MINISTER'S LETTER

I began my letter for last year’s Annual Report, ‘2020 – what a year.’ I am tempted to begin this year’s in
the same way.

The various reports you will read inside speak once more of the resilience of all at St Anne’s. Despite
lockdowns, masks, hand-sanitising and social distancing, folk have continued to find a way to support one
another, make the best of things and, (to pinch a hackneyed phrase), ‘Keep Calm and Carry On.’

The Report from the Session Clerks highlights some of the challenges we have faced and overcome; but
also alludes to significant changes on the horizon. You will know by now that the Church of Scotland faces
a difficult future, and we are not isolated from all that that entails. As you read of the activities which are
recorded in this report, please remember, too, all those who are now engaged in very important
discussions on your behalf, and on behalf of the future of St Anne’s – a future we all have an interest in.

The Psalmist wrote:

“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labour in vain. Unless the Lord guards the city, the
guard keeps watch in vain.” (Psalm 127:1-2)

As you read of our activities, many of them truncated for a second year, bear in mind that nothing we do
has real and lasting value if we forget what should lie at the heart of it: a desire to ‘Love God, and serve his
people; and serve God, and love his people.’ Take heart from all that has been achieved; give thanks to
God; then let us go on and do more in His name!

Rev Jamie Griggs

Minister

KIRK SESSION

2021 has been a very busy, if somewhat challenging, year. It began with a Tier 4 strict lockdown which meant
we were back to recorded services only. This lasted till the end of March. Session Meetings, and all other
meetings were still being conducted via Zoom. The Lenten Studies were also held online over 6 weeks.
In June there was great joy when we were able to replace the pew cushions, then, with permission for the
congregation to sing (behind masks of course), the hymn books were reinstated. A small choir of six people
were also able to sing as a group behind screens. Later we were able to reduce the two-metre distancing
rule to one metre.

In July we started to live stream the Sunday Service with our new camera system. Thanks to the ‘tech team‘
for all their work in getting this off the ground.
With the halls opening to bookings again, some of our groups and a few classes restarted in September, with
others following later, or deciding to wait until the New Year.
In October we were at last able to hold in-person Session Meetings. This lasted for two meetings before
another tightening of the rules came into operation. In November we held our first social event since March
2020 with a Family Beetle Drive.

The Plans for the re-structuring of all Church of Scotland Parishes, and of the churches within each Parish, is
a major project, and a major headache, for all concerned. Clusters were set and then regrouped into larger
clusters, causing some upset. This is an ongoing concern with seemingly impossible deadlines to meet. At
this stage it is not certain which Church (or Churches) St Anne’s will form a union with, but one thing is
certain, things will change. There will be major re-structuring in the Church of Scotland which will affect
everyone.

We ended 2021 with another lockdown which once again affected the planned Christmas services. Perhaps
next year we will be able to celebrate Christmas as we have done in the past.

Sadly, in April 2021/January 2022 we lost two stalwart members of our Kirk Session. Bill Coats was our Senior
Elder having been ordained into Eldership in 1963. We remember with respect Derek Doyle who was the
driving force behind the Twinning Partnership, the FAN Club, and the Carers Group. We also said goodbye
to Graham and Susan Nimmo who have moved to Peebles. All four members will be greatly missed by the
Kirk Session.

Thanks are due to our Administrative Teams for keeping the Church business ticking over, and to all groups
for managing to keep in touch with their members and in keeping abreast of the ever-changing rules. We
are indebted to Jamie for his continued dedication and commitment to St Anne’s.
There is no doubt that 2022 will prove to be another challenging year, perhaps in a different way, with all
the proposed changes in the pipeline.

During 2021, the Church and buildings were closed for significant periods. The Fabric Team put in place all
necessary procedures to ensure that the fabric was maintained and undertook regular checks to ensure the
buildings were safe. Much of our normal activity has been reduced or curtailed, but regular and routine
maintenance continued: the gardens have been looked after; Pat tests and EICR tests undertaken, Life
systems tested and maintained; sanctuary roof and rainwater goods have been repaired and cleared by a
specialist aerial access company; sound system has been replaced and at the same time significantly
upgraded. We were also part of the church defib project and have an external mounted defibrillator.

