Introductory Message

Welcome to Mathematics 10!

The Mathematics Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the


collaborative efforts of the Schools Division of Guimaras and DepEd
Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through the Curriculum and
Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to guide
the learning facilitators (teachers, parents, and responsible adults) in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic
Education Curriculum.

The Mathematics Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed


instructional materials aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing
activities at their own pace and time using the contextualized resources
in the community. This will also assist the learners in acquiring the
lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Mathematics 10 Learning Activity Sheet will help you facilitate


the teaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential
Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face
encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to the
learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Mathematics 10 Learning Activity Sheet is developed to


help you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning
material provides you with meaningful and engaging activities for
independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and
understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the
assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed
schedule.

I. Learning Competency with Code
Illustrate the following measures of position: quartiles, deciles, and
percentiles (M10SP-IVa-1)
II. Background Information for Learners
You have already learned illustrating measures of position of
ungrouped data. In this lesson you are expected to illustrate the
measures of position of grouped data: quartiles, deciles, and
percentiles.
In a group data, quartiles, deciles, and percentiles can
be illustrated by using frequency distribution.
The following concepts will help you understand in
illustrating the measures of position of grouped data.
 Class Interval – is the numerical width of any class
in a distinct distribution. It is the difference
between the upper class limit and the lower class
limit.
 Upper class limit – is the highest value of the class
interval.
 Lower class limit – is the lowest value of the class
interval.
 Frequency – is the number of times a particular
value appears in a set of data.
 Cumulative frequency – is calculated by adding
each frequency from the frequency table to the
sum of the preceding values. The last value is
always equal to the total number of observations.
 Lower boundary – is the midpoint of the upper limit
and the lower limit of every succeeding class
interval.
Example:
The scores of 20 Grade 10 – Talisay learners in a 40-
item Test in Mathematics are given in a Frequency
Distribution below.
Illustrate the following measures of position: Q1, D5 and P80.

A. To illustrate Q1.
Formula to find the Qk class:

This means we need to find the class interval where the 5th score is
contained
Note the 3rd – 6th scores belong to the class interval: 23-25.
Therefore, the 5th score is also within the class interval.
The Q1 class is class interval 23 – 25.

B. To illustrate D5:
Formula to find the Dk class:

N = total frequency
k = nth Decile, where n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,
8, and 9

This means we need to find the class interval where the 10th score is
contained.
Note that the 7th - 11th scores belong to the class interval: 26-28.
Therefore, the 10th score is also within the class interval.
The D5 class is class interval 26 – 28.

C. To illustrate P80:
Formula to find the P80 class:

Solution:

This means we need to find the class interval where the 16th score is
contained.

Note that the 16th scores belong to the class interval: 26-28.
Therefore, the 16th score is also within the class interval.
The P80 class is class interval 29 – 31.
