General of India for a period of three
months(July- September) or until further

• In 2017, K.K Venugopal was appointed as

the 15th AG of India. He succeeded Mukul
Rohatgi who was AG from 2014-2017. His
first term as AG ended in June 2020 and he
was reappointed for a term of one year. In June 2021, his term was again extended by one year until June
30, 2022.
• Article 76 of the constitution deals with the post of Attorney General of India. He/She is the highest law

• The Reserve Bank of India has granted

Mufin Finance Limited, a leading Non-Banking
Financial Company in-principal approval for the
issuance of semi-closed Prepaid Payment
Instruments
• Mufin Finance Ltd is a subsidiary of

Hindon Mercantile Limited, an NBFC.
• A semi-closed PPI licence enables digital

banks, fintech (financial technology) companies,
and major consumer-facing applications to
introduce features like digital payment solutions for lending.
• Mufin Finance is the fourth NBFC to get such a licence from the RBI, following Bajaj Finserv, Manapurram,
and Paul Merchants.
• PPIs are instruments that facilitate purchase of goods and services, including financial services,
remittances and fund transfers to family and friends against the value stored on such instruments.
• It can come in the form of digital wallets, smart cards, magnetic chips, Gift cards, payment wallets, smart
cards and vouchers. Debit cards, however, need an open PPI licence and are issued only to banks.
• Closed System PPIs: Cash cannot be withdrawn from this kind of PPIs. It facilitates the purchase of goods
and services from that entity only. E.g., gift cards.
• Semi-closed system PPIs: Cash cannot be withdrawn from these instruments, whether issued by banks or
non-banking institutions. E.g.,Banks – HDFC Bank’s PayZapp and State Bank of India’s (SBI) YONO App &
Non- Banks – Paytm and GPay.
• Open system PPIs: Cash can be withdrawn from this type of instrument. The most commonly used PPIs
are debit and credit cards.
• Semi -Open System PPIs :These are payment instruments that can be used to purchase goods and
services at any card-accepting merchant locations (Point of sale terminals).
• Mobile Prepaid Instruments : These are prepaid talk time instruments issued by mobile service
providers. This talk time value can also be used to purchase ‘value added service’ from the mobile service
provider or third-party service providers.

digitize last-mile cash collections by utilizing the
broad reach of its digital-led neighbourhoods
banking concept.

Central bank of China inked agreement with Bank for International

Settlements, for establishing a RMBLA
• The Bank for International Settlements

announced a Renminbi Liquidity
Arrangement which has been developed
with the People's Bank of China to provide
liquidity to central banks through a new
reserve pooling scheme.
• The RMBLA aims to provide liquidity

support and can be utilised by
participating central banks during future
periods of market volatility.
• Each participating central bank contributes a minimum of RMB 15 billion or US dollar equivalent, in RMB
or USD, placed with the BIS, creating a reserve pool.

Credit Card Issuances and Spends has reached all time high in
May 2022
• According to the Reserve Bank of India

data, Credit card spends has reached an all-time
high of Rs 1.14 trillion in May 2022, 7.8 % higher
than the Rs. 1.05 lakh crore spent in April 2022.
• Credit card spending increased by 118

percent year over year and by 8% month over
month, due to robust e-commerce spending,
high-value expenditure on travel, tourism, and
discretionary items.
• Additionally, 1.7 million new credit cards

were added to the banking system in May 2022, the most in 27 months and 23.2% more than in May
2021.
• With the additions made in May 2022, India’s overall card base has increased to 76.9 million,
demonstrating that the retail economy remains strong.
• According to Motilal Oswal, a financial services firm, there were 7.68 crore outstanding credit cards in
May 2022, up from 7.51 crore in April 2022. On a YoY basis, this was an increase of 23.3 % from the 6.23
crore credit cards used in May 2021.
• May 2022 saw the addition of 38,500 new cards from Housing Development Finance Corporation Limited
(HDFC) Bank, followed by 21,500 from Axis Bank, 21,200 from ICICI Bank, and 21,500 from SBI Card
(20,200).
• In May 2022, the HDFC Bank, the second-largest lender in India, held the highest number of credit cards
(1.72 crore), following the RBI’s lifting of the ban on the issuance of new credit cards in March 2022.
• At the end of May 2022, HDFC Bank was followed by the State Bank of India (SBI) (1.41 crore) and ICICI
Bank (1.33 crore).
• The biggest incremental growth in credit card spending was recorded by IndusInd Bank and Kotak
Mahindra Bank, at 17% and 15%, respectively. All other players experienced growth in the 4–9% range.
• American Express, on the other hand, experienced a 2% month-over-month fall.

