

1.Snow man wall hanging, 2. paper flower hanging.

For the children in standard 5th to 8th

1.Card board doll( varli doll)
2. Paper mouse
3. Paper folding fish
For the children in standard 9th and above

These three groups did their tasks by using wastes – like news
papers, card board, paper cups, colour thread wastes, strings, sticks
etc
After displaying their dolls, their creations in the valedictory,
children took all their products to their home. Surely they had
enjoyment with their parents along with the artful articles.

We liked this session very much. In this session we learned how we can
use creatively the wasted materials and make/create artistic and useful
articles out of it. I learned to create flower basket by using wasted
paper cup, made dolls by using sticks, old news paper, made flowers by
using wasted papers etc. the teacher taught us with simple techniques
and language. really we enjoyed our creativeness when we made
things out of wasted materials.
We made puppet from chart paper and stick. We had made one picture
by using papers and charts. We also coloured the picture.

3.Karate
Defensive measure is important to everyone to protect themselves
from any untoward attack or incidents. Karate is one such martial art
exclusively taught to children for defensive purposes. The camp also
planned to taught children on karate martial art. We approached
Takewondo Institute in this regard. Karate Master Mr.Narayanan was
more willing to work with us. Charged very minimum fee for the
services. This year also Masters Mr.Karthick and Mr.Snjeev trained our
children on Karate steps. For the first two days children practiced
general steps on karate in one group. From third day onwards they
were divided into two groups –senior group and junior group. Both the
groups had displayed their demonstrations during the valedictory

4. Mud pot painting

Children practiced this session with two types of mud pots. One was big
flower vase and another was small pot. As usual small children were
given small pots and big children were given big flower vase. They
following steps were covered in the five days to paint the mud pot
beautifully.

Step 1: children used sand paper to smoothen the surface of the pot.

Step 2: they painted the outer surface of the pot using white primer

Step 3: after the coat of primer dried, the children used black enamel to
paint the surface of the pot.

Step 4: once the coat of enamel dried, the students used M-seal to
embellish the outer surface of the pot.

Step 5 : The designs created using M-seal were then painted colourfully
using fevicryl Pearl colours.

In the last day all the vases and pots were looked beautiful. The
children joyfully took their product to their home. Along with their
parents they enjoyed the same. Sure this will make them remember the
memories of the camp on every day.

On the first day we got a raw mud pot. At the end of the fifth day we had a
colourful pot with flowers and leaves on that. We painted the leaves and the
flowers with beautiful colours that we like most. Everyone loved to see the
beautiful pot on the last day. The teacher taught us step by step. We did it
fantastically.

5. Clay modeling
Once, the children in villages had opportunity to make various
household things as a hobby and game out of clay that was available
naturally at village ponds. But in today life situation this hobby or game
had gone, no more available to the children in villages.
This camp had clay modeling as one of the skill sets to impart among
the children. Around 20 children participated in this creative art. The
resource person Ms.Prarthana got the required quantum of clay from
her friends on free of cost. We must thank her for this job.

The following three steps were followed in this session.

Step 1: the children were taught to bring the clay to the correct
consistency using water.

Step 2: two terracotta models of sheep in varying sizes were placed in

front of them. They were asked to imitate the model using the clay
provided to them.

Step 3: once they understood and got used to the texture of the clay,
they were asked to create their own sculptures .

Children were introduced to making various sculptures like animals,

household things, pots etc out of clay. Really the children enjoyed it
and made several things. Each day a child made more than one
sculpture. For avoiding dirtying the floor of the hall we used plastic
sheet and the children took responsibility of keeping the hall floor
clean.

6.Drawing
Two teachers (Mr.Villayutham and Mr. Annadurai were the resource
persons. Both were drawing masters in schools. One master is working
with TVS group of schools) handled the session. Around 30 children
participated in this session. Children were trained to draw picture of
house and its background, flower basket, flower pot, etc. they were
trained on colouring with water colours. Every child had drawn @ one
picture per day. The masters had given feedback continuously and
corrected the same then and there. Really every children drawn
pictures beautifully.

