Twenty Ahadith

1. “Religion is sincerity.' We said: To whom?' The Holy Prophet said:

To Allah, His book, His Messenger, the leaders of the Muslims and to
their common people”

Beliefs
This Hadith teaches us sincerity in beliefs and actions, as the good
deeds performed with sincerity will be rewarded fully whereas, the
actions which lack honesty and sincere beliefs will be nullified. It
also teaches a person to be a good servant of Allah (Subhanahu wa-
ta’ala), and His Messenger and a useful member of the society. We
also come to know that success of a Muslim is based on sincerity to
Islam and the community; there is no place of hypocrisy in Islam. In
short, this Hadith requires from the believers to be obedient to
Allah (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala), the Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-
un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” and the righteous leaders as
well as to think for the welfare of the community. The Holy Prophet
said, “Who so obeys my commander, obeys me and who so disobeys my
commander disobeys me.”

Actions

We should never associate anybody with Allah (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala)

and follow the Sunnah of Muhammad “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin
SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” with sincerity. Side by side we must obey
the righteous leaders and follow the rules and regulations set by
them unless they are un-Islamic. We should not launch unnecessary
strikes against them to weaken their government. We should pay taxes,
follow the traffic rules no matter if they are about parking or
regarding a signal. We must give Zakaat to help the poor, give them
food and clothing, as Muhammad “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin
SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” was sincere to the poor emigrants of
Makkah and he made the Ansar help them rehabilitate.

2. None of you believes until he wants for his brother what he wants
for himself.

Beliefs
This Hadith teaches us about equality and brotherhood. It eliminates
selfishness from a person and society. It also clarifies that a true
belief includes concern for the welfare of others as all the believers
are like a single family. They perish the thoughts of racial, tribal,
social, geographical and linguistic differences among them. As the
holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi
Wasallam” said, “You cannot enter paradise unless you are a believer
and you cannot be a believer unless there is reciprocal love among
you.”

Actions

We should not prefer ourselves to others and must not give any lower
quality things to any of our friends, brothers or any person as we
don’t like low quality things for ourselves. When we make food, we
should give it to our neighbours and servants first and then eat it
ourselves. Rotten food should not be given to the servants. We should
not abuse, backbite or disrespect anyone and should not taunt or
ridicule others just as we don’t want that someone should make fun
of us. The Muslims exhibit example of unity and brotherhood such as
during earthquakes and floods, they donate their best of clothes,
blankets and food items in order to help the affectees as the people
of Yathrib shared their belongings with the poor emigrants from
Makkah.

3. Let him who believes in Allah and the last Day either speak good
or keep silent , and let him who believes in Allah and the last Day
be generous to his neighbour, and let him who believes in Allah and
the last Day be generous to his guest.

Beliefs
This Hadith teaches us that demonstration of belief in Allah
(Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) and Day of Judgment must be projected through
care for humanity. We also learn that true belief is associated with
kindness in attitude towards others especially neighbours and guests.
The Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi
Wasallam” said, “A person whose neighbours are not safe from his evil
will not enter the Garden.” This Hadith advises us not only to be
generous in our dealings with our fellow beings but also speak nicely
and politely with them.

Actions

We should have the best use of tongue and should not abuse or
backbite. True believers should not tease, hurt or disturb the
neighbours by making noise, must not listen to loud music and should
not throw garbage in front of their gates. Rather, we should visit
them to share their happy and sad moments of life and send them food
and gifts. We should facilitate the guests by giving them a warm
welcome, should give them time and serve them nice food as according
to the Hadith it is a compulsory duty to entertain the guest for
three days and to feed him more than that is a charity.

4. A man asked the messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and give
him peace): do you think that if I perform the obligatory Prayers
(salat), fast (Sawm) in Ramadan, treat as lawful that which is lawful
and treat as forbidden that which is forbidden, and do nothing
further, I shall enter paradise? He said: yes

Beliefs

According to this Hadith it is mandatory on believers to have enough

education about their religion so that they can differ between right
and wrong. This Hadith shows that Islam is a very simple religion.
It is very easy to enter paradise by performing a few common and
basic rituals of Islam i.e. Praying, Fasting (Sawm), practising legal
and avoiding illegal things set by Islam. The rituals which are
mentioned in this Hadith can be performed by every person rich and
poor. The Prayers (salat) is so important that Muhammad “Rasool
Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” said, “He who
gives up Prayers (salat) has indeed disbelieved.”

