Reviews of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter contains the related literature and studies after the in-depth research

done by the researcher. Those that were included in this chapter helps in familiarizing

information that are relevant and similar to the present study.

Related Literature

Among the insights that stood out is that Filipino millennial seems to be an

entrepreneurial generation. ( AuxenciaLimjap, 2015)

Millennial are stated to be an entrepreneurial generation. The millennial are an

on-demand instant gratification generation that has become emboldened by technology

and molded by world events. In this generation, it is full of productiveness meaning they

would always strive to be at the top.

According to Salvador (2014), advised that to rush and told them to focus and be

a master of their business, before venturing to start another.

Business owners must know that opening up a business doesn’t need to be rushed

for or it will lead to failure. A business must be taken seriously. One must know the

strategies that need to be mastered before venturing in stating another business. Focus

will also be needed and necessary as starting up a business must be taken thoughtfully for

it to be successful.

4
“Selling to people who actually want to hear from you is more effective than

interrupting strangers who don’t.” (Seth Godin 2017)

By selling your product, people who want your product is very effective than to

other don’t like your product. Be friendly to your customer and respect them. Don’t judge

them.

According to Drolet (2018), breaches will happen, but how you act to mitigate

them has a very real impact on the bottom line.

You need to be a trustworthy, because any failure will be happen. You need to be

strategic on how you will fix the failure you’ve done. You need to less the tension in that

failure to get a real and good impact to your customer.

According to Lawrence (2016), “With marketers using social for a range of

marketing objectives, it is important that they are offering a consistent, coherent

experience to the customer. Brands need to strive to break down the silos in their

organizations to ensure that they are realizing the potential positive impact that an

aligned, well-executed social strategy can deliver.”

The seller need to be social to achieve their marketing goals. Marketing goals is

very important to those people who consistent and give clear experience to the customer

is good. Brands can do hard working to broke the silo of their organization. The seller

need to broke it to realize the good and positive potential impact in their strategy. They

need to be a risk taker and critical thinker in their business, because any time their

competitors can attack their strategy.

5
According to Abs-cbn News (2017), the two students is now a CEO in their own

business. Like the other millennials, the siblings Ranay search their buyer on online

selling. But, according to online sellers business is not just.

In this news, selling online is familiar to the millennial. Millennials are always

using social media, because of that more of the millennials are selling products online to

get a money for their financial. Doing online business is not easy because you need to be

careful in your transaction.

Related Studies

“It was found out that most of the students agreed that they possess

entrepreneurial intentions, skills and capabilities.” (Angelica Ramos, 2014)

For this study, students of today’s generation which are the millennial are the

future entrepreneurs. Millennial have an entrepreneurial potential for starting up a

business because of their intentions. The study revealed that majority respondents have

no family business and that explain why millennial have self-confidence, courge and

focused on their objectives.

According to Duranaet al. (2014) discussed that marketing is not just about

advertising the product or service, it’s mainly about understanding the marketing

environment the company is in and learning how to use these information as an

advantage.

The researcher believed that upcoming business owner must acknowledge not

only the product that needs to be advertised but also to the marketing environment as

6
well; this is one of the reasons why some business fails at their attempt. In order to have a

well operating and successful business, one must know what to do’s and what not to.

Taking a look at the marketing environment would help those upcoming business owners

to distinguish the things they need to develop.

According in study of CajupDragusha (2016), an integrated framework of sales

strategies formulations and implementation factors is presented along the impact of

technology on each. The paper advances propositions that differentiates and integrate

sales strategy processes and recast them into a model and demonstrate how technology

affects its process. Presenting a product range for each industry sectors over its website

and provide customized customer care, services, and help design for each industry and

sector.

This study is all about a brand that connects with the market and those needs to

have a better communication between customer and seller. When you are selling your

products, you must always customized services, customer care, and help design for each

industry that you associates.