The Manse continues to be managed and maintained by Umega. In 2021 the tenants for the last 5 years
returned home to the Netherlands and a significant internal upgrade was undertaken with new carpets laid
throughout, woodwork repainted, and decoration refreshed, in addition to regular maintenance. A new
tenancy commenced in February 2022.

As restrictions have reduced, we have seen a return to our buildings being used as originally intended.

Report to Kirk Session

January and June

We have managed a few face-to-face visits in the less restricted parts of the year but have depended mostly
on technology to keep in touch with the congregation.

We delivered Easter and Christmas cards to everyone.

Socially, we had a Beetle drive in November which was enjoyed by people of all ages.

The flowers in St Anne’s are always beautifully displayed but the Flower team put on a spectacular show at
Christmas which was much appreciated.

It has been good to be able to meet for coffee again after the service and to chat to friends.
Thank you to the group leaders, visiting elders, pastoral carers, and volunteer drivers for helping to keep us
all connected in these difficult times.

Report to Session
January and September

With the Covid restrictions easing during 2021, we were able to deliver Easter Cards to the Parish. With many
of our usual volunteers no longer able to deliver cards, and with several people already delivering to several
areas, we needed to do something about this situation. We are extremely grateful to all volunteers who so
faithfully delivered cards and leaflets over many years. It was decided that in future Elders would deliver
cards to members in their districts. Notices would be put into the Corstorphine Grapevine and a greeting
from St Anne’s would be put in at Christmas and Easter with details of the various services.

In October we were delighted to be able to cook and serve a meal for 30 homeless people on behalf of the
Bethany Trust. The meal was cooked in St Anne’s, and transported to the Hub Hotel at Haymarket where
we served Pasta Bolognese and Mags’ special trifle. The meal was well received, and thanks are due to the
excellent team of volunteers, and to members of the congregation who gave so generously to cover the cost.

The monthly collection of goods for the West Edinburgh Food Bank had to be suspended during lockdown.
However, we made a special collection for two weeks in December where members were encouraged to
include some Christmas treats with their donation. The Food Bank were delighted to receive these extra
goodies that would be handed out to clients in the run up to Christmas. Thank you to everyone in the
congregation and to Murrayside Care Home for generously giving food and financial donations.

The FAN Club was not able to meet in 2021, but the members were kept up to date by Evelyn Conner with
encouraging letters and cards. The Caring&Sharing group continued to keep in touch by zooming each Friday
morning until they were able to re-open at last with in-person café style meetings in September. The
moment that restrictions are eased further, and permission is given, the FAN Club will also re-start.

During the year the team had to say goodbye to Susan Nimmo as she and her husband moved to live in
Peebles. Susan has been a very hard-working member of the team. She delivered over two hundred cards or
leaflets, up to three times a year, attended all the committee meetings (even when working full time) and
cooked and served the Bethany meal twice with the team. We will miss her cheerful personality and wise
councel, and we wish her a very happy time in her new life in Peebles.

We would like to end this report with a huge thank you to the team for all the work they have done in a very
difficult year. Thank you to the Minister for his encouragement and to the office for their continued support.

Report to Kirk Session

June & November
As the pandemic affected our finances for a second year, I am pleased to report that we have come through
the maelstrom in as good a position at the end of the year as we were at the start. That is not saying too
much but, given the strictures on attending worship, we were able to (just) meet our costs with our income.

Our donations principally from freewill offerings and standing orders remained constant with tax recoveries
similarly holding firm. This is despite the sanctuary being forcibly closed for part of the year and so we pay
tribute to the majority of members who kept their standing orders going or who filled their envelopes for
delivery at a later date. However, with the buildings remaining closed there were fewer opportunities to let
our halls with a consequent reduction in lettings from the previous subdued year.

