I. DETAIL QUESTIONS: Watch for Keywords and Synonyms
Keywords are the most important words in a question. These keywords will appear in the passage, next to the details
that will answer the question. If you can find the keywords, you will also be able to locate the details around them.
Synonyms are words with similar definitions. For example, synonyms of “difficult” are “hard” and “tricky." Watch out
for synonyms. You do not want to miss a detail because the author replaces a keyword with a synonym.
PASSAGE:
Many people believe Einstein was the most intelligent man to ever live. He created atomic power
and the theory of relativity. Others argue that Isaac Newton was the smartest. He created the laws of
motion and gravity. Another gifted man was Leonardo da Vinci. He was a great inventor and an artist.
There are even some geniuses alive today who could be the smartest man in history. For example,

from the passage and choose the answer which fits the details best.
PASSAGE:
There is finally some good news for the sports teams of Sun Valley Middle School. It has been
decided that a new football field will be built on school property. After the old field was ruined in an
unusual storm last March, the students have not had a place to play football or soccer.
Construction will begin on June 21, after summer break starts. The builders hope they will be
finished before school starts again in September. Over the summer, the field will be closed, so students
have to play sports on the elementary school’s field next door. We asked students how they felt about
the situation. One student said, “I am angry about having to play at the elementary school, but having a
new field will be great.”

The Civil War happened just as the art of photography was
growing. Many people believe that photography had a big effect on
the war. People were able to see images of their president, Abraham
Lincoln. They were also able to have photographs of their sons,
fathers, brothers, and husbands who fought or died in the war.
Not only that, but many photographs of battlefields were
shown in galleries in New York and Washington D.C. These photographs made people understand just
how terrible the war was.
Army generals also used photographers as part of their staff. They sent photographers to take
pictures of enemy areas and bases. They took pictures of roads, railroads, and bridges so that they
could have information about what everything looked like. They wanted to have information so that they
could win the war. The war ended in 1865, but we still have the pictures. The photos from the battles of
Antietam and Gettysburg are particularly sad. Even today, they make us remember the horrors of war.

Dear Class,

I’m writing to you because the try-outs for the school talent show are tomorrow. I forgot to mention it in
class today. If you want to sing, dance, act, play an instrument, or do anything else in the talent show, then

before 7:00 P.M. Once you’ve done your performance, you’re free to go home. The directors will post the list
of who will be in the talent show sometime next week.
Lastly, don’t worry about a ride home. There will be a late bus staying until the try-outs are finished. It will