Actions

We should not neglect the Prayers (salat) and must perform them on
time with full devotion. Muslims should fast (Sawm) in the month of
Ramadan; should not eat, drink dawn till dusk. While in the state of
Fast (Sawm) one should not only stay away from food and drinks but
must strictly restrain from fight, abuses and every kind of vulgarity
as well. It is illegal to pass a day of Fast (Sawm) by playing indoor
games or by watching movies. It is required from the believers to
restrain from all forbidden things like wine, usury/interest or
stealing. The first Muslim community was very strict to observe the
principles of Islam, such as when the wine was declared as haram they
broke the pitchers of wine and it flowed in street like rain water.

5. Every person's every joint must perform a charity every day the
sun comes up: to act justly between two people is a charity; to help
a man with his mount, lifting him onto it or hoisting up his
belongings onto it is a charity: a good word is a charity: every step
you take to Prayers (salat) is a charity: and removing a harmful
thing from the road is a charity.

Beliefs
This Hadith teaches that the whole life of a Muslim should be spent
in the obedience of Allah (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) and for the welfare
of humanity as Islam aims at a supporting and caring society. Charity
is a continuous process and it is not only the domain of rich people
but even the poor can also perform it in different forms. The charity
is not only giving Zakaat or sacrificing an animal but every good
deed of kindness is graded as charity no matter how small it is, even
if it is a removal of a stone or spikes from the path. As the Holy
Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam”
said, “Every good act is charity.”

Actions

Judges and elders should not do favoritism or injustice. We are also

required to speak gently; we should not taunt and be harsh to anyone.
We should even remove stones, thorns or any other harmful things from
the way to avoid any inconvenience to others. We should not even park
our cars in the middle of roads to avoid inconvenience for others.
Muslims should help handicapped, sick, old and blind people in riding,
carrying their luggage or crossing the road. Once the Holy Prophet
“Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” carried
the luggage of an old woman and dropped it at her home. This Hadith
also advises that Muslim men must go to masjid to offer Prayers
(salat) as their Praying in masjid is appreciated.

6. Whosoever of you sees an evil action, let him change it with his
hand, and if he is not able to do so then with his tongue, and if he
is not able to do so then with his heart, and that is the weakest of
faith.

Beliefs

This Hadith teaches that there is no place for evil in Islam. Thus,
every evil and sin must be rejected, disliked and annihilated from
the life of a person as well as from the society at any cost, either
through hand, tongue or heart as it pollutes the society, brings
discriminations and disrespect to the Islamic norms and values. Evil
means disobedience to Allah (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) and the holy
Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam”
such as cheating, stealing, backbiting, abusing and vulgarity. Islam
establishes a society where everyone is treated equally and no one
is oppressed. As the Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin
SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” said, “Help your brother when he does
wrong or even if wrong is done to him.”

Actions

Those who have power such as leaders, parents and police should stop
evil with their hands by arresting or punishing the criminals, as the
Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi
Wasallam” got the hand of a noble lady cut who committed theft. The
writers and journalists should write against the evil in their books
and news-papers. The teachers and scholars must stop evil with their
tongues. Common people must not become the part of evil. In short if
everyone will stand against evil then the society will be pure from
corruption and social evils; such as cheating, stealing and
vulgarities and mixed gatherings of opposite genders.

7. It was said: O Messenger of Allah, who is the most excellent of

men? The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and give him peace)
said: the believer who strives hard in the way of Allah with his
person and his property.

Beliefs

According to this Hadith a true believer doesn’t only obey Allah

(Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) but he also sacrifices belongings in His way.
This Hadith teaches two main kinds of Jihad. First is physical and
spiritual in the way of Allah (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) and second is
with wealth. This Hadith regards, Jihad in the way of Allah (Subhanahu
wa-ta’ala) as one of the best acts of worship, because in Jihad a
person fully devotes himself and his property to the will of Allah
(Subhanahu wa-ta’ala). It not only wipes the sins but also saves a
person from the fire of Hell. The Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-
un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” said, “Fire will not touch a
foot which trods in the way of Allah.” Literal meaning of jihad is
to put in an effort but, in the Islamic terminology it means to fight
in the way of Allah (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) against corruption, evil,
ignorance and those enemies who want to end the existence of Islam
and Muslims. It is a compulsory act for the believers.