According to the research paper of Anne Wangondu (2016), in selling promotion,

customer satisfaction is always included. Product strategy is currently poor poisoned

which is it turn affects customers. There is need of evaluation to be conducted products

and services offered by a seller like social media. To help the seller to have a good and

better promotion of his/her product, it may include to be a good salestalk to get those

customer.

7
Those people who are joining to sell their products online are need to know that

every customer satisfaction is important. An industry of social media by selling any kinds

of products of a seller is an example of sales strategy because they used the importance of

social media.

The following are methods that used by the researchers in gathering data for

more justification of the study. The methods written below are used effectively.

Research Design

Research design refers to the overall strategy that researchers utilized. This

study is under a Qualitative Method because it is focuses on literatures and it does not

include formulas to gather data. It goes under this kind of method because the researchers

wanted to find out the correlation of their chosen topic with respect their respondents.

Additionally, it is non-experimental type of research because it does not need

experiments to gather data nor medical purposes research. Finally, they also used cross-

sectional method of collecting data because they took their interview only for once and

does not go back again in the same faces on the next day of their interview.

five respondents whose customers of every Eateries they walked in to fulfill the required

numbers of respondents with 25 only.

26
Research Instrument

Subsequently, after the confirmation of the questionnaires, the researchers’

used interview as their instrument to gather data. The interview is composed of

interviewer who is he the researchers that interrogates the interviewee, who, is the

respondent. Researchers used open ended questions to answer the given questions.

Research Procedure

In able to fulfill the research, the researchers were asked to make their survey

questionnaires which will their instrument to gather data. After they made their survey

questionnaire, they submitted it to their teachers for the correction of grammars but it

took only a day for the instructor to check their questionnaire and gave it back. Before the

researchers conduct their study, their teacher asked them to choose a number of

respondents between 25-30 and they free to choose what they want. For the conveniency,

they chose only 25 respondents. A day passed by, they started to conduct an interview.

According to Abrugar(2013) “There are many reasons why Filipinos don’t start a

business, and one of these reasons in the lack of effective and efficient implementations of

laws that were supposed to promote entrepreneurship in the Philippines.”

According to Abrugar, in 2013 most of the reasons why people do not want to

build a business is the lack of effective and efficient implementations of laws which

declare or introduce entrepreneurship in the Philippines.

According to Natividad (2015) “Going down your own path as an entrepreneur

will always involve capital and investments.”

According to Natividad year 2015 is the goal you will or the path you are going to

become as an entrepreneur you should always know if that will be have the capital and

business investment you if you will build a business. You cannot get started without

capital or enough money to do business even a sari-sari store.

According to Villavicencio(2018) “Entrepreneur focused on relationship -building

and caring for employees welfare.”

According to Villavicencio year 2015 it is better to have a relationship with the

customer ,to find out what they really need and if there is not enough of them your skills

as a person who is working.

According to Legaspi(2013) “Small enterprises obtained higher appreciation

about the use of statement of cash flow analysis and operating budgets while financial

40
budgets ,capital budgeting decisions, managing customer’s relationship and operating

budgets were the very useful tools for the medium enterprises.”

According to Legaspi year 2013 small businesses need to know how to handle

and rotate money because if you do not know it and you cannot do it there has a

possibility that your business will be built soon enough. And if you start with a little you

should know the decision once it has problems with your business.

According to Kao & Liang (2013) “small business as one that is owned

independently. It is not a subsidiary of a ledger firm and managed by its owner with little

or no delegation of decision -making to employees.

According to Kao & Liang year 2013 its is managed by the owner but without

delegacy of decision -making for the employees.

According to Hossain (2015) “This study is objective to examine the current

research on open innovation in small and medium size enterprises to integrate empirical

findings and to point out the future research agenda ,and findings suggest that studies are

mostly performed based on panel data and only several studies include sophisticated

statistical analysis.”

have a improvement on their business. They must creating new ideas on their small

business and they must point out their future agenda to performed based on the panel data

and only several studies include sophisticated statistical analysis.

