PASTORS’ CONFERENCE. 21-22/10/2022
FIRST SESSION: WHO IS A PASTOR.
The pastor is a shepherd of God’s flock. He is the one who protects and nurtures those
under him. Loving care and concern are implied.
According to Psalm 23, the Great Shepherd, my Lord
a) Provides for my physical needs. (v. 2) Making me to lie down in green pastures; He
leads me beside the quiet waters.
b) Provides for my psychological needs. (v. 3) He restores my soul. “Soul” is used in the
Old Testament as the seat of man’s person. It is the seat of his personality and life.
c) Provides for my spiritual needs. (v. 3) guiding me in the path of righteousness.
Righteousness conveys the thought of right living, or living according to God’s
principles. Notice it is for His name’s sake.
d) Protects me from death and evil. (v. 4) Even though I walk through the valley of the
shadow of death, I fear no evil; for Thou art with me. Observe that death is only a valley
and shadow. The great deliverance is found in His presence.
e) Provides correction and comfort for me. (v. 4) Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.
f) Protects me from my enemies and provides for me in their presence. (v. 5) Thou dost
prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
g) Provides healing and anointing for my life. (v. 5) Thou have anointed my head with oil.
h) Provides for my life abundantly. (v. 5) My cup overflows.
i) Provides goodness and mercy for me both now and forever. (v. 6) Surely goodness and
lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of
the Lord forever.

THE PASTORAL MINISTRY.

Pastoral ministry is when an appointed leader (also known as a “pastor,” “shepherd,”
"priest" or “bishop”) guides people in meeting their spiritual needs through Christ. The
objective of pastoral ministry is to restore hope, faith and love in the hearts of God’s
followers
 Pastoral ministry is done by a shepherd which involving care, protection, provision, and
nearness to the flock.
 The ministers of the church are to provide for Christ’s lambs everything the Lord has
promised to them in his office as shepherd. Jesus’ way of shepherding his flock, along
with what he promised in the gospel, as foundational for the breadth of pastoral
ministry. Ministers should see that the flock are deprived of nothing, which contributes
to their continual growth, and increase in godliness. Pastoral ministry focuses, then on
growth in godliness. He does what is required by each circumstance, in each context.
 Why does the Lord choose pastors to do ministry? The Lord being the
 Lord of the church not visibly dwelling among us, he chooses pastoral work as a sort
of delegated work, not by transferring them his rights and honor, but only that through
their mouths he may do his work through chosen tools. There are five spiritual tasks
entails and four specifics for pastoral ministry.
Pastoral Ministry in a word
 The essential to the work of the pastor is watching. Watchfulness is never easy. It costs
time, energy, tears, and discipline from the pastor who is faithful to the chief Shepherd
in discharging responsibilities for the flock- (1Peter 5:1-4). Watchfulness is identified
by Hebrews as obedience (Hebrews 13:17).

PASTORS’ CONFERENCE. 21-22/10/2022
 Faithful shepherds keep watch over the spiritual lives of their flock. Pastors can only
keep watch over those whom they observe. They can only observe the changes, ups and
downs, struggles, and progress for those whom they know. They can only know those
in whom they invest their lives, labors, and prayers.
 Davis breaks down watchfulness into three areas:
 Pastors watch over the identity of the flock. You must know the people God has given
to you. This means you have a good relationships built through personal contact. Its
difficult to shepherd strangers.
 Pastors watch over the physical condition of the flock. You need to know what is
happening in their lives, what challenges or trials they face, what is happening in their
family relationships, how they get along with others etc. These issues will affect their
spiritual lives
 Pastors watch over the spiritual condition of the flock. We have positive and negative
sides.
 Pastor must be aware of the overpowering tendency every member of his flock has for
drifting away from Christ through the deceitfulness of sin (Heb. 3:12-13). We must
check our ministry to people in the door of pastoral work
 Pastors must shepherd each member of the flock to be full love and good deeds,
developing fully the spiritual gifts Christ has entrusted to them (Heb. 10:24-25). There
must be aims with preaching, discipleship, personal work, and communication, and
pastoral details that result in aiding the flock’s spiritual growth. That is watchfulness.