Actions

We should strive in the way of Allah (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala). With our

wealth we should open education centers to end ignorance from the
society, we should finish poverty through making donations to the
NGOs, and we should also donate money for those who are fighting for
the true cause of Islam but we need to make sure that our wealth must
not be spent on the killing of innocent civilians. The 1st Muslim
community also donated for Jihad in Tabook Expedition. We should not
only dislike evil from our hearts but also participate in the battles
to protect our people, our religion and our Islamic state from the
hostile enemies. We must ensure that by our hands, no innocent life
or property from the enemy side be destroyed without any dire need.

8. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and give him peace)
said : whom do you count to be a martyr among you? They said: O
Messenger of Allah, whoever is killed in the way of Allah is a martyr.
He said: in that case the martyrs of my community will be very few!
He who is killed in the way off Allah is a martyr, he who dies a
natural death in the way of Allah is a martyr, he who dies in the
plague in the way of Allah is a martyr, he who dies of cholera in the
way of Allah is a martyr.

Beliefs

This Hadith teaches that martyrdom is highly appreciated and honored

by Islam. As the Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin
SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” said, “Fire will not touch a foot which
trods in the way of Allah (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala).” We also come to
know that every painful and innocent death is categorized as
martyrdom, in addition to the death in the way of Allah (Subhanahu
wa-ta’ala). This Hadith also classifies martyrdom in two kinds:
 Kamil [in the way of Allah (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala)].
 Naqis (all painful and innocent deaths).
Apart from the kinds of martyrdom mentioned in the theme of this
Hadith, there are 35 more kinds of martyrdom as well.

Actions

Muslims should engage themselves in Jihad of any kind in order to die

in Allah’s (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) way as martyrs. It is confirmed that
everyone has to die at his specific time, therefore, one should not
die in disobedience to Allah (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala). We must not start
any work with bad intentions. We should not only remain in obedience
to Allah (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) but must also live to serve humanity.
We should spend our life defending our country, family and other
Muslims against aggression. Hence whenever we die it will be the
death of martyr, if we are living or dying for a good cause. If anyone
is in trouble or suffering from any disease he should not blame Allah
(Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) that why He made him suffer from this disease,
but he must be patient and pray to Allah (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) for
cure; if he dies in patience he will be called a martyr.
9. No one eats better food than that which he eats out of the work
of his hand.

Beliefs

This Hadith teaches that Islam appreciates hard work, independence

and legal earning. Islam does not only teach us about the religious
duties but also covers the economical aspect of life. The virtue of
earning lawfully through individual effort is preferred by Allah
(Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) and the holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-
Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam”. Muslims must take
responsibility for earning their own livelihood. If everyone works
hard, then poverty, beggary and dependence on others will end and a
corruption-free society will take their place. Our beloved the Holy
Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam”
was reported to have kissed the hands of labourers, and once he said,
“The sins, of a person who returns home exhausted by the search of
lawful earning, are forgiven by Allah.”

Actions

We should not earn our livelihood through begging, stealing, cheating

or usury. Rather we must work hard in offices, at shops and in fields.
There must not be any adulteration in food stuff and our goods must
not be illegal. We must earn our livelihood legally, no matter it is
the job of a cobbler. It should be free from cheating and corruptions.
Upon returning from Tabook expedition, one of the companions of the
holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi
Wasallam” of Islam called Saad Ansari (radi Allahu anho) welcomed him
and took the Holy Prophet's “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin
SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” hands in his hand. The Holy Prophet
“Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” realized
the coarseness of his hand and asked about the reason for this. Saad
(radi Allahu anho) said that he worked with a rope and shovel to earn
money for his family. Then the Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-
Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” kissed his hand.
10. One who manages the affairs of the widow and the poor man is like
the one who exerts himself in the way of Allah, or the one who stands
for Prayers (salat) in the night or fasts in the day.