41

risks ,attribute a value and a priority scale ,design actions and mechanism to minimize

risk and continuously monitor them are essential to guarantee companies survival and

create sustainable value this is especially true for small business that are most exposed to

harmful effects of the risks due to limited resources and structural features.

According to Verbano and Venturini year 2013 you must identify the risk and

have a good quality or attribute the value and must monitor the essential guarantee

companies or the small business the small and medium size of business have a very

harmful risk effect.

According to Ogbe(2017) “The role small business play in the process of

economic development and ofcourse poverty reduction.”

According to Ogbe year 2017 in terms of business its always have a poverty and

p you must take a risk and also you must have a knowledge on it.

CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction

Having a job is very important in every people’s life. Money is one of our needs

and people cannot have money by just sitting or lying in bed, waiting for some miracle to

happen. Of course people need a job if they want to have money. Some employee is

choosing their job base on the amount of their salary, because they want to live, and

living means providing for its needs and people needed enough money for that. That is

why having a job is one of the most important things that people need and must have. But

there are some employees doing their job because they want it, they love the job, or they

love to do all the task related to their job. That is why people all over the world is aiming

to get a good job.

Job satisfaction, why it is important as an employee? Isn’t it enough that people

are gaining money by having a job? Why it is important for peopleto be satisfied in their

job? In our society today, money is very important because everything has a price,

especially our daily needs like foods, shelter, medicine, etc. people can’t deny the fact

that money is very important, without money people can’t provide their own needs.

People will suffer if they cannot even provide for their own needs, but the question is

thus money make a person happy? Especially employees thus money make them happy?

Yes, you have a job a good job to be precise with a high salary but are you happy with

that job? Is that kind of job what you really want? Did that job you have satisfies you?

Being satisfied in your job is very important because it only means that you are happy

72
and enjoying the kind of job you have, money is not the main reason why people choose

that job or apply in a certain position in a company even if they know that they will not

going to be happy and they will not enjoy doing the job.

We also need to know the how thus job satisfaction affects our job performance,

because when you go to find a job, most of the people go for how high the amount of

salary is and if it can support their living, but employees also need to enjoy the job or

career that they choose because this makes them perform their job well. Now thus job

satisfaction really affects employee’s performance?

employee.

75
CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and studies search by the researchers.

This will also provide the readers with a general overview about the factors that affect job

satisfaction of the employees.

RELATED LITERATURE

According to Andrew Brin, “Job satisfaction is the amount of pleasure or

contentment associated with a job. If you like your job intensely, you will experience

high job satisfaction. If you dislike your job intensely, you will experience job

dissatisfaction.”

As an employee, if you enjoy what you do, then you will find pleasure and

contentment in your job. This shows that you are satisfied with your job. But if you don’t

like your joband it irritates you doing your job then you are not satisfied with that job.

Being satisfied with your job is important because if you are satisfied with your job you

will perform well in doing your job and you will be contented in what you are getting

from your job.

“The workplace environment plays a crucial role for the employees. Nowadays

employees may have a large number working alternatives, then the environment in the

workplace becomes a critical factor for accepting and/or keeping the jobs. The quality of

environment in the workplace maysimplydetermine the level of employee motivation,

76
subsequent performance and productivity.”(Journal of Business, Economics & Finance

Vol.1 2012 as cited in Jo Turno)

The workplace environment plays an important role in the level of job satisfaction

of an employee. The quality of an environment of a workplace contribute to the

productivity and job performance of an employee, how working environment can affect

their desire and motivation to learn new skills.

Harputlu, 2014 (as cited in Unutmaz Seda, 2014) states that “There is no

universally accepted definition of employee satisfaction, but there are many definitions of

job satisfaction in the literature. The reason is that job satisfaction means different things

to different people, since people are affected byvariousdifferent factors including

personal characteristics, needs, values, feelings and expectancies. Also, it varies from

organization to organization, since job satisfaction influencing factors such as working

environment, job characteristic, opportunities for employees and working environment

differ according to organization.”