Our costs, on the other hand, benefitted from the enforced closure. We received a reduction in our Ministries
and Mission contribution to the National Church. Similarly, the Presbytery dues were also reduced. These
two reductions totalled around £10,000, without which the picture would have been far bleaker. Most of
the other costs were in line with the previous years. With the buildings closed, there were opportunities to
reduce cleaning, heating, maintenance, and general operating costs. On the other hand, essential repairs
were undertaken which took advantage of the closure to reduce disruption.

We finish with a repeat of the plea we made in the January magazine. We are grateful for the support of the
members who give by standing order or FWO envelopes, but we ask you to review the amount given which
may have been set a few years ago. We appreciate that for many people the financial environment is
becoming more challenging, but your contribution and any increase is greatly appreciated.

Once again, the treasurers thank the members of the Finance team for their support.

The Team
There were no changes to the team in 2021.
Educate and inform
The coronavirus pandemic has resulted in reduced publication of the Church magazine and newsletters with
a knock-on effect to our submission of articles. One article, relating to COP26 held in Glasgow, was published
in the December Church Magazine.
Environmental Issues - Eco Church
Iain Murray has continued to forward on communications from Eco-Church to the rest of the team.
Fair Trade
No Fair-Trade stalls or other Fair-Trade activities were run by the WIT in 2021.
Twinning
During 2021, with the Coronavirus Pandemic continuing, we have been in sporadic communication with St
Andrews, updating and encouraging each other, mainly on the progress of the pandemic.
Christian Aid
Christian Aid week, as in previous years, was in May. Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic lockdown, normal
fundraising efforts for Christian Aid did not take place. A message from Christian Aid stated that...The
coronavirus crisis means it is more important than ever that we come together as a community to worship,
share fun and fellowship, and support our sisters and brothers living in poverty. Through their website
Christian Aid invited supporters to donate through their e-envelope fundraising initiative.

Report to Kirk Session

January and September

Following the ‘hiatus’ of 2020-2021, 2021-2022 continued to present some challenges for the Worship Team.
Restrictions on worship meant we had to find ‘new ways’ of ‘doing old things’, not least in terms of singing.
We were all delighted once the Choir could return to sing ‘in person’ (albeit behind screens/masks); all were
relieved once the screens could go; more so (for the Choir) once masks could go; and we wait with ‘bated
breath’ for permission for the congregation to finally ‘un-mask’.

We have continued to provide as full a diet of worship as the circumstances have allowed. We were very
disappointed that our Christmas arrangements were upset by tightened restrictions, not least with the late
cancelling of our Service of Lessons & Carols. Our Communion services continue to be celebrated without
the distribution of the elements: we hope that by Easter 2022 this may change.

Again, I record my sincere thanks to David Stewart (Organist & Choir Master); to the ‘Tech Team’, now
growing under the leadership of Craig Robertson and John Lyall; to our readers and weekly Duty Teams; to
our ‘Flower Team’, under the leadership of Claire Grant. Last year I ended my report saying, ‘The future will
continue to bring new opportunities for worship and outreach, as we move forward.’: and so it does, and
will.

Due to the ongoing pandemic restrictions, the Education Team members held their scheduled meetings on
Zoom.
Following the success of cards, activity packs and chocolate treats in 2020, the Education Team organised
and distributed cards, activity packs and selection boxes for the Sunday Club members at Easter and
Christmas 2021. Although Lenten and Advent bible studies were proposed for 2021, the ongoing restrictions,
the arrival of a new Covid-19 variant and the pressures of providing online and recorded services prevented
the events taking place as normal, although the Lenten Studies did take place on Zoom. The Advent Sweet-
making session was planned for Saturday 18th December, but since rising case numbers amongst the school
community were a cause for concern during the weeks before Christmas, the decision was taken to postpone
the Sweet- making activity until Spring/ Summer 2022.

The Sunday Club Team and the Education Team held a joint meeting in April 2021 to discuss ideas for a “new
look” Sunday Club, as the current members have not been able to meet since March 2020. Plans are now in
place for a monthly get-together on the first Sunday of the month, with a rota of helpers to look after the
children. There are insufficient volunteers at the moment to supervise a weekly get-together for the Sunday
Club members, and additional volunteers would be welcome to join the Sunday Club team. It is hoped that
other activities for children and young people will be provided co-operatively with neighbouring churches
throughout the year.