Beliefs

This Hadith teaches that helping the poor and the needy is a reward
gaining act. We also come to know that serving the poor is the same
as serving Allah (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) as in this Hadith, serving
humanity is compared with Fasting (Sawm), Prayers (salat) and Jihad.
Islam doesn’t only focus on religious aspect but also aims at a care
of society. Allah (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) says” ……..Treat with kindness
your parents & orphans & those in need.” Thus, those who are always
mindful of the weak and the poor and constantly strive for their
welfare are engaged in perpetual worship. Umar (radi Allahu anho),
the second Caliph of Islam, found a widow and her children crying due
to hunger and the nonavailability of food. Seeing this, he himself
brought food for them.

Actions

We should help widows and the needy by giving them money, shelter,
clothes and should protect them from the misconduct of others. The
Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi
Wasallam” married with Saudah (radi Allahu anha) who was a helpless
widow. The rich can set business for them, jobs can be given to them,
tuition fee of their kids and their loans can be paid. Nowadays we
have various organizations which help the needy. Side by side our
government should also take initiative to give them free education,
medication and funds to enable them to live respectably and stay away
from corruption.
11. I and the man who brings up an orphan will be in paradise like
this' and he pointed with his two fingers, the index finger and the
middle finger.

Beliefs

Through this Hadith we come to know that giving a helping hand to the
orphans is a reward gaining act and paradise is guaranteed on this
act. An orphan generally is the one who is not an adult and his father
has passed away, but in a broader meaning, people who lack
supervision, care, guidance and support are known as orphans. As
orphans mostly depend on others, therefore Islam lays emphasis on
their rights. Kind and just treatment with them has been promised
with high and exalted status in paradise. The Holy Prophet “Rasool
Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” said, “The best
Muslim house is that in which an orphan is well treated and the worst
Muslim house is that in which an orphan is ill treated.”
Actions

We should help orphans by giving them money, shelter, clothes and

should protect them from the misconduct of others. Rich people can
set up business for them, jobs can be given to them, their tuition
fee and loan can also be paid. Nowadays we have various organizations
which help them, side by side our government should also take the
initiative to give them free education, medication and funds to enable
them to live respectably and stay away from corruption. The relatives
should not usurp their property. The Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah
Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” set an example for the
world by paying for the plot of Masjid-e-Nabvi to the orphans who
owned it, even though they wanted to give it for free.

12. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and give him peace)
send Abu Musa and Muaz bin Jabal to Yamen, and he sent each of them
to govern a part. Then he said: “Be gentle and do not be hard, and
cause rejoicing and do not alienate”

Beliefs

The Hadith teaches us that Islamic leadership must be democratic and

gentle, not cruel and autocratic as putting others at ease is the
moral system of Islam. The Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-
Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” advised Abu Moosa and Muadh
(radi Allahu anhoma) to be kind and caring towards the public. At
another occasion, the Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin
SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” said, “Make things easy and do not make
them hard and cheer up people and do not repel them.” As the common
man comes under the authority of ruler, he depends on his policies
therefore, in this Hadith high authorities are made responsible to
look after the needs of public in a harmonious way. If the leaders
are kind and facilitators then the public will support them otherwise
it will lead to resentment, chaos and anarchy.

Actions

Leaders should not make very strict rules and should not overburden
the public through high taxes and inflation. They should not do
favoritism and must not set high punishments for small mistakes,
rather they need to give prizes, bonus and rewards on the achievements
of people. They should not only be good to Muslims but must be kind
to the non-Muslims as well and they should not force the non Muslims
to accept Islam. They must consider the public equal to them. The
second Caliph, Umar (radi Allahu anho) used to disguise and walk in
the streets to enquire if his public is in need. Once he saw an old
non Muslim beg, so he asked him the reason for doing so. The old man
replied that he could not pay the tax on account of his old age. Umar
(radi Allahu anho) not only excused old non Muslims from the tax but
he fixed allowance for all old people.
13. He who studies the Quran is like the owner of tethered camels.
If he attends to them he will keep hold of them, but if he lets them
loose they will go away.

Beliefs

This Hadith demands strong relationship between Quran and the Muslims
that mere reading of it, is not enough, practice of its teaching is
must too. In this Hadith, the Quran has been compared with a camel
which means that a camel is a source of benefit and makes life easy
similarly the Quran is not only to be touched with respect but it
should be used as a source of guidance. As it is the only authentic
divine book and a complete code of life therefore, it must be recited
daily so that we don't forget it. Allah (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) declares
this book as guidance, He says, “It is guidance for mankind.”