People’s definition of job satisfaction depends on the organization they were in.

They have different understanding about job satisfaction that is influenced by different

factorsmentioned. There are different meanings of job satisfaction, it can be define as

concerning one’s feeling or state of mind related with work and an employee’s positive

attitude towards the company, co-workers and the job.

“There are some indicators they say millennials have not found their place at

work yet as they continue to move from one company to another. Most also aren’t happy

77
with the salary they receive” (JobStreet.com Philippine Country Manager Philip Gioca,

2015)

The salary received by employees affect their job satisfaction. Salary is essential

in order for people to survive and a great proportion of people rely on the money they get

from their jobs. Salary is one of the important factors when people are looking for a job

but there is also other important aspect that play vital roles and have more significance

than money. Most millennials have not found the right job for them that can satisfy

them. That is why they have move from one company to another. Most of them are not

happy about the salary they receive, which we can say that, because of this, most of the

employees are not satisfied enough with their job.It can affect their performance when

they are not happy on what theydo and what theyreceive.

70 percent of Filipino employees are happy with their jobs, which leaves only 30

percent who consider unhappy. (JobStreet.com Philippines, 2015). When asked about

why they are satisfied with their jobs, 64 percent of respondents claim to be happy with

salary, company benefits & incentives they are provided with; job role is second at 62

percent, and career growth and the company’s learning & development programs come in

third at 60 percent. (JobStreet.com Philippines, 2015)

JobStreet.com Philippines asked random employee if they are happy with their

job 70 percent of them said they are happy and 30 percent of them said they are not

happy. They asked them the reason why they are happy 64 percent of them said that it is

because of the salary that they are receiving, incentives and the company benefits they

78
are getting. Which concluded that if the company does not give a good salary, incentives

and benefits to the employee, the employee will not be satisfied with their job.

For Filipinos, “salary, company benefits and incentives” topped the reasons for

employees’ satisfaction (64 percent); followed by “job role” (62 percent); “learning and

development programs, and career growth” (60 percent); “working environment, culture,

and work-life balance” (59 percent); and “relationship with colleagues and superior” (56

percent). (Inquirer.net, 2015)

Salary, company’s benefits and incentives ranked first as the reasons for job

satisfaction, second is job role followed by learning and development programs, and

career growth, next is relationship with colleagues and superior. It shows that there are a

lot of things that the company shall provide in order to the employee to be satisfied. All

of this affects the job satisfaction of the employee because those things make them work

harderto reach the company’s goal.

RELATED STUDIES

Based on Rukh Lala et al., (2015) study “Job satisfaction of employees was

significantly affected by demographic, financial and non-financial factors. Employees

who are older than 50 years, with greater experience, and in higher management positions

were more satisfied with pay, promotion, work stress, work condition and working

environment. The employees’ departments did not play any significant role in affecting

satisfaction levels.”

Employees job satisfaction has nothing to do with the departments they were in.

For those whose ages range from 50 and above they are happy with theirsalaries,

79
promotions, working environments and working conditions, all of these plays a role in

the job satisfaction of the employees and this affect the level of satisfaction of the

employees. It shows that employee is satisfied with their job if the company is giving

them good salary and making them work in a workplace where the environment is

pleasant and will not be a burden for them while they are working.

Based on Rahman et al., (2017) study, “The job satisfaction levels of full-time

direct sales agents of Takāful and insurance industry matter and have higher levels of job

satisfaction associated with greater ranked efficiency, effectiveness, productivity and

profitability, increases in job satisfaction have been linked to more positive work

environments, improved culture, higher rate of worker retention, and finally with

institutions identified as “Great Places to Work For”. The importance of job satisfaction

in the insurance industry was the motivation for this examination of Herzberg’s two-

factor theory with the moderating effects of Shari’ah perception.”