7. Scientific Experiments
We designed this session to inculcate scientific thinking among
the children. By demonstrating various experiments among the
children, we believe that they will get motivated to do such
kinds of experiments on their own. In the past also our children
did many scientific experiments on various occasions at their
respective center level.
This year we had tie up with Tamilnadu Science Forum (TNSF)
for this purpose. Every day TNSF sent two trainers. On fourth
day fifth day two trainers came in total. In total 8 trainers we
received from TNSF.
The following topics were covered
 Air pressure
 What is science – What is scientific thinking
 What is social science
 How it is raining , kinds of rain
 Why seasons are happening
 Why there is full moon and moonless sky
 Solar system, milky way, galaxies, space
Children were asked many questions and tried to understand
the environment and their life situation in a scientific way.
Children liked this session very much

In this session we learned the following

 What is science
 Experiments involved with air pressure
 Learned a science song
 Air circulation in the space was demonstrated through a paper exercise.
When a paper fall from top it simply fall down. When it was folded it
revolved and fall down. It was because of the movement of the air in the
folding gaps. Every child in the group did this exercise separately.
 When you swing a string normally it won’t give any sound. When you keep
the string between two hands tightly and make a beat on the string then
you get a sound from the string due to the vibration it make in the air.

8. Street theatre
The theme of the skits the children prepared was protecting the nature.
Children were introduced to various techniques of street theatre.
Children learned to create structures, postures by using their bodies.
Also children learned to express feelings through their facial
expressions. The children made two skits.

One was about save/protect the nature. The following was the story of
the skit. People were happy when more number of trees were in the
forest. People started to cut trees for various purposes. The forest had
become treeless. The natural life of people was gone. People suffered a
lot. This skit was done without a single word and only by mimes,
postures and movements.

The other one is on a story involving ant, hunter, dove, river. The story
was simple - Ant saved doves when they were about to capture by a
hunter by his net and in turn the doves saved the ant when it was
floating on a river.

Usually if any one says a message orally to a community of people it

won’t reach them as it was intended. But if the message is given
through a cultural media like skit it reaches the people to depth of their
heart. It won’t be easily forgotten. Since skit gives the message with
scenes and feelings it reaches the people easily. The children learned to
create scenes and express their feelings through the street theatre
techniques.

Mr.Francis, a master trainer in various cultural forms, a legendary

cultural trainer handled the session.

In this session we learned how we can use our body to depict various scenes, and
express feelings. We also learned how to express feelings through our faces.
Among the dram group we divided into two groups and each group practiced one
skit.
 Mirror game
 Acted on various posture such as branches of a tree
 Theme of the skit we performed was – people were happy when there was
more number trees around villages and cities and the happiness were gone
when trees were cut down for various reasons/purposes.

9. Parai
Parai is an traditional instrument beating with dance art. It has its own
history. It is one of the cultural identities of Tamil people. So, Tamil
people usually attached with this dance.

This session was handled by Mr.Velmurugan from Kudal Kalai Kulu

Madurai. He is a professional trainer cum performer.
A group of children from our camp learned parai. Children were very
much enthusiastic while learning the parai. They enjoyed when they
beat parai. The trainer taught the children the following 7 basic steps.
According to the steps the children had beaten the parai. Simply the
parai attam is dance with beating parai instrument. Children learned
the both.
The following 7 steps were taught to the children in the five days.
Step -1- Theem, Tha, Tha, Ku, , Tha, Ku Ku, Tha.
Step -2-Tha , Ku Ku, Tha, Tha, Ku Ku, Tha.

Step -7- Ta Ki Ta, Ta Ki Ta, Thom, Ta Ki Ta, Ta Ki Ta, Thom.

10. Karagattam
No festival in rural and urban Tamilnadu celebrated without
karagattam. Karagattam has become symbol of festival celebrations.
Men and women perform the art. Yes, it is a traditional art.
This session was handles by Ms.Sundari. She too come from Koodal
kalai Kulu Madurai. She got university degree in this art. She is a
professional trainer and performer.

Children practiced basic steps in karagam every day. From second day

11.Oyil Kummi Attam

Oyil kummi Attam is a folk dance. Usually rural village youth practice
before their village festival and perform during the festival. They usually
wore uniform clothing and have kerchief in both the hands. The dance
is being performed along with traditional drum beats either “Thavil” or
“Urumi”.
Since we did not have separate trainer for this myself, Rajendran,
handled the session. Around 10 basic steps were practiced in this
session. 30 children participated in these practices. From third day
onwards children started to practice the steps for the song .every day
the performance had been improved. While they practicing they
danced in circle. When they performed during the valedictory they
performed in two lines, small children in front and senior children in the
back. Really the children performed well. The participants enjoyed the
dance.

