Module
The Scientific Attitudes
1
Learning Competencies:
The learners should be able to recognize and show scientific attitudes
.

What I Need to Know

Scientific investigation is a quest to find the answer to a question using the
scientific method. In turn, the scientific method is a systematic process that involves using
measurable observations to formulate, test or modify a hypothesis (Study.com, 2015). In
doing Science Investigation or Research, student researchers must have an important
personality in order to be successful in their work. This is called Scientific attitude.

What you are expected to learn

After going through this module, you are expected to:

 Identify the different scientific attitudes
 Understand the importance of recognizing scientific attitudes

I. How to learn from this module:

This material will give you learning while having fun in doing the activities.
Make use of your time and resources in answering the activities. Before starting,
read the following tips that will help you in understanding and answering the
activities effectively.

1. Eliminate potential distractions before you start going through this module.
2. Take time to read and understand what the lesson is all about. Read
carefully the content of the module. If you want to take down notes, you can
write the important terms/phrases on your notebook or separate sheet of
paper.
3. Make sure to complete the activity and test items chronologically before
proceeding to the next one. When answering questions, clarity and direct to
the point is the key.
4. Be honest at all times.
5. Safety first. Perform the experiments with extra precaution. Wear personal
protective equipment to avoid burns, wound cuts, and splashes
6. Ask your teacher online, facilitator or guide if you don’t understand the
content of the module.

II. Pre – test

1. Maria is a scientist that listens to and respect the ideas of others. She accepts
criticisms and changes his mind if reliable resources or evidence contradicts her
beliefs. What scientific attitude did Maria show?
a. Objectivity
b. Open-Mindedness
c. Curiosity
d. Perseverance

2. Newton’s First Law was similar to Galileo’s concept of inertia, yet he never
claimed he work out his laws by himself. What do you call this scientific
attitude?

a. Skepticism
b. Intellectual Honesty
c. Objectivity
d. Curiosity

3. Michael based his conclusions on evidences but he was in doubt, thus, he

suspends his judgement until he was sure of his result. What kind of scientific
attitude did Michael possess?

a. Objectivity
b. Perseverance
c. Skepticism
d. Open-Mindedness

4. Who among of the following students shows perseverance?

a. Winter listens to the suggestions of her classmates upon conducting

experiments
b. Hero conduct another trial on his experiment despite of his failure on the first
trial
c. Sofia listens to the suggestions of her classmates upon conducting
experiments
d. Ani collects the results of his experiment but was in doubt of the gathered
data, thus he gathers more evidences before making judgment.

5. Swaggy is conducting an experiment of a gold pill to see if how many days will it
change its color. He put the gold pill in the petri dish and covered it. After 3
days, he found out that the gold pill turns red. He then record truthfully
what he observed. Based on the underlined statement, Swaggy shows an
attitude of

a. Objectivity and intellectual honesty

b. Skepticism and Open mindedness
c. Curiosity and perseverance
d. Objectivity and skepticism
Week 1 Lesson
Scientific Attitudes

Scientific Attitude is defined as the desire to know and understand, questioning to

all statements, search for data and their meaning, search for verification, and
consideration of consequences (Gardner, 1975; Osborne, Simon & Collins, 2003).

According to Sokanu Interactive Inc. “The word scientist is a general term, used to
describe someone who researches and examines various aspects of the physical world in
order to attain a better understanding of how things work and function. There are many
specializations of 'scientist', and depending on which field of study one chooses to follow,
the work can vary greatly. Each scientist, however, follows 'the scientific method', which is
a strict set of rules that ensure all new discoveries are factual and not just speculation.”

Activity1.1. I and My Science IDOL

What you will need

Pencil / Ball pen
Long Bond Paper

What to do
Search for a scientist and read about his life story: including
his/her achievements, and contributions in science. Identify which
scientific attitude he/she was known best and cite an attitude that you
possess which you think matches on your attitude. Follow the format
below and write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.
On the other hand, if internet is not accessible, you can ask a
science teacher in your school through messaging him/her. Also includes
his/her achievements, and contributions in science. Identify which
scientific attitude he/she was known best that also matchers your
attitude.
Activity 1.2. In this activity, you will be able to recognize the different
Scientific Attitudes

What you will need

Pencil / Ball pen
Long Bond Paper

What to do
Read the instructions on each activities in order you to be able to
answer the following questions

List down 5 questions that come up into your mind when

you saw the bottle.
1. ________________________________________________

2. ________________________________________________

3. ________________________________________________

4. ________________________________________________

5. ________________________________________________

On the activity above you ask questions on the things that you observed on the
picture. That scientific attitude is called Curiosity. Curiosity means eager to learn or know
more. It is a desire to seek out and consume scientific information. On the other hand,
Intellectual Honesty means is honest to collect or gather the data or facts to arrive at
honest results. You never claimed a work if you used the work of others as your bases.
Like Newton’s First Law was similar to Galileo’s concept of inertia, Newton never claimed
he work out his laws by himself.
Observed the diagram below, read and understand the text. Answer the following
question after.