Based on Rahman study both “motivators” and “hygiene factors” in Herberg’s

model are significant with job satisfaction. Shari’ah perception moderates the relationship

in the model, both the factors become insignificant. The result of their study suggests that

there are opportunities for organizational leadership to improve employee levels of

Shari’ah perception, which can enhance the performance of the organization.

Based on the results of the study of Angeles, et al., (2015) they arrived at the

following conclusions: (1) Employees of Ajinomoto Philippines Corporation are satisfied

on the way they were being handled by the management. Respondents were satisfied on

working condition, equipment, interpersonal relationship, motivation, and present job. (2)

80
Majority of the employees were given good rating by the station manager in their job

performance. (3) There is no significant relationship between job satisfaction and

performance of Ajinomoto employees. Majority of the employees are working in the

company for more than five years and above; therefore, they are happy with their

supervisors, co-workers and are family oriented.

There should be a good relationship and trust between the management and the

employees. The feeling of being trust by the company is a source of motivation. It helps

the workplace to feel that they are part of the team or a family, With the cooperation and

trust, performance in the workplace will increase and will lead to the success of the

company. This thing will help the employees to work harder for the success of the

company.

Based on the study conducted byKadtong et al., (2013), it is concluded that the

teachers of Cotabato City Philippines imply that31-40 age bracket majority are females.

Many of them earned college degree and further master’s unit. Therefore, if the teachers

contented with their job, they will develop and maintain high level of performance.

Teaching learning process make more efficient and effective that couldproduce highest

competitive learners. The age, highest educational attainments and length of service were

significant to the job satisfaction. Sex and civil status were noted that there is significant

difference to job satisfaction.

The job satisfaction of the employees is connected totheir job performance, if an

employee is satisfied with their job, they will perform better in their job, they will

produce good quality of performance. Theeffectiveness of employees considered to be

81
associated with its satisfaction towards its job. If you are satisfied with your job, you will

do your jobwell. If you are not satisfied, it will show your poor performance in your job.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methods to be used in the study. It also describes the

subjects of the study, the instruments used, the procedure of data gathering, and the

statistical treatment of the data. This section specifies what method of research will be

used – descriptive, correlational, experimental, or documentary analysis.

Research Design

The researchers use the Qualitative Research method wherein the researchers

analyze the qualitative data collected through interviews, observations or communication

with respondents. Under Qualitative Method, the researchers use the technique Grounded

Theory wherein the researchers generate and develop a theory from the data they

collected. The researchers also use Descriptive Research Method wherein the researchers

describe situations. Under the Descriptive Method, the Survey Method, respondents

answer questions administered through interviews or questionnaires. After the

respondents answer the questions, researchers describe the responses given.

Research Respondents

The respondents of the study are the employees of Saint Joseph Academy of

Dasmariñas, Inc. This contains 25-30 totals of respondents.

Research Instrumentation

The instrument that the researchers use to collect data is the Interview

Questionnaire. The researchers provide a questionnaire that contains the questions that

83
they’re to ask to the respondents for them to get the answer they want to have. The

researchers will also conduct an interview to get the exact answer for the Factors

Affecting the Job Satisfaction of the Employees.

Research Procedure

The researchers came up with their research topic, then from that topic they made

their research title and after that the researchers made their statement of the problem. The

researchers also cite online for related literatures and studies regarding to their topic. This

study is intended to collect data about the Factors Affecting the Job Satisfaction of the

Employees and the researchers also think of several questions that will answer their

statement of the problem and will also be their interview questions.

Review of Related literature and Studies

This Chapter presents the review of what Strategies you will use to have a

successful business. This chapter support the concepts and backgrounds in the previous

Chapter.

Related Literature

The literature review revealed that strategic planning is a popular and widespread

practicein both and private and public sectors. It is leadership and management tool that

has been successfully used for decades to help organization better prepare literature for

the future and improve long term performance. There is increased recognition that

strategic planning is not enough by itself and that too many good strategic plans have

been left to gather dust. Effective leadership is required to both develop and implement

strategic plans. This has led to the concept of “Strategic Management” which includes the

implementations and ongoing management strategic plans not just their development.