We heard about oyil kummi. It is a traditional folk dance. Village people used to
perform at their village festivals. We learned 4 steps in the first day. Second day
we learned 4 more steps. Third day we learned two more steps and started to
dance on a famous Tamil folk song (Thottu kadai orathile). Third day, fourth day
and fifth day we practiced for the song. And during the valedictory function we
performed well and got applause from the audience and guests.

12. Cine Folk Dance

This was the last session of every day. We call this session as dance
session. Two dance masters from Yuforia institute Madurai handled.
These two masters made all the children to dance for the following two
cine songs :-
1. Jolly o gymkhana song
2. Vambula thumbula song
These two masters taught children differently. Taught very simple steps
that relate with the Songs. Every stanza was played and they
choreographed various steps for that stanza. The children picked up the
steps and easilydanced for the songs.

This was the last session of everyday. We all learned this dance together. The
teacher taught this dance with great love and simple steps. Everyone of us
learned this dance easily and we performed dance for two songs. Really it was
great achievement in just five hours practices (@ one hour per day). Every day we
learned many steps. First day we completed half of a song. Second day we
completed the full song. Third day we practiced our dance for the full song. Fourth
day we started to dance for one more song. Fifth day we practiced for the two
songs in whole. During the valedictory function we had performed well and the
whole hall was full of joy.

Visitors and their accommodation in the programme

The camp had visitors. On the third day 30 children from Marani and
Koolapandi village , 5 teachers (children evening education) from the
same village joined in the camp. Also 10 teachers (children evening

Hall and Campus

The hall was enough to accommodate around 130 children. It was round in shape.
It has all the facility-lighting, fans, sound system, video facility, mike set system,
white board, enough furniture, tables etc. So we did not have any difficulties.
Instead we enjoyed the hall. Even we conducted three sessions at a time – like
drawing, mud pot painting and clay modeling. all these three sessions were gone
at a time. Different trainers handled each session.

The campus was beautiful, green and having more space. Many sessions were
conducted outside the hall i.e. in campus. Sessions such as Scientific experiments,
Karate 2nd badge, Street theatre, Parai, karagam, oyil kummi etc were conducted
outside the hall.

The campus has play structures. The children enjoyed a lot in playing in those
structures such as sea saw, swing, etc.

First Aid
We received a first aid kit from Dr.Gandhirajan (Thangaraj Hospital K K
nagar). Every time we conduct summer camp we used to get first aid kit
from him on free of cost. The first aid kit contained cotton rolls,
oinment and tablets. The tablets were for giving first aid to the
following ailments such as – fever, head ache, itching, cold, cough, pain,
loose motion, stomach ache, vomiting and vomiting sensation etc

Mr. Jayaraj from Antenna trust added the kit with move ointment and
detol etc.
Only three children were given aid on only one day. Two girls used

 All felt that the campus in which the camp was organized was safe and
protective.
 In today context mostly the children do not engage in physical exercises
and they spend more time in seeing TV shows and have fun with mobile.
This camp was completely different. It had given 100% physical exercises
and learning out of it. Really it rejuvenated the children both mentally and
physically.
 The camp re-introduced the traditional art forms like Karagattam,
Oyilattam and Parai to the children and it had given opportunity to learn
several things in that art forms and did beautiful performances.
 This camp imparted skills, knowledge and attitudes beyond the academic
subjects but necessary for the life and community living.
 All the sessions were handled by the professionals in those subjects. So the
children were given best learning opportunities.
 Sumer camp opportunity had been costly one and always it was
unaffordable and un-available to the poor children. This camp made it
available to the poor and slum children and on free of cost.

 For many of us (children) this summer camp experience is new

 We got refreshed and rejuvenated
 We got so much excitement
 Learned many new things
 During the corona period we were shut down within the doors and walls for
months.
 These two days we were at the height of excitement and we forgot those
bad memories of corona lockdown experiences

or things, Karate steps, street theatre techniques and skits, oyil kummi folk
dance, Karakattaam folk dance, making many creative things with clay,
mud pot painting with artistic tuch, cine folk dance, drawing with water

 We forgot the wasteful spending times on seeing TV shows and on mobile
searches and games on these five days.
 We felt that five days camp had gone too quickly. It would have been more
number of days. We enjoyed all the five days. At least the camp would have
been conducted for seven days.
 We enjoyed and made lots of noises. The masters, teachers and the
organizers treated us with patience and with love. Every master taught us