Safeguarding, which is part of the Education Team remit, has been made a standing item on the Session
meeting agenda. As a result of deliverances from the General Assembly, refresher Safeguarding training for
Kirk Session members, volunteers and those carrying out regulated work with children and vulnerable adults
is now mandatory every five years, with mandatory training for co-ordinators every three years. Training
dates are circulated to session members and volunteers when they are supplied by Edinburgh Presbytery,
and several Session members and volunteers have completed their refresher training.

We are very much looking forward to resuming Sunday Club get-togethers on the 1st Sunday of the month,
to coincide with the monthly family service, and the return of the Lenten Bible Study. We would also like to
thank the Education Team and Sunday Club Team members and volunteers, past and present, for their help
and support in providing the programme of events and activities for the children, young people and families
at St Anne’s. If you would be interested in joining the Sunday Club volunteer rota, please contact Alison
Yelland, Mags Menzies or Maxine Grant for further details.

THE SUNDAY CLUB

Due to the ongoing fluctuating Covid crisis in schools and need of more adult support, we are unable to run
Sunday Club on a weekly basis. Therefore, the Education Team has been working hard to put in place a new
provision for Sunday Club. With the support from parents, carers, and the congregation we have managed
to get a small team together to run Sunday Club on a monthly basis, and the hope is that with more
volunteers, Sunday Club will once again be able to be offered on a weekly basis in the future.

The first meeting of the all-new Sunday Club was on Sunday 6th March where the children who joined us sat
with their carers for the beginning of the service and then took part in the minister’s address. The children
brought much delight to the congregation. After the children’s hymn they left to have refreshments and
take part in games and stories with two Sunday Club volunteers. All the children were delighted to be back.

Representative Elder: Noël Proven

This year to celebrate Christmas, the Education Team and Sunday Club sent out Christmas cards and selection
boxes to all the members of Sunday Club who had been regular attendees at Sunday Club before Covid.

Thank you to all the Sunday Club for being awesome - it was so lovely to see so many of you on Sunday, 6th
March. Thank you to the Education Committee for all your support of the Sunday Club over this last year.
And thank you to all our supporters for your kind words and help trying to get everything back to normal.
Thank you to Diana Ardelean, Margaret Dawson, Margaret Grant, Louise McAndie, Mike MacMahon,

THE CRÈCHE

The creche rota has not happened through 2021, as the pandemic continued.
There have been ongoing discussions about what will be offered as the church building re-opens and, going
forward, there will be a volunteer rota to look after children on the first Sunday of the month, when a Family
service will take place.
Anyone who would like to be part of this rota, will be very welcome.

The beginning of 2021 saw The Guild in the same position as at the end 2020, with no meetings allowed on
church premises and no face-to-face meetings. Indeed, the country was in another lockdown nationally after
a Christmas of altered plans. The second half of our programme from January to March 2021 was therefore
cancelled and we continued to keep in touch with each other by phone, letters, and email. The Big Sing and
the Annual Gathering were both held virtually, and the Guild Office sent out a weekly edition of national
news, the Guild notice board at St Anne’s featuring in it one week. St Anne’s Guild Mothers were again
making sure to be in contact with their groups of members and alerting the committee to those who needed
an extra boost. This meant that we were able to send cards of sympathy, encouragement, and support and,
when possible, a bunch of flowers too, thanks to Claire Grant. Later in the year, once visits were allowed
again, we were able to deliver an Easter message along with a basket of chocolate eggs to all members and
just before Christmas we took a Christmas card and little gift to those who are no longer able to attend our
Tuesday meetings.

