SIMILAR POLYGONS

Learning Competencies (Essential Competencies)

Illustrates similar polygons. (M9GE-lIIg-1)

Objectives
a. Recognize similar figures and polygons.
b. Apply the definition of proportional segments to find unknown lengths and
parts of certain polygons.
c. Apply theorems to show that the right triangles are similar.

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

When two segments are given, you can compute for the ratio of their
lengths. In fact, if the similarity of two polygons is considered, then there
is a need to check whether this ratio is constant for any pair of
corresponding sides. The polygons shown can be described as similar
polygons. Their shapes are basically the same and their corresponding sides are
proportional.

Definition

Two polygons are said to be similar if and only if their corresponding angles are
congruent and the measures of their corresponding sides are proportional.

Let us study the following examples.

EXAMPLE 1

Which of the following pairs of polygons are similar?

A B C

Only (B) shows similar polygons. The triangles in (A) cannot be similar since
one is a right triangle and the other is not. The polygons in (C) are not of the same
shape, hence are not similar.

EXAMPLE 2

Find the value of x and y in the following if the two triangles are similar.

Solution
The corresponding angles are supposedly congruent so that 𝑦 = 1350 . Also,
3 5
= Form two equivalent ratios from the given data on the figure.
4.5 𝑥

3𝑥 = (4.5)(5) Cross multiply.

3𝑥 = 22.5
3𝑥 22.5
= Divide both sides by 3 to eliminate 3 beside x on the length.
3 3

𝑥 = 7.5

EXAMPLE 3

Determine the values of x, y, and z if the two pentagons are similar.

5
0
110
𝑥 𝑦

2.5 2.5
𝑧
3
Solution
The corresponding angles are congruent so that 𝑧 = 1100 . We also obtain the
following proportions:
3 2.5 3 2.5 5(2.5) 5(2.5)
= and 5 = yielding 𝑥 = ≈ 4.17 and 𝑦 = ≈ 4.17.
5 𝑥 𝑦 3 3

In a right triangle, the altitude to the hypotenuse divides the triangles into two
triangles, which are similar to each other and to the given right triangle.

EXAMPLE 4
S
Given: Right triangle RST, with altitude 𝑆𝑈
𝑅𝑈 = 3 and 𝑇𝑈 = 6
Find: 𝑆𝑈 and 𝑆𝑅.

Solution R U T
For 𝑆𝑈:
(𝑆𝑈)2 = (𝑅𝑈)(𝑇𝑈)
(𝑆𝑈)2 = (3)(6)
(𝑆𝑈)2 = 18 Square both sides and then simplify radical on the right side
2
(𝑆𝑈) = √18
𝑆𝑈 = 3√2
For 𝑆𝑈:
(𝑆𝑅 )2 = (𝑅𝑈)(𝑅𝑇)
(𝑆𝑅 )2 = (3)(9)
(𝑆𝑅 )2 = 27 Square both sides and then simplify radical on the right side
2
(𝑆𝑅 ) = √27
𝑆𝑅 = 3√3
