What are the things that plant and animal cells have in
common

“ Animal cells and plant cells share the common

components of a nucleus, cytoplasm, mitochondria
and a cell membrane. Plant cells have three extra
components, a vacuole, chloroplast and a cell wall.

Difference between plant cell and animal cell
 A plant cell is surrounded by rigid cell wall whereas animal cell
does not have cell wall.
 Presence of a large vacuole in plant cell, which is small in animal cell.
Plant cells are larger than animal cells.
Plant cells have plastids whereas animal cells do not have plastids.
 Centrosomes are absent in plant cell whereas animal cell have
centrosomes.
Plant cells are without cilia whereas animal cells are with cilia.
 Lysosomes are very rare in plant cells. But animal cells have lysosomes.
Organelle table
ORGANELLE LOCATION DESCRIPTION FUNCTION

*Outer layer *support (grow tall)

CELL WALL Plant, fungi and bacteria but not animal *Rigid, strong, stiff *protection
*Made of cellulose *allows H2O, O2, CO2 to pass into and out of cell

*support *protection
*Plant - inside cell wall
CELL MEMBRANE *controls movement of materials in/out of cell
Both plant/animal all cells *Animal - outer layer; cholesterol
*barrier between cell and its environment
*Selectively permeable
*maintains homeostasis

*Clear, thick, jellylike material (sytosol)

CYTOPLASM Both plant/animal all cells *Organelles found inside cell membrane *supports /protects cell organelles
*Contains cytoskelon fibers

CHLOROPLAST *Green, oval usually containing chlorophyll (green

Plant, not animal *uses energy from sun to make food for the plant (photosynthesis)
pigment)

*controls cell activities

NUCLEUS both plant/animal *large, oval generally *key organelle which has the genetic material and is involved in
multiplication of cell, growth and maintenance of cell

*Vacuoles are pouches in the cell that store materials such as water, salts,
VACUOLE Plant - few/large animal - small *Fluid-filled sacs proteins, and carbohydrates, waste products and toxic waste..
*store food, water, waste (plants need to store large amounts of food)