THE CALL OF PASTOR

 Anyone who desires the offices of a pastor needs the call of God. Even though there
are false pastors too (Ezekiel 13:6) those who are sincere should speak according to
what God wants not as man wants (see Duet. 18:20).
 Therefore, if you wish to be pastor there are certain things to be developed:
a) Know God personally
b) prepare yourself and
c) Develop a strong desire to work for God.
The call of God:
a) It is Spiritual (1 Cor. 2:14; Isa. 30:21).
b) It is God who does the calling (Jer. 15:16)
c) God calls in different ways e.g. Elisha, Amos, and Paul etc.
d) God uses our natural abilities to fulfill this calling.

PASTORS’ CONFERENCE. 21-22/10/2022
How you can know that God has called you:
a. By having deep desires/burden to follow God’s call and serve Him.
b. By the guidance of certain circumstances
c. By having some qualifications for the call
d. By the proof of others especially Christians.
e. By the way God blesses the work and your life.

THE CHARACTER OF A PASTOR

 The pastor’s character must develop both naturally and spiritually:
 Character is everything when it comes to the pastor/elder. It’s not that gifts, abilities,
training, and experience play no part in the work of the Christian pastor. Rather without
godly character, all gifts and abilities mean nothing. Without the evidence of character
described in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9, a pastor exercises his ministry as a
hypocrite, causing far harm than good for the body of Christ.
 Amazingly, aside from the requirement to teach and the restriction on being a new
convert (1 Tim. 3:2, 6; Titus 1:9), Paul does not ask for anything that shouldn’t be
present in any Christian. Above reproach, temperate, prudent, hospitable, gentle,
peaceable- all of these characteristics picture the regenerate person walking with the
Lord, serving others, and demonstrating the effects of the gospel.
 Faithfulness to the marriage vows, good home management, and self-control,
eschewing addictions, and not bullying others ought to be the norm for followers of
Christ.
 Why should Paul detail the kind of character needed in elders/pastors?
 Pastors need to live like those redeemed by Christ. They are Christians before they are
pastors. There is no amount of oratorical, leadership, or administrative skills can
compensate for a lack of godly character.
 They must be models for other believers to follow. Peter wrote, elders must be examples
to the flock (1 Peter 5:3). The imagination is that new Christians, living without any
previous example of a godly Christian life, particularly needed the model of the faithful
elders living before them as “an example of those who believe” (1 Tim. 4:12).
 Today, believers who are confused by the messages of a post- Christian world still need
pastoral examples to follow. Therefore, focusing on oddly character precedes
shepherding responsibilities.

PASTORS’ CONFERENCE. 21-22/10/2022
 To consider the character qualities Paul lists in 1 Tim 3:7 and others. The first
generation of Christian had liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons (Titus 1:12). So how would
these believers understand how to treat families, employers, employees, slaves-house
helps, masters and fellow believers? Paul offers the key for elders living as examples
of Christ’s disciples: pastors must have a godly home life.
 Natural characteristics:
1 Courage: to stand firm against carnal church members
2 Diligence: Hard work to build up the church and extend the kingdom.
3 Dignity – must not look foolish before your people as person.
4 Tact – doing the right things at the right time in right way and at the right place.
5 Courteous – being gentle and well-mannered (Prov 15:1)
6 Cleanness – This includes clothing, bathing, shaving haircuts, fingernail cutting,
clear mind and clean speech.
7 Punctuality – being on time.
8 Leadership – willingness to serve as a spiritual leader.

PASTOR’S PERSONAL CONDUCT

 Above reproach is the umbrella characteristic of an

elder (Titus 1:6; 1 Tim. 3:2). It controls all of his

life. Paul does not call on perfection, or else no one
could ever as an elder. But he does mean that
pastors will be conscientious about the way they
conduct their lives.
What does it look to be above reproach?
 Not self-willed (Titus 1:7). The pastor is not obstinate and arrogant in the way he acts,
refusing to live as though the world revolves around him.
 He avoids the unteachable spirit of one using rather than serving others and refuses to
trample over others to achieve his own desires.
 Not quick-tempered (Titus 1:7). The pastor is not hotheaded or short-fused.
Relationships matter to him, so he demonstrates patience and longsuffering with others.
 Not addicted to wine (Titus 1:7; 1 Tim. 3:3). On the island of Crete, the prominent
Dionysian cult included drunkenness as part of its worship. These Christian leaders