In September, after nearly eighteen months and having worked hard to ensure that we could keep everyone
safe, we started our fortnightly meetings again. To accommodate those who did not want to venture out in
the evenings, we decided to experiment this year with one afternoon meeting a month at 2pm and one
evening meeting a month at 7pm. Sitting at well- spaced tables of 4, keeping movement around the well-
ventilated hall to a minimum, wearing masks, having refreshments served at the table, and trying to keep a
one metre distance from each other at all times, we enjoyed coffee and much chat. Thanks go to Barbara
Mallen and her team for keeping our caffeine levels high. Our syllabus was as varied as we could make it and
included hearing about how the six national projects were faring, Victoria and Albert’s Love Affair with
Scotland, Hearing Dogs, poetry and stories from Tom Gordon and Christmas Crafts from Rosie Carmichael.
We were just getting used to filling in the Test and Protect forms and sanitising our hands carefully as we
came into meetings when the Omicron variant of Covid 19 made itself felt and we had to cancel all our plans
for the Christmas lunch at the very last minute. The end of 2021 saw us all hoping, yet again, that it would
not be too long before meetings could resume.

It has obviously been much more difficult to support our ongoing projects during this past year, but work
has still been going on. We were able to send money to Cunningham House; people have been knitting hats
for the Seafarers Mission and squares to make up into blankets, saving milk tops and cutting round stamps.

16
My grateful thanks go to the hard-working committee, without whom the Guild could not function, to the
meeting leaders’ team who have organised and taken meetings, often at short notice, to all those who have
been delivering, providing flowers, setting up the hall for meetings, clearing up afterwards, phoning,
emailing, and assisting with printing and IT. Finally, I would like to thank those who have been willing to take
time to chat, boosting anyone in need of encouragement, and who have generally lent their help and support
in any way.

Let us “Look Forward in Faith” and trust that the way ahead may be easier than it has been of late.

It has been a real pleasure to welcome 7 new members this year. We are always keen to welcome new
people, so if you would like to join us, please get in touch.

The Friends and Neighbours Club has been a great success since it was started in 2010.

The FAN Club has sadly had another year without being able to meet up. Like last year, the committee have
done their best to keep in touch with the members, sending letters, Easter, Christmas, and Birthday Cards.
We have also kept in touch by telephone.

It was decided to have a lunch in December with the committee doing the catering - members signed up
immediately, but again this event had to be cancelled.

Our wish for 2022 is that we can again get back to normal and enjoy the fellowship that the members miss
so much.

Throughout 2021, Caring&Sharing@St Anne’s managed to maintain contact with supporters by means of an
online Zoom version of our popular Friday morning café.

It was well attended and continued to provide a welcome social event during the period of restrictions. In
September, when restrictions eased, we were able to resume our Friday café, socially distanced, in person,
in the Belgrave Room. The café proved to be very popular and was well attended, providing some much-
needed social contact.

We look forward to providing a fuller programme in 2022, alternating our Friday morning meetings with
invited speakers and our continuing café-style offering.

MUSIC IN ST ANNE'S

The Choir meets from September to June on Thursdays from 7.30pm to 9pm in the Belgrave Room and on
Sundays at 10.15am before Morning Worship. Singers in all parts always welcome.
Organist & Choirmaster David Stewart davidstewart@blueyonder.co.uk 0131 441 3362

The Choir leads the praise and sings Introits and Anthems each week throughout the session. It presently
comprises 6 sopranos, 3 altos, 0 tenors and 4 basses.
After the first Sunday of January 2021, church buildings were again closed for worship due to the ever-
lengthening Covid 19 pandemic. Worship continued to be provided online via services recorded in the
church. Churches were permitted to reopen on 28 March, but the regulations did not allow singing. While
I was glad to be able to play hymns and voluntaries for the congregation now physically present, it was still
strange to play hymns without singing. So the 2020-21 Choir Session passed without the Choir able to
practice or contribute to worship.
The position changed slightly from 20 June for choirs only, when six members of the choir were permitted
to sing at 2 metres physical distance behind plastic screens. We also enjoyed 2 cello voluntaries from Dr Lisa
McCormick. Introits began in September at the beginning of the 2021-22 Session, then in October choirs
were allowed to resume practices and sing at one metre physical distancing, so anthems also recommenced.
We were delighted to welcome 3 new members to the choir. We had just practiced our Lessons and Carols
Service when the position changed once again due to the Omicron variant, and choir singing was suspended
from mid-December. So ended 2021: but at least we have a Lessons and Carols Service ready for 2022!
My thanks to the Choir for responding flexibly to the ever-changing rules and for their enthusiastic return
when singing was permitted.

