ROOF, ALSO
CALLED HIPPED ROOF, ROOF THAT SLOPES UPWARD FROM ALL SIDES OF A
STRUCTURE, HAVING NO VERTICAL ENDS. THE HIP IS THE EXTERNAL
ANGLE AT WHICH ADJACENT SLOPING SIDES OF A ROOF MEET. THE DEGREE
OF SUCH AN ANGLE IS REFERRED TO AS THE HIP BEVEL.
THE CROSS-HIP ROOF IS ONE OF THE MORE POPULAR VARIANTS OF THE HIP
ROOF. CROSS HIPS ARE LAID OUT PERPENDICULARLY OVER L-SHAPED
BUILDINGS, AND THEIR CONSTRUCTION CAN BE LIKENED TO BRINGING
TWO HIP ROOF BUILDINGS TOGETHER. THE SEAM FORMS THE VALLEY OR
THE CROSS-HIPPED ROOF.
BROKEN HIP AND VALLEY - A BROKEN HIP AND VALLEY ROOF IS THE SAME
AS A HIP AND VALLEY ROOF, EXCEPT THAT THE ROOF IS NOT LEVEL - SOME
RIDGES AND POINTS ARE HIGHER THAN OTHERS. BELCOTE - THE
BELCOTE HIP ROOF HAS A VERANDAH ATTACHED THAT RUNS ALL THE
WAY AROUND ITS PERIMETER.

DOUBLE SLOPE ON ALL FOUR SIDES, THE LOWER SLOPE BEING LESS STEEP
THAN THE UPPER SLOPE; OFTEN EXTENDS OVER AN OPEN-SIDED RAISED
PORCH TO PROVIDE EXCELLENT SHADE FOR THE HOUSE AND PROTECTION
AGAINST RAIN.
A GAMBREL ROOF IS A SYMMETRICAL TWO-SIDED ROOF IN WHICH EACH
SIDE HAS TWO SLOPES, ONE STEEPER AND ONE SHALLOWER. THINK OF A
TYPICAL BARN ROOF, THE MOST COMMON GAMBREL ROOF MOST PEOPLE
SEE.

ROOF I SA
TYPE OF HIP ROOF THAT HAS FOUR SIDES THAT ARE ALL TRIANGLE SHAPED
AND ALL SLOPE DOWNWARD. THEY ARE BUILT ONTO A SQUARE OR
RECTANGULAR FRAME. PYRAMID ROOFS ARE A POPULAR CHOICE FOR A
SHED, GAZEBOS, AND SUMMERHOUSES AS THEY ARE A MODERN EYE-
CATCHER AND DEFINITELY STAND
OUT FROM OTHER ROOF TYPES.
GABLED ROOFS ARE THE KIND YOUNG CHILDREN TYPICALLY DRAW. THEY
HAVE TWO SLOPING SIDES THAT COME TOGETHER AT A RIDGE, CREATING
END WALLS WITH A TRIANGULAR EXTENSION, CALLED A GABLE, AT THE
TOP.
BOX
GABLE
ROOFS HAVE A TRIANGULAR EXTENSION AT EACH END OF THE HOUSE,
WITH THE ROOF SECTION BOXED AT THE END. THIS DESIGN IS EXTREMELY
SIMILAR TO THE STANDARD GABLE ROOF, BUT DISTINGUISHES THE
TRIANGULAR SECTION OF THE DESIGN MORE.
A JER
KINHEAD ROOF IS A
GABLE ROOF ON WHICH THE PEAKS OF THE GABLE ENDS ARE CLIPPED OFF
WITH WHAT RESEMBLES A HIP ROOF. THE ADVANTAGE OF THIS STYLE IS
THAT THE CLIPPING STREAMLINES THE PEAK OF THE GABLE ROOF, WHICH
CAN OTHERWISE BE HIGHLY STRESSED IN WIND, THUS REDUCING THE
POTENTIAL WIND DAMAGE.
A CROSS GABLE ROOF CONSISTS OF TWO OR MORE GABLE ROOFLINES THAT
INTERSECT AT AN ANGLE, MOST OFTEN WITH THE TWO RIDGES PLACED
PERPENDICULAR TO ONE ANOTHER. HOUSES WITH THIS DESIGN WILL
OFTEN HAVE A MORE COMPLEX LAYOUT DUE TO THE CHANGE IN SHAPE
A CROSS GABLE ROOF WILL HAVE ON THE HOUSE'S STRUCTURE.
SKILLION
ROOFS DIFFER FROM OTHER STANDARD ROOFS IN THAT THEY ONLY HAVE
A SINGLE FLAT SURFACE, AS OPPOSED TO HAVING TWO SLOPING SIDES
WHICH MEET IN A RIDGE OR PEAK IN THE CENTRE OF A BUILDING.
THE SKILLION ROOF HAS A SIGNIFICANTLY STEEPER AND MORE
NOTICEABLE PITCH.
A CLERESTORY ROOF IS A ROOF WITH A VERTICAL WALL WHICH SITS
BETWEEN THE TWO SLOPING SIDES, WHICH FEATURES A ROW OF WINDOWS
(OR ONE LONG, CONTINUOUS WINDOW). THE CLERESTORY ROOF CAN BE
SYMMETRICAL, WITH A HIPPED OR GABLE-TYPE DESIGN, OR ELSE IT CAN BE
ASYMMETRICAL, RESEMBLING SOMETHING CLOSER TO A SKILLION ROOF.

BARRIER
THAT IS AN EXTENSION OF THE WALL AT THE EDGE OF A ROOF, TERRACE,
BALCONY, WALKWAY OR OTHER STRUCTURE. PARAPETS WERE
ORIGINALLY USED TO DEFEND BUILDINGS FROM MILITARY ATTACK, BUT
TODAY THEY ARE PRIMARILY USED AS GUARD RAILS AND TO PREVENT THE
SPREAD OF FIRES.
CURVED
ROOFS ARE A FAIRLY NEW ROOF DESIGN THAT FOCUSES ON AESTHETICS
MORE THAN DURABILITY. A CURVED ROOF IS ESSENTIALLY A ROOF THAT
HAS A CURVED SHED-STYLE SHAPE. THE STYLE IS PERFECT FOR THOSE
CUSTOMERS THAT WISH TO STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD. CURVED
ROOFS LOOK GREAT ON STABLES, HOMES, COTTAGES AND EVEN GARAGES.

ROOF IS
A ROOF WHICH IS ALMOST LEVEL IN CONTRAST TO THE MANY TYPES OF
SLOPED ROOFS. THE SLOPE OF A ROOF IS PROPERLY KNOWN AS ITS PITCH
AND FLAT ROOFS HAVE UP TO APPROXIMATELY 10°. FLAT ROOFS ARE AN
ANCIENT FORM MOSTLY USED IN ARID CLIMATES AND ALLOW
THE ROOF SPACE TO BE USED AS A LIVING SPACE OR A LIVING ROOF.