Diagram 1.0
How will you explain in 1 paragraph the statement above?

In your explanation above, define honesty based on your own understanding

“The essence of the independent mind lies not in what it thinks, but in how it
thinks.” —Christopher Hitchens, author and journalist

By the end of this section, you will be able to:

 define critical thinking

Thinking comes naturally. You don’t have to make it happen—it just does. But you can
make it happen in different ways. For example, you can think positively or negatively. You
can think with “heart” and you can think with rational judgment. You can also think
strategically and analytically, and mathematically and scientifically. These are a few of
multiple ways in which the mind can process thought.

Answer the following questions below

Where you able to answer the 6-letter word being asked in the box?
What did you do to be able to answer the 6 questions?

Did you analyze the question and think critically before you answer them?

On your activity, you were able to develop critical thinking. Critical thinking is the
objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgment or solution.

What Is Critical Thinking?

Critical thinking is clear,
reasonable, reflective thinking
focused on deciding what to
believe or do. It means asking
probing questions like, “How do
we know?” or “Is this true in
every case or just in this
instance?” It involves being
skeptical and challenging
assumptions, rather than simply
memorizing facts or blindly
accepting what you hear or read.
Imagine, for example, that
you’re reading a history textbook.
You wonder who wrote it and
why, because you detect
certain biases in the writing. You
find that the author has a limited
scope of research focused only
on a particular group within a
population. In this case, your
critical thinking reveals that there
are “other sides to the story.”
Who are critical thinkers,
and what characteristics do they
have in common? Critical
thinkers are usually curious and
reflective people. They like to
explore and probe new areas
and seek knowledge,
clarification, and new solutions.
They ask pertinent questions,
evaluate statements and
arguments, and they distinguish
between facts and opinion. They
are also willing to examine their own beliefs, possessing a manner of humility that allows
them to admit lack of knowledge or understanding when needed. They are open to
changing their mind. Perhaps most of all, they actively enjoy learning, and seeking new
knowledge is a lifelong pursuit.

Answer the following questions about critical thinking

1. What is the difference between FIRST-ORDER and SECOND-ORDER

thinking?
First-order thinking is reasoned and Second-order thinking is a “gut-
reaction”
First-order thinking is the most important, while Second-order thinking is
less important
First-order thinking is spontaneous, while Second-order thinking is
analyzed and critical
There is no difference between First and Second-order thinking

2. Asking questions is essential to becoming a critical thinker

True
False

A. Gathering additional information before reaching a conclusion isn’t important for

critical thinking
True
False

4. Which of the following does a critical thinker need to do?

Base conclusions on First-order
thinking
Get a degree
Be an expert
Think open-mindedly

5. Critical thinking is necessary when writing essays, taking exams, choosing your
major and applying for a job.
True
False

Why critical thinking/mindedness is an important aspect in doing your science

Questions
Is there an argument in the story? How? Explain your answer

Did the speakers on the story listen to each other’s opinion? Why?

Are they open minded? Why?

In your own understanding and based on the story what is open mindedness?
Objectivity is a characteristic of scientific claims, methods and results.
It expresses the idea that the claims, methods and results of science
are not, or should not be influenced by particular perspectives, value
commitments, community bias or personal interests, to name a few
relevant factors. Objectivity is often considered as an ideal for scientific
inquiry, as a good reason for valuing scientific knowledge, and as the
basis of the authority of science in society (Stanford Encyclopedia of
Philosophy, 2014).

Question
Based on your understanding on the text above, how will you define objectivity? Give a
situation or example that a student show objectivity.

On this activity, answer the

following questions based on
the given situation. After
giving the answer, provide Skepticism means willing to suspend
the reason to your answer. judgment until he is sure of his result. It is an
attitude marked by a tendency to doubt what
others accept to be true until there are
enough evidence that will prove the theory.

A. Thief at sea

A Japanese ship was leaving the port and on its way to open sea. The captain went
to go oil some parts of the ship and took his ring off so it wouldn’t get damaged. He left
it on the table next to his bunk. When he returned, it was missing. He had suspected
three crew members could be guilty and asked them what they had been doing for the
ten minutes that he had been gone.
The cook said, “I was in the kitchen preparing tonight’s dinner.”
The engineer said, “I was working in the engine room making sure everything was
running smoothly.”
The seaman said, “I was on the mast correcting the flag because someone had
attached it upside down by mistake.”
The captain immediately knew who it was. How?