Actions

We should not just keep the Quran on high racks, but should daily
recite it at homes, schools, offices, shops etc. We should practice
its teachings; and recite its translation and Tafseer to know its
details. The Muslims think it as a compulsory duty to teach Holy
Quran to their children even from their childhood as the Quran is
Allah’s (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) letter to us or a manual book for our
guidance and we cannot be successful unless we understand and follow
it. 2nd Caliph Umar (radi Allahu anho) ordered his soldiers to teach
the Quran to the converts in the conquered areas.

14. May God show mercy to a man who is kindly when he sells, when he
buys, and when he demands his money back.

Beliefs
This Hadith tells that fair dealings and compassionate behavior
towards fellow beings, is loved and rewarded by Allah (Subhanahu wa-
ta’ala). Islam promotes social and economical welfare in a society,
it is not only the religion of masjid but it gives proper system of
economy as well. It gives fixed rules how to earn, what to earn, and
how to spend. We also come to know that Allah’s (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala)
love is complementary to our kindness to mankind. Honest and fair
dealings in business are rewarded in this life in the form of profit
and blessings while in the life Hereafter, by Allah's (Subhanahu wa-
ta’ala) mercy and Heaven. The Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-
Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” said, “Whoever sells anything
with defect in it which he doesn’t expose, will remain hated of God.”

Actions

Traders must not charge high prices, they must not cheat in the
dealings by hiding the defect in commodity, by mixing inferior or
harmful stuff to the superior. We should not deal in usury and must
not torture or harass the debtor while taking the loan back, rather
we should be polite and must consider the problems of debtors by
giving him more time. In these days, gangsters/loan sharks are used
to harass the debtor to take loan back, this practice is un-Islamic
and based on cruelty.

15. God will not show mercy to him who does not show mercy to others.

Beliefs

This Hadith teaches that Allah (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) loves His

creation and does not let anyone harm them. It also shows that Allah’s
(Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) love is complementary to our kindness to
mankind as mercy is one of the most special attribute of Allah
(Subhanahu wa-ta’ala). The Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-
Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” narrated from Allah (Subhanahu
wa-ta’ala), “My mercy overcomes My wrath.” This Hadith reflects the
teachings of Islam to be merciful and kind to our fellow beings, to
pardon their mistakes and trivial misdeeds, and to seek Allah's
(Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) mercy for all.

Actions

We should not beat, kill, abuse, taunt or harass anyone no matter if

it is a human or an animal, rather we should treat them with love and
care, solve their problems, give them food and shelter and take care
of our dependants. If our servants make any mistake we should forgive
them; if they happen to break any expensive thing we must not penalize
or beat them. A remarkable example of mercy was shown by the Holy
Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam”
at the time of Conquest of Makkah, when he forgave his bitterest
enemies.

16. The believers are like a single man: if his eye is affected he
is affected, and if his head is affected he is all affected.
16. The believers are like a single man: if his eye is affected he
is affected, and if his head is affected he is all affected.

Beliefs

This Hadith emphasizes on the concept of brotherhood and unity among

Muslims, as they are bounded together in the same faith in Allah
(Subhanahu wa-ta’ala), in the Quran and in the holy Prophet “Rasool
Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam”. This Hadith
develops a strong sense of unity in the entire Muslim Ummah and
perishes the thoughts of racial, tribal, social, geographical and
linguistic differences among them. Hence it is the duty of all Muslims
to be kind and caring to each other, to cooperate and be aware of
each other's problems. In another Hadith the Holy Prophet “Rasool
Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” regards them
like the parts of a body. “One Believer to another is like the (bricks
of) building, each one is holding & supporting the other.”

Actions

We should help the Muslims through our wealth, by giving clothes and
shelter if they are poor or stricken by natural disaster such as
floods, famine and earthquake. As the Muslims showed a remarkable
example of unity and brotherhood in the earthquake that struck the
Northern Areas in 2005 by providing food, shelter, clothing,
medicines. Muslims all over the world didn’t rest until they
rehabilitated the affectees thoroughly as the people of Yathrib
shared their belongings with the poor emigrants from Makkah. We must
give them political support wherever they are oppressed in the world.