were never to be mistaken for leaders in the Dionysus cult. Self-control and restrain in
their appetites distinguishes them.
 Not pugnacious (applying force or violence) (Titus 1:7; 1Tim. 3:3). Pastors are not to
be bullies, or given to fighting or heavy-handedness. Their self-control does not quickly
seek to defend self, or battle to get the last word in a tense conversation. Here we see
the example of Christ: “while being reviled, He did not revile in return” (1 Peter 2:23).
Public life:
Three practical issues to be observed:
i) Appearance-
 A minister should be clean and tidy and well-presented according to the means at his
disposal
 Should Sit properly, walk upright and firmly.
ii) Speech
1. The minister’s speech must be clean and purposeful. Don’t talk carelessly and jokingly
(Titus 2:8).
2. Don’t develop a “minister’s voice, for preaching and pulpit speech. Speak cleanly,
naturally and firmly.
3. Don’t talk about things you have no knowledge of.
4. Don’t talk on and on – talk sparingly. Don’t bore people saying nothing
iii) Attitude
1. Manifest a good spirit – annoyance, misery etc., detract you from the ministry.
2. Manifest good manners – don’t be a noisy, unclean or greedy eater.
3. Manifest a good attitude – don’t have an aggressive attitude – thus being argumentative
and quarrelsome (2 Tim: 2:24)
4. Manifest humility – don’t be proud and arrogant, showing a “lording over” attitude (1
Pet. 5:2, 3)
 Notice: Heart damage has been done by men who claim to be in the church to serve,
but whose conduct does not show Christ.
 They speak the words of Scripture, but their lives don’t complement the message.
Remember Paul’s Warning to Timothy; “Watch your life as well as your doctrine” (1
Tim. 4:16)

SECOND SESSION: SALVATION.
Means;

 To rescue.
 To atone
 To preserve you from something bad to something good.
 To restore.
 To redeem.
 To reconcile.
Check on;

Ephesians 2:8 saved by His grace, not by our works.

1colosians 1:13 saved us from dominion of darkness to the kingdom of His son.

To understand salvation and its purpose, you should first know the nature of human beings
(fallen) and the nature of God (holy).

I. What is Man’s Condition outside God?

God created man as a three part being. He created man in the
image of God. Unfortunately, man fell from that state and the
human race has been thoroughly corrupted by sin in spirit, soul
and body.

A. Man is born in sin and a slave to it.

Sin entered the human race as a result of the original sin of Adam
and Eve. As a result of this, since all mankind came from Adam,
every human being is born with a sin nature.

Therefore, just as through one-man sin entered the world, and

death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all
sinned… Romans 5:12

While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of

corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is

brought into bondage. II Peter 2:19

The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are
corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none who
does good. The LORD looks down from heaven upon the children
of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek God.
They have all turned aside, they have together become corrupt;
there is none who does good, no, not one. Psalm 14:1-3

Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me.
Psalm 51:5

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to
his own way; and the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
Isaiah 53:6

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
I John 1:8

B. Man has no inclination toward God.

... for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God… Romans 3:23

And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the
world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their
deeds were evil.John 3:19

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked;

who can know it? Jeremiah 17:9

C. Man has no understanding of the things of God.

PASTORS’ CONFERENCE. 21-22/10/2022
But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God,
for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they
are spiritually discerned. I Corinthians 2:14

D. Man’s mind and conscience were affected by this separation from God.
To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled
and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and
conscience are defiled. Titus 1:15

And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by
wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh
through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above
reproach in His sight… Colossians 1:21-22

E. Man is spiritually dead.

And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins… Ephesians 2:1
F. Man is on the road to eternal damnation.
There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.
Proverbs 14:12

If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is

withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire,
and they are burned. John 15:6

…in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God,
and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the
presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power… II
Thessalonians 1:8-9

When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels
with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations
will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from
another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will
set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left…. Then He
will also say to those on the left hand, “Depart from Me, you cursed,
into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.”
Matthew 25:31-33, 41

He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not
believe will be condemned. Mark 16:16
II. Who is the source of Salvation?
Because man is born in sin and is powerless to remedy his own
condition, it is necessary that someone come to the rescue of man.
The word that is translated “salvation” in the Bible [sozo] means: to
save, rescue, deliver, heal. Who can save mankind from his sinful
condition.

