Cayuga County
In Cayuga County, each municipal
government, from the county down
to each city, town and village, has
a highway department 34 in all.
These governments spent nearly
$30 million in 2010 to maintain 2,715
lane miles of roadway. Attempting
to capitalize on efficiencies, some
county and town leaders in Cayuga
County are working to develop a plan
to phase out the County Highway
Department and transfer its work to
the towns.

**Westchester County had a large capital expenditure in 2009, inflating its per mile expenditure totals.
*In some instances, municipalities have not reported financial data to the Office of the State Comptroller prior to
publication. While most of the missing data is from small towns or villages, missing data from Columbia County in
the Capital Region and the City of Ithaca in Tompkins County in the Southern Tier could have a significant effect on
per mile calculations.

**Hamilton County has the highest per capita cost per lane mile at $1,592. However, this benchmark may be
misleading due to the large number of seasonal residents who are not factored into Hamilton Countys population.