17. Modesty produces nothing but good

Beliefs

This Hadith teaches that modesty makes a person compound of virtues

as modesty is the landmark of the fundamental characteristics of
Islam. The Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu
Alaihi Wasallam” said, “Every religion has a distinctive quality and
the distinctive quality of Islam is Modesty.” The literal meaning of
modesty is a state of chastity, simplicity & decency in the limits
of Islamic teachings; it accommodates our positive behavior to
others, our clothing, self discipline and relation with Allah
(Subhanahu wa-ta’ala).

Actions

We need to keep a distance from opposite genders. The Holy Prophet

“Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” was a
symbol of modesty; he never even touched the hand of any stranger
lady for the oath taking. He used to take oath from the ladies by
holding the rope or piece of cloth or by dipping the finger into a
water bowl. We should not meet them alone without the presence of
their close relatives, must not shake hand, stare, blame, taunt and
perform ill-relations. We should not disobey Allah (Subhanahu wa-
ta’ala) and the holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin
SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam”. We must wear decent clothes which do not
reveal the features of the body i.e. not too tight, not too lose and
see through. Men must not behave or dress up like women, nor should
women behave or dress up like men. We should not use abusive and
vulgar language as it is common among friends nowadays.

18. He who has in his heart as much faith as a grain of mustard seed
will not enter hell, and he who has in his heart as much pride as a
grain of mustard seed will not enter paradise.

Beliefs

This Hadith teaches that faith and pride do not exist together in one
heart. It is one of the biggest crimes. It makes Allah (Subhanahu wa-
ta’ala) so angry that He will not allow a proud person to enter
paradise as arrogance and pride are the vices of the devil himself.
A proud and boastful person is disliked by Allah (Subhanahu wa-
ta’ala) as he degrades others with the superiority complex. Pride is
mainly shown by boasting about wealth, brilliance, status and beauty.
The Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi
Wasallam” narrated from Allah (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala), “Pride is my
cloak & greatness is my robe and he who competes with me in respect
of either of them I shall cast him into the Hell-fire” (Hadith-e-
Qudsi). So a tiny amount of faith will lead to Heaven and a tiny
amount of pride will lead to Hell.

Actions
We should not degrade people by making fun of their weaknesses. We
should not boast of our beauties, riches, brilliance and status as
it is mostly seen, that rich people or the leaders talk to others
very rudely, they don’t sit with the poor and they even don’t reply
to the greeting and salam of the poor. We must strictly follow the
examples of our the Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin
SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam”. He used to sit on the ground with common
people, and disliked to be treated like a king. He strictly forbade
his companions to stand up (like the people used to stand in the time
of ignorance) for him when he entered a room. We should not only be
humble and decent but we also need to develop our faith by offering
Prayers (salat) because the more our faith is strong, the more humble
and decent we will be.

19. The world is the believer's prison and the unbeliever's paradise.

Beliefs

This Hadith teaches that the believers are restricted to the commands
of Allah (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) and the holy Prophet “Rasool Allah
Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” while the unbelievers
are free to do anything in this world. We also come to know that the
believer's goal is not only to achieve the success in this world but
also in the life hereafter. The Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-
un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” said, “Live in this world as
if you were a stranger or a wayfarer.” Muslims shouldn’t get engrossed
in the temptations of this world. They need to lead a controlled
life, therefore, their lives are termed as the life of a prisoner who
cannot live in a jail by his wishes. On the other hand, an
unbeliever’s life in this world is without any concept of
accountability hence, he leads his life as he wishes, that’s why this
world is his paradise. In this Hadith, comparison between prison and
paradise is depicted, as there is no freedom in prison but in Heaven,
there is total liberty.
Actions

A true Muslim is he who leads his life in total submission to Allah

(Subhanahu wa-ta’ala); his eating, drinking, earning and relations
with other should be according to the limits set by Islam. He should
not pass days and nights against Islamic teachings such as in wine
drinking, stealing, cheating, not paying Zakaat, and not performing
Prayers (salat). Muslims are just like prisoners who cannot live in
the prison with their own will or freedom. Therefore, the Muslims
should not associate themselves totally to this world but they should
prepare for the next life too, where they will have total freedom
while the unbelievers will suffer in Hell.