THE BOOK GROUP

Once again, we had to adjust to the ongoing pandemic but always managed to continue either by email, outside in a
garden or eventually, as the year drew to a close, we finally found refuge indoors, socially distanced of course. The
numbers have remained steady, and we even welcomed three new members in the second half of the year.

As always, a wide variety of books were tackled and this year, we tried to include more factual material, in the form
of “Reasons to Stay Alive” by Matt Haig. It was based on his own experiences of living with depression and anxiety
disorder so very much in line with current discussion in the media but also a recurring issue attributed to the problems
of lockdown. “Cilka‘s Journey “ by Heather Morris and “War Doctor “ by David Nott were also books describing actual
circumstances.

Of course, the greater number of books read were fictional including “Winter Garden” by Kristen Hannah, a captivating
story that spans sixty-five years and moves from the Siege of Leningrad to modern day Alaska and “Sea of Memories”
by Fiona Valpy a poignant love story beautifully written, set partially among the sand dunes and Atlantic coastal
beaches of the Île de Ré but also in Paris and Scotland. “One Last Dram before Midnight” by Denzil Meyrick, a Scottish
bestselling novelist who previously served as a police officer, is a cheerful collection of short stories about his character
DCI Daley - full of humour, nostalgia and told in a Scots dialect. These were just three of the fictional books read and
enjoyed.

As we return to a more normal way of living, I look forward to being able to get back to a syllabus with dates we can
rely on and to a regular meeting place once more.

SUNDAY COFFEE

After an absence of some eighteen months, the familiar sounds of conversation and laughter echoed around
the Kaimes Hall with the resumption of Sunday Coffee in September 2021.

The Team has been reinstated under the guidance of Anne Ritchie, Lyn Chalmers, Ellison Bishop and Anne
Morison. It is hoped to provide continuity every Sunday by augmenting each team with two more permanent
members. At present we have enlisted the help of Frances Tennant, Muriel Gibson, Ethel Thomson, Margaret
Neil, Christine Shuttleworth and Eleanor Kerse but we do need a few more people willing to commit to
helping on one Sunday per month. Please contact Lyn Chalmers if you would like to join the teams.

Donations raised during 2021 amounted to £278 and we thank everyone for their encouragement and
support. We look forward to seeing you in the Kaimes Hall on Sunday morning after the Service.

CHRISTIAN AID
Many if not all of us will have grown up learning of and hearing about the valuable work done by Christian
Aid.
Christian Aid exists to create a world where everyone can live a full life, free from poverty.
The challenges that we have all faced over the last 2 years, as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, have
had a major impact on the way we lead and organise our lives.
Imagine then how much more difficult that must make coping with life in an environment where
communities and entire nations are suffering from drought, poverty, illness, and disease.
This makes the ongoing work of Christian Aid even more important than ever, and we must remember them
in our thoughts and in our prayers, but also in our giving.
We have been accustomed to being invited to contribute to Christian Aid during what became recognised as
Christian Aid week in May of each year. The pandemic has not allowed us to do that during 2020 or 2021,
and we are now encouraged to support Christian Aid through giving on-line. You can do so at any time of the
year, and as often as you feel able to help.
In the last year we do know that 1.7million people in need have been reached by Christian Aid humanitarian
programmes, and despite the pandemic, an incredible number of volunteers have continued to give of their
time and talents to support the work of Christian Aid.
Here in St Anne’s, we can do our part to help the valuable work that Christian Aid continues to do throughout
the world.
If you would like to give to the Christian Aid Global Appeal, you can do so on-line. There are a number of
ways in which you can give, that can help you include Christian Aid in your regular outgoings. You can find

Anne Ramage, Susan Nimmo and Mary Black are no longer able to be part of the team. We would like to
thank them so much for all their work – Anne over many years and Susan and Mary perhaps not so many –
but all very much appreciated.
It took until Harvest Thanksgiving for the church flowers to get back to normal with fresh flowers on the
Communion Table each week. As a team, we all felt a bit out of practice and slightly daunted at first, but it
soon came back, and it is lovely to have flowers to distribute to the congregation every week. Our thanks go
to all members of the congregation who so generously give to the flower fund and to the Sunday Coffee
group who support us when funds are low.