As would be expected, there is significant amount of literature on the subject of strategic

planning in general, particularly in the private sector. Strategic Planning has a long

history in organization. Is origins are often thought to have been military, were there was

a need to develop comprehensive, long term strategies to win a war as opposed to the

shorter term, more limited tactical planning needed to win battles or skirmishes. An early

99
form of strategic planning, the SWOT analysis (STRENGTHS, WEAKNESSES ,

OPPORTUNITIES AND THREATS.),

The practices of strategic plan achieve considerable Populary in private sector

organization in 1960’s and 1970’s. In the 1980’s it became more and more prevalent in

the public and non profit sectors. Unlike other management fads that have quickly

disappeared, strategic planning is a management technique or practices that has

demonstrate staying power and broad usage across a variety of organization In both the

private and public sectors. In our topic In business needs Strategic plan because in this

literature it explain how important it is.The business. “He knows the local government

authorities, he knows the customers. Knowing the people inthe community creates lots of

advantages,” Lim simply describes that buying a franchise is acquiring a trusted brand

with a consistent quality. Itprovides assurance to customers that they would be getting the

same value whenever they purchasethat brand. Franchising also thrives amid challenging

times. Studies show that franchising grows evenfaster during times of recession as it also

remains robust despite the odds. Franchising also has a 90-percent success rate compared

to traditional retail (or your own business) which has only 25-percentsuccess rate after 10

years of operation.

thus spared of the difficulties of having to start up their own, which is more risky and

difficult route. Franchises are likeplug-and-play Businesses that enable entrepreneurs to

start their business right from the first day of operations.“Franchises in the country have

an estimated 95% success rate on the initial year of operation, a recentstudysaid ,”

Franchising is something tangible people control during crisis”. Association of

FilipinoFranchisers Inc. (AFFI) Public Relations Officer and Binibining owner Richard

100
Sanz said. Juan saidapplications for franchises have also increased this year despite the

economic downtown.According to Philippine Franchise Association chair and Fran corp

Philippines chief executive Algeria Limjoco, “ the industry remained optimistic despite

the overall doom -and-gloom situation, as the franchising business was not likely to be as

hard hit as other industries”. Despite the economic crisis, the local franchising industry

expands and even extends its reach to foreign markets. The franchisingindustry, in fact,

could provide returning overseas Filipino workers and even retrenched workers

theopportunity to remain productive and generate much needed-income. “Franchising

does well in goodtimes, and even bettering challenging times.” She said. With our young

and large population whose need are fully matched by the products and services of the

highly creative members of the PFA, market demand will remain up and the economy

can post decent growth,” she added. According to Robert Trota, president of the

Philippine franchisers association says the key to this first world vision was “a large

armada of entrepreneurs rather than any army of our labor force staying as employees for

life.” Fourteen years after a group of small retailers paved the way for making franchising

an Institution in the Philippines, franchisers are looking at this business approach than

important pushalong what the Arroyo administration describes as the road to becoming

the first world country. Trota, who is also president of Max’s franchising Inc. that owns

the Max’s chicken, said franchising provides theway for people to put up a business with

capital us low as P300,000 or even P150,000.“Not only has that, franchising allowed

(neophyte) entrepreneurs access to business models that haveproven track records,” he

said. “That is why they observed a 90- percent success rate among out of franchises in

the country.”

101
A marketing oriented firm (also called the marketing concept, or consumer focus)is one

that allows the wants and needs of customers and potential customers to drive all the

firm's strategic decisions. The firm's corporate culture is systematically committed to

creating customer value. In order to determine customer wants, the company usually

needs to conduct marketing research. The marketer expects that this process, if done

correctly, will provide the company with a sustainable competitive advantage. This

consumer focus can be seen as a process that involves three steps. First customer want are

researched, then the information is disseminated throughout the firm and products are

developed, then finally customer satisfaction is monitored and adjustments made if

necessary. A marketing oriented firm will typically show the following characteristics:

1. Extensive use of marketing research

2. Broad product lines

3. Emphasis on a product's benefits to customers rather than on product attributes

4. Use of product innovation techniques

5. The offering of ancillary services like credit availability, delivery, installation,

and warranty.

