CHAPTER-1 - HISTORY OF BAHRAIN

Evidence unearthed archeologist indicates that Bahrain was inhabited at least 50000 years ago and
possibly 100000 years. Some flint tools found on the island suggest and prove that agriculture has been
praticed in Bahrain as earlier as 8000AC.

*) DILMUN:The first reference to Bahrain was the third millennium BC when it was known as Dilmun a
paradise described in epic of Gilgamesh. This name was given by the Sumerians in around 2500BC.The
ancient city of Bahrain Fort (Portugese Fort)has a population of 7000,a significant number among that
time.

*) TYLOS:The next significant chapter in Bahrain's history occurred during the time of Alexander the
great, When the Macedonian Emperor's ship arrived at an island (Bahrain). The Greek renamed it as
Tylos and settled here for some years.

*) AWAL:During the Pre-Islamic era Bahrain was known as Awal until the 13th century AD. This name
is associated with the name of Pagon idol worshipped by Awal Tribe. The name was given to Awal
Island in the 13th century.

*) AL KHALIFA DYNASTY: His majesty Al Khalifa has been ruling Bahrain since Ahmed Bin
Muhammud Al Khalifa Al Fateh successors and his sons, Salman and Abdullah signed a treaty with the
British East India Company in 1820 and 1861. Accession of Shaikh Isa Al Khalifa in 1864 marked the
beginning of a period of stability and prosperity.

*) 20th CENTURY:In the early 1930's direction Bahrain progressed rapidly under the direction of Shaikh
Isa's succession, Sheikh Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa. The islands first electric power station was
commissioned, oil was struck (1932) a telephone system was established and first aircraft landed during
his period. Since 1961, the accession of Shaikh Bin Salman Al Khalifa, Bahrain continued the expression
of peace and harmony created by the great grandfather over hundred years earlier. The declaration of
independence on August 14,1971 began a new chapter in the island's history Shaikh Isa's 38 years reign
saw Bahrain's development into a major regional banking trade centers. He died in 1999 . He was
succeeded by his son Shaikh Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa was proclaimed the country's first king (and
Bahrain a Kingdom) after the people’s referendum whelming in favour since his attention to power. The
popular King introduced a spring of reforms including holding elections, instituting a bicameral
parliament and giving women right to vote.