JACK AND JILL CLUB

Jack and Jill Club @ St Anne’s Wednesday mornings 9.30 – 11.30 following school term times

Having ground to halt along with everything else in March 2020, Jack and Jill burst back into life in 2021.
After putting everything through the wash, contacting previous members and spreading the word, doors
reopened on 24th November, and the Jack and Jill Club has been attracting increasing numbers as time has
passed.
We had 3 “normal weeks” then a Christmas party – unfortunately our professional entertainment had to
cancel because of Covid, but we muddled through, with the event culminating in a visit from that special
man in red….Santa!

21
We now have 22 families on the register, and it is a joy to see everyone, young and old, enjoying themselves.
There is a wide selection of toys and some crafts on offer, and Mums, Dads and other carers can have a cup
of tea or coffee and sweet treat – everyone taking turns to keep an eye on the children. Individual snacks
are now brought by the parents for their own child/ren to avoid too much sharing in this coronavirus
environment. The morning finishes with a tidy up and a sing song – thankfully not led by me, as I truly cannot
sing!
Prior to the 2020 closure, the club had been led by Frances Tennant, and we owe a great deal of thanks to
her, for her devotion to the club for 18 years.
Helping to run Jack and Jill back in the 80’s and 90’s when my children used to attend, I never thought I would
be back. But never say never, and I am very happy to be back in such a happy place.

THE TUESDAY EVENING SUMMER WALKING GROUP

Although we were affected by Covid the group did manage a few walks last summer when rules permitted,
and the weather was kind. We had walks to Portobello prom, the grounds of the Royal Bank at Gogar, the
poets walk at the Gyle, Corstorphine Hill, East Craigs loop and a lovely walk at Roseburn.
We hope to have a full syllabus this year. If you would like to join us, we meet on Tuesday evenings from
May to August. We will put an intimation in the Church magazine, or you can contact me on 0131 317 1335.

ST ANNE’S GIRLGUIDING UNITS

Girlguiding: 183rd St Anne’s Units- Annual Report 2021

It goes without saying that 2021 was a very different year for the Girlguiding Units at St Annes, as the Leader
teams continued to meet the challenges of keeping units operating during the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic
and the restrictions around meeting as a group.
The use of technology allowed weekly meetings to continue over Zoom, and the leader teams became very
good at adapting activities to do them online and did weekly “equipment and instruction” drops, so that the
girls would have everything they needed to take part in the online meetings at home. Things became very
much easier in May, when we were allowed to meet out of doors in the Church grounds, and we became
very aware of risk assessments, provisions of sanitisers and wipes, social distancing, and the weather
forecast!

Numbers have seen a dip over the year, but now that we are back to face-to-face meetings, the Rainbows
are full, with a waiting list, and the Friday Brownies numbers are very healthy. The Guides are operating with
smaller numbers than we’ve been used to, due to several of our older members reaching the upper age limit,
others moving to new houses in other parts of the city, and others leaving due to increased pressure of
schoolwork and the demands of extra-curricular activities. The drop in numbers is also happening at a
national level, and it is hoped that once restrictions are fully eased, things will pick up again - although there
has been a significant drop in Leader numbers over the course of the pandemic too.
Following Lynsey McDiarmid’s departure to take over the 191 st Brownies at St Thomas and begin her new
role as Maybury District Commissioner, the Wednesday Brownie Unit was suspended at the end of June. We
thank Lynsey and her team for holding the fort on Wednesday evenings and we wish her well in her new
roles.

183rd A Rainbows
We started face to face meetings back in May, and enjoyed being back together and out of doors, before
returning to indoor meetings in September.

The girls have worked extremely hard, and 2 of the Rainbows have now gained all 12 Interest Badges.
Girlguiding has now started to offer Rainbows to 4 -7-year-olds, so from October the 183A welcomed its first
4-year-olds. It has been a bit of a challenge, but the girls are settling in well and growing in confidence every
week.