Banks’ Gross NPA ratio decreased to a six-year low of 5.9%

• According to the Reserve Bank of India’s
most recent Financial Stability Report, in March
2022, banks’ gross non-performing asset ratio
decreased to a six-year low of 5.9 percent from
a high of 7.4 percent in March 2021.
• According to stress testing, the GNPA

ratio of commercial banks may go from 5.9% in
March 2022 to 5.3 percent by March 2023
• GNPA ratio might increase to 6.2 percent

and 8.3 percent, respectively, if the
macroeconomic situation deteriorates to a medium or severe stress scenario.
• However, under the severe stress scenario, public sector banks’ GNPA ratios could rise from 7.6 percent

2022’ released by Reserve Bank of India,
the share of current and savings accounts
(CASA) deposits of commercial banks has
increased to 44.8% as of March 2022
end, from 41.7% three years ago.
• They accounted for 60.9% and 55.6% of

incremental deposits during 2020-21 and
2021-22, respectively.
• The seven states of Maharashtra, National Capital Territory of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil
Nadu, West Bengal, and Gujarat together accounted for 63.3% of bank deposits in fiscal 2021-22.
• Bank deposit growth moderated to 10% in March 2022 as compared with 11.9% a year ago.
• Current, savings and term deposits increased by 10.9%, 13.3% and 7.9%, respectively, during 2021-22.
• Metropolitan branches of banks, which account for over half of total deposits, accounted for 51.5% in
incremental deposits in FY 2021-22. The same stood at 59.6% in the year-ago period.
• Female depositors accounted for 19.8% of total deposits in March 2022.

RBI revises norms on banknote authentication & sorting

• The Reserve Bank of India issued guidelines
directing banks to test their banknote sorting
machines on a quarterly basis.
• In value terms, the share of Rs 500 and Rs

India recorded all-time high exports of seafood in FY 2021-22
• According to the Ministry of commerce

and industry data, India recorded all-time
high exports worth USD 7.76 billion with
the volume of 13,69,264 MT of seafood
in FY 2021-22, despite the several
challenges in its major export markets
caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
• India shipped 13,69,264 metric tonnes of

seafood worth Rs 57,586.48 crore (USD
7.76 billion) FY 2021- 22, despite heavy
odds and the export improved in rupee terms by 31.71 per cent, in USD terms by 30.26 per cent and in
quantity terms by 19.12 per cent, during the FY 2021-22.
• Frozen shrimp remained the major export item in terms of quantity and value. Its shipments stood at USD
5.82 billion. The segment accounts for 75.11 per cent of the total earnings in Dollar value. The United
States is the largest market of frozen shrimp, followed by China.
• The United States continued to be the major importer of Indian seafood in value and volume terms with
an import worth USD 3,371.66 million, followed by China with an import of 2,66,989 MT worth USD
1,175.05 million.

of USD 500 million each to support India’s

GoI made 7 Amendments in Foreign Contribution Act Rules 2011

• The Government of India has made
seven key amendments to the existing Foreign
Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) Rules
2011, which will now be known as the Foreign
Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Rules,
2022, w.e.f. July 01, 2022.
• Amended FCRA will allow Indians to

receive up to Rs 10 lakh in a year from relatives
staying abroad without informing the
authorities. The earlier limit was Rs 1 lakh.
• The rules were amended by GoI in exercise of the powers conferred by section 48 of the Foreign
Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010
• The Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) was first enacted in 1976. It was amended in 2010 when
a series of new measures to regulate foreign donations were adopted.
• The Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), 2010, consolidates the laws governing the acceptance
and use of foreign contributions and foreign hospitality by specific individuals, associations, or
companies.
• It also forbids the acceptance and use of such resources for any activities that are harmful to the interests
of India.
• The FCRA covers all of India and is also applicable to Indian nationals living abroad.
• All associations, groups, and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that wish to accept foreign
donations must comply with the FCRA.
• All such NGOs are required to register with the FCRA. The registration is valid for five years and can be
renewed if all of the standards are met.
• It is prohibited for legislators, political party members, government employees, judges, and media people
to accept any foreign donations.

Ministry of Food Processing Industries with an outlay of Rs.10,000 crore for over a period of five years
from 2020-21 to 2024-25. It is currently being implemented in 35 States and Union Territories.
• Under the scheme, the submission process for the applicants to apply for the credit-linked subsidy is
done through the online portal –www.pmfme.mofpi.gov.in
• It is providing financial support of Rs. 40,000 for working capital and purchase of small tools for each
member of the Self Help Group engaged in food processing activities in India.
• Over 1 lakh SHG members are identified and the seed capital amount Rs. 203 Crores is provided to the

• All linear projects (roads, highways, etc), projects involving forest land up to 40 hectares and those that
have projected a use of forest land having a canopy density up to 0.7 — irrespective of their extent for
the purpose of survey — shall be examined in the Integrated Regional Office.
• The applicants for diverting forest land in a hilly or mountainous state with green cover covering more
than two-thirds of its geographical area, or in a state/UT with forest cover covering more than one-third
of its geographical area, will be able to take up compensatory afforestation in other states/UTs where the

