Capacity utilization of conventional

compressors
Studies show that the max. output is only required during peak times, and that on the
average, most compressors (55 – 200 kW) only use up to 50 - 70% of capacity.

Advantage of variable speed

control with SCD technology

Advantages at a glance:
• energy-saving
• increased service life
• decreased maintenance costs
• improved availability
• decreased idling times
You want to save energy?
• nearly constant mains pressure
A variable-speed compressor
saves you electrical energy.
The regulation of the engine speed causes
the compressor to delivery only as much
compressed air as currently needed.
The operating pressure always remains
constant.
ALLEGRO 30 - 260

Advantages of SCD technology

- constant mains pressure -
The ALLEGRO compressors run at a constant operating pressure ( p  0.1 bar),
Since high pressure = high energy, this means an enormous energy-saving
potential.
1 bar increased pressure  6 – 8 % increased energy consumption

• The ALLEGRO compressor maintains a constant pressure by variating the

output.
• There is no longer any setting of on/off pressure.

SCD technology 0%

At 100% air requirement, the conventional compressor as well as the variable-speed

compressor both run at full capacity.
If the requirement should sink, the conventional compressor switches to load/idling control.
The driving motor begins its switching cycle, taking into account the preset after-run time.
The ALLEGRO series varies its speed and thus adapts its output downwards exactly to the
current requirement. The result:
• no expensive idling times (approx. 25% of full capacity)
• no switching cycle, i.e. less mechanical load on the structural components
ALLEGRO 30 - 260

Advantages of the SCD technology

- avoidance of idling times -
Example: Average capacity utilization ( 70%) of all compressors in the 55 - 200 kW range
Example: 70% capacity utilization

This means that if a conventional compressor is run at 70% of its maximum capacity, then
the compressor is in idle operation mode up to 30% of the time, while consuming about a
fourth of the energy compared to full capacity operation. This is an unnecessary waste of
energy. The ALLEGRO compressor masters this situation by setting the speed of the
compression element to exactly the speed necessary to produce the required volumetric
flow. At the same time, the SCD technology of the drive system ensures that only that power
is consumed which is respectively required to produce the actual speed. This way the
ALLEGRO compressor is able to decisively reduce energy costs in operation at 70% of full
capacity.
ALLEGRO 30 - 260

Advantages of the SCD technology

- avoidance of idling times -

Calculation example ALLEGRO 100 and ALLEGRO 40:

40 :

ALLEGRO 30 - 260

SCD frequency converter

A possibility of getting around the “disadvantage” of a 3-phase AC power
supply (constant current / constant frequency) is to use a frequency converter.

What happens in a frequency converter compared to a star-delta power supply?

from mains • current constant from mains

• current constant
(3-phase AC) • frequency constant A • frequency constant
(3-phase AC)

B
• current =

• cos total system 0 – 150Hz
( 0.87 bei 100 % • cos total system
 0.70 bei 50 %) ( 0.95 = constant)
Disadvantages:
• high apparent power
• high startup power requirement (that costs
money)
ALLEGRO 30 - 260

Conversion into DC current (power rectifier)

Air Guide Intake

ALLEGRO 30 - 260

Air Guide Intake

The cooling air is guided by the separate ventilator from the top of the
compressor through the whole unit.
• Cool intake air with high density for an optimum
of efficiency
• Air guide intake with overpressure inside the
compressor housing
• Low temperatures inside the compressor
• Protection of the single components
• spacious layout of the air guide intake results in
low compressed air outlet temperatures of about
8 – 10°C above inlet temperature
• efficient cooling and placing the drive motor
direct into the cooling mainstream results in a
winding temperature below 80°C.
ALLEGRO 30 - 260

Generously sized coolers

• Minimum pressure drop
=> high energy saving
• Less risk of cooler blocking
• Low compressed air discharge temperature
(t approx. 8 - 10°C above ambient)
=> less investment and operating
costs
for dryers and downstream equipment