A. Sinful man does not have the power to redeem another sinful man
None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God
a ransom for him… Psalm 49:7

He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall

not be greatly moved. Psalm 62:2

1. We cannot redeem ourselves through additional sacrifices of animals.

No other sacrifice is needed for our salvation. Christ’s work on

the cross was a complete work.

For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and
not the very image of the things, can never with these same
sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those
who approach perfect. For then would they not have ceased to
be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had
no more consciousness of sins. But in those sacrifices there is a
reminder of sins every year. For it is not possible that the blood
of bulls and goats could take away sins…And every priest
stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same
sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But this Man, after
He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the
right hand of God, from that time waiting till His enemies are
made His footstool. For by one offering He has perfected
forever those who are being sanctified. Hebrews 10:1-4, 11-14

2. Our dead ancestors cannot redeem us.

Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name

under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
Acts 4:12

B. God must take the initiative to redeem man.

1. God is our salvation.
Also draw out the spear, and stop those who pursue me. Say to
my soul, “I am your salvation.” Psalm 35:3
Truly my soul silently waits for God; from Him comes my salvation.
Psalm 62:1

2. Jesus is the only person through whom we can be saved.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one

comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6

III. How did God provide salvation for us in Jesus?

Thankfully God not only had a plan for our creation, but He also had
a plan for our redemption or salvation. Just as thoroughly as sin
contaminated mankind, God’s salvation will deliver or heal mankind.

Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may
your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming
of our Lord Jesus Christ. I Thessalonians 5:23

A. Jesus came to earth to live a life of obedience to God.

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being
in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with
God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a
bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. Philippians 2:5-7

B. Jesus would substitute His life for ours.

Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we
considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he
was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our
iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and
by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him
the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not
open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a
sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.
Isaiah 53:4-7
1. We would receive His righteousness.

For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we

might become the righteousness of God in Him. II Corinthians
5:21
2. He would receive our punishment of being dead and separated from
God.
For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if
One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who
live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died
for them and rose again. II Corinthians 5:14-15

For the wages of sin is death: but the gift of God is eternal life,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23

3. Jesus death would provide for a regeneration or rebirth of our old

spirit.
Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is
old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be
born?” Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless
one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom
of God.” John 3:3-5
IV. What must we do to receive this salvation?
A. We must believe in Jesus through faith.
But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed,
being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness
of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe.
For there is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the
glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the
redemption that is in Christ Jesus whom God set forth as a
propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His
righteousness, because in His Forbearance God had passed over the

sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present
time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the
one who has faith in Jesus. Romans 3:21-26

B. We must believe that He died and rose again.

Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to
you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also
you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you--
unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that
which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the
Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third
day according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen by Cephas,
then by the twelve. After that He was seen by over five hundred
brethren at once, of whom the greater part remains to the present,
but some have fallen asleep. I Corinthians 15:1-6

C. We must receive Him into our world to become children of God.

He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many
as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of
God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood,
nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. John
1:11-13
D. We must acknowledge Him as Lord of our lives.
….that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in
your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be
saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with
the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:9-10
V. From what must we saved?
A. We are saved from sin.
And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name
JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins. Matthew

B. We are saved from emptiness and the traditions of men.

…knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like
silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from
your fathers… I Peter 1:18

C. We are saved from our enemies.

That we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all
Who hate us… Luke 1:71
D. We are saved from the curse of the law.
Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become
a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on

E. We are saved from wickedness and lawlessness.

for good works. Titus 2:14
F. We are saved from being lost.
…for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost. Luke
19:10
G. We are saved from fear.
The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The
LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Psalm 27:1
H. We are saved from condemnation.
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ
Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the
Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me
free from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:1-2