20.God does not look at your forms and your possessions, but he looks
at your hearts and your deeds.

Beliefs

This Hadith teaches that Allah (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) knows the

intentions of our hearts and will judge every good act of a person
on the account of his intention, as He doesn’t care about the status
of a person but He cares about how a person acts. The Holy Prophet
“Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” said,
“Indeed actions are judged by the intentions.” Therefore, it is
important to be sincere while performing any good act and our purpose
should be to please Allah (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) and to help mankind.
We need to eliminate the element of hypocrisy and boastfulness from
our actions.

Actions

We should not offer Prayers (salat) in order to be called pious,

should not pay Zakaat to be called generous or to get our names
published in the news-papers or to be shown on T.V. It is mostly seen
that people announce their donations publicly and display the
sacrificial animals, to boast. All these obligations should be
performed to please Allah (Subhanahu wa-ta’ala) and to help His
creations, instead. Otherwise, actions done to show off would be
rejected. Once, a companion of Muhammad “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-
Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” earned a few dates by watering
the garden of a Jew and donated them for the Tabook expedition. The
Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi
Wasallam” spread those dates over the entire collected donation by
saying that they were the pinnacle of all the donations due to the
amount of the sincere feelings and pure intentions.

Individual Ahadith
The Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi
Wasallam” focused on the training of an individual Muslim so that he
can lead a purposeful and successful life. He “Rasool Allah Khatam-
un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” said. “The world is the
believer's prison and the unbeliever's paradise.” This hadith guides
orders a Muslim to lead his life in total submission to Allah
(Subhanahu wa-ta’ala); his eating, drinking, earning and relations
with other should be according to the limits set by Islam. He should
not pass days and nights against Islamic teachings such as in wine
drinking, stealing, cheating, not paying Zakaat, and not performing
Prayers (salat). Muslims are just like prisoners who cannot live in
the prison with their own will or freedom. Therefore, he should not
associate himself totally to this world but he should prepare for the
next life too, where he will have total freedom.
The Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi
Wasallam” further said. “Modesty produces nothing but good.”
In the light of this Hadith a muslim needs to keep a distance from
opposite genders. The Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin
SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” was a symbol of modesty; he never even
touched the hand of any stranger lady for the oath taking. He used
to take oath from the ladies by holding the rope or piece of cloth
or by dipping the finger into a water bowl. A Muslim should not meet
opposite gender alone without the presence of the close relatives.
He must not shake hand, stare, blame, taunt and perform ill-relations.
A Muslim must wear decent clothes which do not reveal the features
of the body i.e. not too tight, not too lose and see through. Men
must not behave or dress up like women, nor should women behave or
dress up like men.
The Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi
Wasallam” also said. “One who manages the affairs of the widow and
the poor man is like the one who exerts himself in the way of Allah,
or the one who stands for Prayers (salat) in the night or fasts in
the day.” A Muslim should help widows and the needy by giving them
money, shelter, clothes and should protect them from the misconduct
of others. The Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin
SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” married with Saudah (radi Allahu anha)
who was a helpless widow. The rich can set business for them, jobs
can be given to them, tuition fee of their kids and their loans can
be paid. Nowadays we have various organizations which help the needy.
Once the Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu
Alaihi Wasallam” said. “A man asked the messenger of Allah (may Allah
bless him and give him peace): do you think that if I perform the
obligatory Prayers (salat), fast (Sawm) in Ramadan, treat as lawful
that which is lawful and treat as forbidden that which is forbidden,
and do nothing further, I shall enter paradise? He said: yes” this
Hadith guides that a person should not neglect the Prayers (salat)
and must perform them on time with full devotion. He should fast
(Sawm) in the month of Ramadan; While in the state of Fast (Sawm) one
should not only stay away from food and drinks but must restrain from
fight, abuses and every kind of vulgarity as well. It is illegal to
pass a day of Fast (Sawm) by playing indoor games or by watching
movies. It is required from the believers to restrain from all
forbidden things like wine, usury/interest or stealing. The first
Muslim community was very strict to observe the principles of Islam,
such as when the wine was declared as haram they broke the pitchers
of wine and it flowed in street like rain water.
The Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi
