What is an Informative Essay?
The purpose of an informative essay is to educate others on a certain topic. Typically,

these essays will answer one of the five WH’s questions: who, what, where, when, and why.
This essay may also answer the question "how," indicating how to do something. Informative
essays must never express one’s opinion or try to convince others to take a certain action or
stance.
Structure of an Informative Essay

The basic structure of an informative essay is very simple. It needs to have a
beginning, middle, and end. These are known more formally as the introduction, body, and
conclusion, respectively.
 The beginning, also known as the introduction, is your opportunity to present
your thesis statement and grab the attention of the reader. Your thesis statement must
be one sentence, making it very clear what the reader will be informed about.
 The middle, also known as the body, is your opportunity to expound upon the thesis
statement and grab the attention of the audience with solid facts, statistics, statements,
and other supporting details
 The end, commonly known as the conclusion, is your opportunity to summarize the
essay in a paragraph or two. It should spur the reader to want to learn more about the
topic. End on a high note, encouraging your readers to learn more or contemplate the
most important elements of your essay. You may even pose a rhetorical question.

5 Types of Informative Essay Structures
1. Description- essay development through this structure is like painting a verbal picture. This
means creating impressions and images through words that appeal to the reader’s senses.
2. Sequence/Instruction/Process
Sequential instructions (Step 1, Step 2, Step 3)
Chronological events - when students read or write a text with this structure, order is the key.
Texts that use this format usually don't present any event or instruction out of order, as doing
so would make its directions more difficult to follow.
3. Cause/Effect - this text structure explains causes and effects. Sounds pretty simple! But
works that use this structure can become complex when an effect has multiple causes (or vice
versa).
4. Compare/Contrast - this text structure is one of the most useful and common methods of
comparing or organizing ideas and information. Comparison means pointing out similarities
while contrast means giving differences.
5. Problem/Solution
This text structure involves two parts:
1. The author identifies a problem.
2. The author details a solution to this problem.
