Access and install software updates

LEARNING OBJECTIVE/S:

After reading this information sheet, you must be able to:

1. Identify how access and install software updates.

2. Identify the procedures on how to install software/windows
update.

Install Windows Updates without Internet Connection Using

Portable Update

Installing Windows Updates requires an active internet

connection to download the available updates onto your computer. If
your computer isn’t connected to the internet it cannot be updated.
But we all know that in order to keep our computers working properly
we need to have them stay updated. What are the options for those
that don’t have access to the Internet but still need to stay with the
latest update?

1. Portable Update is a portable free tool that lets you store update
installation files onto a portable USB devices and apply them to
other Windows computers without the necessity of to be connected
to the network.

It works with almost all Windows systems, both desktop, and

server operating systems, from Windows 2000 all the way to
Windows 8. Both 32-bit and 64-bit editions are supported.

How does it work?

To update a computer that doesn’t have an internet connection,

Portable Update uses an external cache that stores all necessary
updates. The cache can be on any USB external devices, such as
external hard drive or flash drive. The same updates stored in the
cache can be applied to all other computers later on.

To start

1. Download Portable Update and run it on a computer that has

access to the Internet first. You will need to click
the Start button on the main window to download the
necessary components to the device.

 2. Once it’s done, it brings up a tab-based window for downloading
updates to the cache or applying the updates from the cache to
the computer.

3. Go to the Search tab first and click Start button at the top
right corner to search the updates that have been installed on a
local computer.

4. Then, go to the Download tab to select the updates to download

them to the cache for future use.

 5. Once the download is done, you can find the Cache folder on
the Portable Update folder that contains all the update
installation files.

 6. The History tab lists the updates that have been installed on
the local system by both Windows Update service and Portable
Update tool.

To install updates on other computers

1. Copy the whole Portable Update folder and save them onto an
external USB device, and run it again once it’s plugged into
other computers.
2. Go to Install tab and select the available updates from the list
to install them.

How to keep your Windows computer up-to-date

Microsoft Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you

keep your computer up-to-date. Microsoft Update includes updates
from Windows Update and from Office Update, in addition to updates
for other Microsoft products and for third-party device drivers.

Use Microsoft Update to install updates for your computer’s operating

system, software, and hardware.

New content is added to the site regularly so that you can obtain
recent updates and fixes to help protect your computer and to keep it
running smoothly. To use the Microsoft Update site to install all
critical updates for your computer, follow these steps:
1. Connect to the Internet, and then start Windows Internet
Explorer.

 2. On the Tools menu, click Windows Update.
3. If Microsoft Update is not installed, click Microsoft Update.
Otherwise, go to step 7.
4. On the Try Microsoft Update today Web page, click Start Now,
and then click Continue on the Review the license
agreement Web page.
5. In the Security Warning dialog box, click Install to install
Microsoft Update.
6. On the Welcome to Microsoft update Web page, click Check for
Updates
7. On the Keep your computer up to date Web page,
click Express to install high priority updates.
8. On the Review and Install Updates Web page, click Install
Updates, and then follow the instructions on the screen to
complete the installation.
9. After you install the high priority updates, you can repeat these
steps to install other updates. To do this, click Custom on
the Keep your computer up to date Web page. Then, you can
select updates from the sections that are listed on the navigation
pane.

Automatic Updates feature

You can also use the Automatic Updates feature to install updates. By
using Automatic Updates, you do not have to visit the Microsoft
Update Web site to scan for updates. Instead, Windows automatically
delivers them to your computer.

1. Automatic Updates recognizes when you are online, and searches

for updates from the Windows Update Web site.

2. An icon appears in the notification area at the far right of the
taskbar every time that new updates are available.
3. You can specify how and when you want Windows to update your
computer. For example, you can configure Windows to
automatically download and to install updates on a schedule that
you specify.
4. Or you can have Windows notify you when it finds updates that
are available for your computer, and then download the updates
in the background.
5. This enables you to continue to work uninterrupted. After the
download is completed, an icon appears in the notification area
with a message that the updates are ready to be installed.
6. When you click the icon or the message, you can install the new
updates in a few steps.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE/S:
To ensure safe computer network operations. Allotted time of 30
minutes. Cmd is used, ping command should show computer IP and
name, and network reply command should be displayed (IP- internet
protocol, bytes, TTL-time to live, ms-milliseconds).

STEPS/PROCEDURE:

1. Prepare your Workplace

a. Make sure that you have the necessary Materials/Peripherals

b. Make sure that the workplace is clean and dry.
c. Computer system and networks are checked/ tested to ensure
safe operations.

2. Start
a. OHS standards and 5S principles are followed according to
enterprise policies.
b. Press start window key, on the search program and files type
“cmd” .
c. On the CMD window panel, type ping command to check
network connectivity.
d. Type the ping command to check network web/ website
connectivity.
e. Type the ping command to check the continuous connectivity of
the whole network performance.
f. Check if the ping rating is high or low (bytes, TTL-time to live,
ms-milliseconds).
g. Type the CMD command to exit the cmd application window.
