Shear & Bending In Beams

Shear(V) – is equal tioth summation of all upwardforces minus the downward

forces to the left of the section or it isequaltio the summationof all the downward
forces minus the upward on the right side of the section that is ∑Fv=∑Fv(right)

Bending Moment (M)- is equal tio the summation of all clockwise moments minus
counter clockwise moments of all forces to the left of section about the section on
it is equal to the summation of all counter clockwise movements mixes the
clockwise moment of all forces to the right of the section about the section that is
∑M(Left)= ∑M(Right)

Example:

1.) Determine the magnitude & sign of the V & M in the beam shown at a
distance a.) 3m , b.) 7m ,& c.) 9m from A.

ΣMB=0]
RA(8) - 16(6) - 30(3) + 10(2) - 3(11)(2.5) = 0
RA = 31 kN
∑Fv=0
31-16-30-10+Rb-3(11)=0
Rb=58kN

Shear & Moment Equations

For 3m:
V3 = 31 - 16 - 3(3) = 6 kN
V3 = 30 +10 + 3(8) -58 = 6 kN
M3 = 31(3) -16(1) - 3(3)(2.5) = 63.5 kN·m
M3 = 58(5) - 30(2) - 10(9) - 3(8)(4) = 64 kN·m

For 7m:
V7 = 31 - 16 -30 - 3(7) = -36 kN
V7 = 10 - 58 + 3(4) = -36 kN
M7 = 31(7) -16(5) - 30(2) - 3(7)(3.5) = 3.5 kN·m
M7 = -10(3) - 3(4)(2) + 58 = 4 kN·m

For 9m:
V9 = 31 - 16 - 30 - 3(9) + 58 = 16 kN
V9 = 10 + 3(2) = 16 kN
M9 = 31(9) - 16(7) - 30(4) - 3(9)(4.5) + 58(1) = -16.5 kN·m
M9 = -10(1) - 3(2)(1) = -16 kN·m

Example #2:

1.) Determine the magnitude & sign of the V & M in the beam shown at a
Section 4 m to the right.
 SHEAR AND BENDING MOMENTS EQUATIONS

The Vx and Mx on a reaction at a distance x from any arbitrary

reference point on the beam can be expressed in terms of x such
expressions are called V and M equations.

Example:
1) Determine the V and M equations for segment BC of the beam
shown using A, B, and D as the reference point.