"Marketing orientation," may actually encompass several different approaches to the

Strategic alignment of the organization with the marketing environment. This study

Develops a marketing orientation tools for the enterprises to have a value enhancement in

their businesses. Specifically, firms can decide to focus primarily on either Competitors

or customers as the situation dictates, or perhaps attempt the difficult task of

102
simultaneously monitoring both with equal emphasis. The proposed matrix includes four

distinct approaches to market orientation: "customer preoccupied," "marketing warriors,"

"strategically integrated,"

Firms which emphasize customer-focused intelligence gathering activities at the expense

of competitor information may be classified as "customer preoccupied". Because the

marketing concept promotes putting the interests of customers first, many researchers

consider a customer-focus to be the most fundamental aspect of market orientation.

Because the marketing concept encourages a business to be forward looking, a customer-

focused business is likely to be more interested in long-term business success as opposed

to short-term profits.

The 2013 National Restaurant Industry Survey represents the first national

employer survey of work and human resource management in the Restaurant Industry. It

documents the range of practices adopted employers and how those practices affect

turnover and employment stability problems that are endemic across the industry They

examined management practices and outcomes in four customer segments fine up scale

dining & casual fine dining& moderately priced family restaurants andfast food ' (quick

service restaurants) high levels of employee turn over are problematic in restaurants

serving all four customer segments leading to higher employee costs and lower service

quality and organizational performance In fact and the survey data demonstrates that

better human resource practices can reduce employee turn over almost by half They

surveyed restaurants in the 33 largest metropolitan areas of the country and where wages

103
and the cost of living are likely to be higher than in smaller cities and towns and where

higher competition is likely to drive employers to invest more in employeesin order to

compete more effectively on quality and service. Over half of these restaurants are

located in states with tipped and non-tipped minimum wages and rates that are

considerably higher than the federal minimum rates Thus & the wages & human resource

practices and turnover reported by managers in this sample should represent somewhat

better conditions than those found in a nationally representative study Nonetheless and

even in this sample and the proportion of restaurants that adopt better human resource

HR. practices and invest in the workforce is modest! Several findings are

noteworthy.According to National Survey and the first national employersurvey of work

and human resource management in the U.S restaurant industry and they conducted a

telephone survey of managers in 1,150 restaurant establishments across the country

Managers in each workplace provided information on the types of customers served and

restaurant characteristics! They reported the number and types of employees providing

front and back of the house services. For this report and front of house employees

includeservers and Bartenders and hosts, bussers, runners bar backs and cashiers back-

of-the-house employees include line cooks and prepcooks and dishwashers and potters

for each of these groups and managers reported on their human resource practices

includingstaffing and selection and training and developmentcompensation and the

organization of work Performance outcomes such asturnover and employment tenure

were also addressed In this report and we provide an overview of the restaurantsincluded

in our study as well as our findings regarding the use of different management practices

and their relationship to key outcomes According to Human Resource Management for

104
thehospitality and tourism industries written by Dennis Nickson and there are arguments

for Best fit advocate a close fit Between competitive strategies and Human Resource

Management and those in favor of best practice approaches to HRM suggest that there is

a universal “one Best way” to manage people By adopting a Best practiceapproach it is

argued that organizations will see enhancedcommitment from employees leading to

improved organizational performance and higher levels of service quality and

ultimatelyincreased productivity and profitability usually couched in terms of bundles the

HRM practices that are offered in support of a highcommitment and performance model

are generally fairly consistent For example and Redman and Matthews -1889. outline a

range of HR practices which are suggested as being important to organizationalstrategies

aimed at securing high, quality service.