In September the Rainbows took part in a sponsored cycle for Steps of Hope and Oaklands School, in memory
of Ellen Reid, who was a Unit Helper with us. The Rainbows raised £300 and were reluctant to stop cycling
around the Forestry Commission! They earned medals from Jessie, Ellen’s cousin for their efforts too.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us.

Dyanne Mudie

At the end of the year, Dyanne was nominated as one of Girlguiding Edinburgh’s ten Division “Heroes” for
her work with the Rainbows over the pandemic. Congratulations to Dyanne on her nomination and to all the
Leader teams who kept things going.

23
183rd Brownies
The 183rd Brownies remained full and with a waiting list throughout 2021, despite having the challenges of
meeting online and outdoors for most of the year, due to Covid.

We were able to support two volunteers for Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award work, and they will continue
to work with the Brownie in 2022. Online we participated in scavenger hunts, crafts and had a Zumba
instructor deliver a session online too. Once outdoors we were involved in wide games, planting, being
record breakers and trying various crafts, although the weather wasn’t always kind to us.

Luckily the sun shone for our end of term BBQ and visit from an ice cream van in the summer. Since being
indoors from September, we have been able to carry on with Skills Builders and Unit Meeting Activities which
form a large part of our programme. Some of the Brownies completed Interest Badges at home, and we have
welcomed new Brownies along, as some of our older ones moved on to Guides and Scouts. We welcomed
Ceilidhkidz to Brownies to teach us some Scottish Country Dances on St Andrew’s Day. We also managed to
get back to our termly trips out of the Hall with a visit to Boardwalk on Ocean Terminal for roller skating and
to the King’s Theatre for the Panto.
We look forward to what 2022 will bring.
Catherine Buchanan

183rd Guides
Online meetings resumed at the end of January, and the girls attempted a few crafts, made “Bionic” hands,
baked Thinking Day cakes for their families, and succeeded in completing their Craftivism Badge. We enjoyed
a Harry Potter Challenge Night and made Danish Heart Baskets filled with heart shaped sweets for Mothers’
Day- although it was a little bit frustrating at times for the leaders not being able to step in and give a hand,
but some of our Guide Mums ably deputised- and often joined in!

Ali from the RSPB provided activities and information about Scottish wildlife and the work of other Wildlife
Charities for one of our Zoom meetings and we finished the term with some Easter Egg activities – and
chocolate. Although we felt that Zoom was our best option under the circumstances, having the opportunity
to chat with Mums and Dads on our weekly equipment drops was a good way to feel connected with the
girls and their families, and to know that what we were doing was appreciated.

Following a slightly longer Easter break than usual, we began Outdoor meetings face to face in the Church
grounds. We enjoyed being back together, and taking part in Wide Games, some Tracking and Trail laying
activities, Fire lighting and Outdoor Cooking on stoves and Barbeques. Our badge work continued, and
several Be Well, Explore and Take Action Theme Awards were achieved, and steady progress was made
towards Bronze, Silver and Gold Section Awards.

Our Autumn term highlights included getting back in to the Hall, doing some traditional Promise and Law
activities, mixing up “Potions” for Mixology Badge, Glowrienteering, lighting fires in colanders, carving
pumpkins, a Scottish theme night, Christmas Crafts and a Christmas Party - although we took the decision
to cancel the last meeting before Christmas due to a tightening of Covid Restrictions, in order to keep
contact to a minimum so that everyone could enjoy a safer run up to Christmas.

The leader team would like to thank everyone who has kept us going over the past year, and would also like
to thank the Guides, and their parents, for their enthusiasm, input, and humour throughout.
On the subject of “Thank You” s, we would also like to record our thanks to Victoria Adams, who has been
our Young Leader, Adult Helper, and Occasional Unit Helper for the past 20 years, and who decided to leave
her role in the autumn. Victoria was our valued extra pair of hands, whether setting things up, clearing away
equipment, wiping tables, sweeping up glitter, prepping food, helping the girls plan, listening, offering ideas
and help, but mostly by being herself and a “friend and a sister to all other Guides”.