NITI Aayog Launched Report on India’s Gig and Platform Economy

• It is a first-of-its-kind study that

presents comprehensive perspectives
and recommendations on the Indian
gig–platform economy.
• Gig Economy/Sector is a labour market in which instead of a traditional, in-office, full-time job with a
single company, gig workers work as short-term, temporary/freelance, or independent contractors for
one or a variety of employers.
• Gig workers can be broadly classified into platform and nonplatform-based workers. Platform workers
are those whose work is based on online software apps or digital platforms.
• While, non-platform gig workers are generally casual wage workers and own-account workers in the
conventional sectors, working part-time or full time.
• In 2020–21,7.7 million workers were engaged in the gig economy which constituted 2.6% of the non-
agricultural workforce or 1.5% of the total workforce in India.
• The gig workforce is expected to expand to 23.5 million workers by 2029–30 comprising 6.7% of the non-
agricultural workforce or 4.1% of the total livelihood in India.
• The Indian gig workforce is expected to expand to 23.5 million workers by 2029-30, a near 200 percent
jump from 7.7 million by 2020–21.
• Gig workers will form 4.1 percent of the total workforce in India by FY30, from 1.5 per cent FY21
• At present, about 47% of the gig work is in medium skilled jobs, about 22% in high skilled, and about 31%
in low skilled jobs.

points.
• In 2019-20, Rajasthan is followed by Punjab with 14 districts in Ati-uttam grade (scoring 71% to 80% in a
scale of 100).
• It is followed by Gujarat and Kerala with each having 13 districts in this category. However, the top
scoring district in this category is from Kerala (Kannur – 461).
• There are 12 states/ UTs which don’t have any districts the Ati-uttam and Uttam (scoring 61% to 70% in a
scale of 100) viz. Bihar, Goa, Jammu and Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram,

the top of the list of probable unicorns.
• The index provides a glimpse of the

Indian start-up ecosystem and ranks
Indian start-ups that were established in
the 2000s, worth at least USD 200 million (Rs. 1,500 crore), are not yet listed on a public exchange, and
are most likely to “go unicorn” within the next 2 -4 years. The deadline was May 31, 2022.
• India’s future unicorns are currently worth $ 49 billion, with an increase of 36 per cent as compared to
2021.
• According to data provided by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry(MoCI), India’s start-up ecosystem is
now home to more than 69,000 start-ups and is the 3rd largest in the world in terms of the number of
unicorns (as of 2nd May 2022).The United States (US) and China have the top 2 largest start-up
ecosystems.
• India gave birth to 20 unicorns worth a total USD 26 billion in the first half of 2022. In 2021, it witnessed a
record 44 start-ups becoming unicorns.

Asia Pacific Sustainability Index 2021

• According to the ‘Asia Pacific
Sustainability Index 2021’ released by Knight
Frank, an international property consultant
based in London, United Kingdom, four Indian
cities made it to the top 20 of the Asia Pacific
Sustainably Led Cities Index Ranking.
• Bengaluru, Karnataka, was ranked 14th

in the APAC region in the Gold standard
category. It topped among the Indian cities.
• The other 3 Indian cities, Delhi,

Hyderabad and Mumbai came in 17th, 18th, and 20th, respectively, attaining the Silver standard
category.
• The top five green-rated cities in the APAC region are Singapore, Sydney (Australia), Wellington (New
Zealand), Perth (Australia), and Melbourne (Australia). These five cities earned the Platinum category, the
highest category of the index.
• The APAC Sustainably-led Cities Index includes 36 cities ranked according to urbanisation pressure,
climate risk, carbon emissions, and government initiatives.
• The index standard refers to the willingness of the cities in accepting and adapting to Environmental,
Social and Governance (ESG)metrics.
• Platinum signifies that the city is well advanced and extremely open to accepting and adapting to ESG
metrics from all stakeholders to a high degree.
• Gold implies that the city is slightly advanced and somewhat open to accepting and adapting to ESG

• The other cities in the index are Chennai, Jaipur and Ahmedabad
• India is among the top-20 startup ecosystems globally and has been ranked 19th in the country- wise

the government sponsored ‘Kashi Yatra’

initiated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
• On this portal, the training videos and

quizzes are available in 12 Indian languages,

• Dak Karmayogi portal aims to enhance the competencies of about 4 lakh Gramin Dak Sevaks and
department employees by enabling the trainees to access the uniform standardized training content
online and in blending campus mode to enable them to effectively deliver several G2C services for
enhanced customer satisfaction.
• The department of posts has been providing important training to its employees through various postal
training centers, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai National postal Academy (RAKNPA), and the Central training
institute.
• To acknowledge the good performance of employees and to motivate them to improve their good work
the department of posts gave the Meghdoot awards in eight different categories.
• Meghdoot award was introduced in the year 1984 and it is the highest award of the departmental post at
the National level for overall performance and excellence. The awardees are facilitated with a medallion,
certificate, and a cash prize of rupees 21000.