Wasallam” further advised a believer to work hard and said.” No one
eats better food than that which he eats out of the work of his hand.”
A Muslim should not earn his livelihood through begging, stealing,
cheating or usury. Rather he must work hard in offices, at shops and
in fields. There must not be any adulteration in food stuff and our
goods must not be illegal. He must earn his livelihood legally, no
matter it is the job of a cobbler. It should be free from cheating
and corruptions. Upon returning from Tabook expedition, one of the
companions of the holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin
SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” of Islam called Saad Ansari (radi Allahu
anho) welcomed him and took the Holy Prophet’s “Rasool Allah Khatam-
un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” hands in his hand. The Holy
Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam”
realized the coarseness of his hand and asked about the reason for
this. Saad (radi Allahu anho) said that he worked with a rope and
shovel to earn money for his family. Then the Holy Prophet “Rasool
Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi Wasallam” kissed his hand.
Communal Ahadith
The Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi
Wasallam” advised believers to observe equality by saying, “None of
you believes until he wants for his brother what he wants for
himself.” In the light of this hadith we should not prefer ourselves
to others and must not give any lower quality things to any of our
brothers or friends as we don’t like low quality things for ourselves.
When we make food, we should give it to our neighbours and servants
first and then eat it ourselves. Rotten food should not be given to
the servants. The Muslims exhibit example of unity and brotherhood
such as during earthquakes and floods, they donate their best of
clothes, blankets and food items in order to help the affectees as
the people of Yathrib shared their belongings with the poor emigrants
from Makkah.
The Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi
Wasallam” further said.” Let him who believes in Allah and the last
Day either speak good or keep silent, and let him who believes in
Allah and the last Day be generous to his neighbour, and let him who
believes in Allah and the last Day be generous to his guest.” Thus
there should be mutual understanding in the society. True believers
should not tease, hurt or disturb the neighbours, not only in our
town but also our neighbouring countries.
Neighbours
and guests are not only from our country and religion even those who
visit us from other countries like other ministers, sport people and
tourists, all of them should be welcomed.
The Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi
Wasallam” also said. “God will not show mercy to him who does not
show mercy to others.” Hence we should not beat, kill, abuse, taunt
or harass anyone no matter if it is a human or an animal, rather we
should treat them with love and care, solve their problems, give them
food and shelter and take care of our dependants. Mercy should be
observed on international level too. No country should invade war on
another country unjustly and should not be cruel to the captives of
other countries and religions. A remarkable example of mercy was
shown by the Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu
Alaihi Wasallam” at the time of Conquest of Makkah, when he forgave
his bitterest enemies.
The Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi
Wasallam” talked about universal brotherhood and said. “The believers
are like a single man: if his eye is affected he is affected, and
if his head is affected he is all affected.” Thus we should help the
Muslims through our wealth, by giving clothes and shelter if they are
poor or stricken by natural disaster such as floods, famine and
earthquake. As the Muslims showed a remarkable example of unity and
brotherhood in the earthquake that struck the Northern Areas in 2005
by providing food, shelter, clothing, medicines. Muslims all over the
world didn’t rest until they rehabilitated the affectees thoroughly
as the people of Yathrib shared their belongings with the poor
emigrants from Makkah. We must give them political support wherever
they are oppressed in the world.
The Holy Prophet “Rasool Allah Khatam-un-Nabiyyin SallAllahu Alaihi
Wasallam” ordered the leaders to remain kind and just. The Messenger
of Allah (may Allah bless him and give him peace) send Abu Musa and
Muaz bin Jabal to Yamen, and he sent each of them to govern a part.
Then he said: “Be gentle and do not be hard, and cause rejoicing and
do not alienate” thus the leaders should not make very strict rules
and should not overburden the public through high taxes and inflation.
They should not do favoritism and must not set high punishments for
small mistakes, rather they need to give prizes, bonus and rewards
on the achievements of people. They should not only be good to Muslims
but must be kind to the non-Muslims as well and they should not force
the non Muslims to accept Islam. They must consider the public equal
to them. The second Caliph, Umar (radi Allahu anho) used to disguise
and walk in the streets to enquire if his public is in need. Once he
saw an old non Muslim beg, so he asked him the reason for doing so.
The old man replied that he could not pay the tax on account of his
old age. Umar (radi Allahu anho) not only excused old non Muslims
from the tax but he fixed allowance for all old people.