A. God’s salvation is abundant.
O Israel, hope in the LORD; for with the LORD there is mercy,
and with Him is abundant redemption. Psalm 130:7
B. God’s salvation is eternal.
And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal
salvation to all who obey Him… Hebrews 5:9
C. God’s salvation is available now.
For He says: “In an acceptable time I have heard you, and in the
day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the accepted
time; behold, now is the day of salvation. II Corinthians 6:2

D. God’s salvation is for everyone.

Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized
in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you
shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to
your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God
will call.” Acts 2:38-39
E. God’s salvation is both complete and progressive.
1. Our spirits are saved when we are born again.
But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. I Corinthians 6:17
But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit
of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of
Christ, he is not His. Romans 8:9
2. Our souls are being saved through the work of the
Holy Spirit in sanctification.
…not by works of righteousness which we have done, but
according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of
regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit… Titus 3:5
3. Our bodies will one day be redeemed at the Second Coming of the
Christ.

Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly
waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.
Romans 8:28
Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall
all be changed—in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the
last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be
raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this
corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put
on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption,
and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to
pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in
victory. O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your
victory?” I Corinthians 15:51-5
VII. How should we respond to this great salvation?
A. We must not neglect this great salvation.
…how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at
the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by
those who heard Him…Hebrews 2:3
B. We must be glad and rejoice in His salvation.
Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to
you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.
Luke 10:20
But I have trusted in Your mercy; my heart shall rejoice in Your salvation.
Psalm 13:5
C. We must proclaim this salvation every day.
Sing to the LORD, bless His name; proclaim the good news of His
salvation from day to day. Psalm 96:2

you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that
we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do
not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the

Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom He has redeemed
from the hand of the enemy… Psalm 107:2
For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard. Acts 4:20

THIRD SESSION: REPENTANCE.

I. What does it mean for a person to repent?
A. Repentance is a change of mind resulting in a complete turnaround.
1. The word “repent” means to turn around and go the other way
regarding a matter. It refers to an internal change of heart and
mind that results in a new direction for the whole life.

2. Repentance is translated from an Old Testament Hebrew

word (Aram) meaning to turn back, to return, and to recover
and from a New Testament Greek word (metanoia) meaning a
fundamental changing of the mind.

3. Charles Finney defined repentance as an “intellectual and hearty

giving up of all controversy with God upon all and every point. It
implies a conviction that God is wholly right, and the sinner is
wholly wrong, and a thorough and hearty abandonment of all
excuses and apologies for sin.”

Therefore thus says the LORD: “If you return, then I will bring
you back; you shall stand before Me; if you take out the precious

from the vile, you shall be as My mouth. Let them return to you,
but you must not return to them. Jeremiah 15:19
B. Repentance is not to be seen as something negative but as a
doorway into God’s salvation.
For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation,
not to be regretted… (II Corinthians 7:10a)
II. What are some wrong concepts about repentance?
There are many concepts that have been confused with true repentance.
The tragedy is that if we accept any one of these false concepts it will
keep us from experiencing genuine repentance.

A. Repentance is NOT feeling “convicted” or sorry for what I have done.

Conviction of sin will always come before genuine repentance, but
not all who are convicted will truly repent.

And after some days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who
was Jewish, he sent for Paul and heard him concerning the faith in
Christ. Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the
judgment to come, Felix was afraid [KVJ, trembled] and answered,
“Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for
you.” Meanwhile he also hoped that money would be given him by
Paul, that he might release him. Therefore he sent for him more often
and conversed with him. But after two years Porcius Festus
succeeded Felix; and Felix, wanting to do the Jews a favor, left Paul
bound. Acts 24:24-27
B. Repentance is NOT feeling bad or a having a sense of regret
because of the consequences of our sin.
The Bible calls this kind of regret “worldly sorrow.” Worldly
sorrow is simply being sorry for “getting caught” or being sorry for
the resulting consequences of our sin but not necessarily being

sorry for the actual crime or offense committed. Someone may
regret that they fornicated because it resulted in an unplanned
pregnancy or a sexually transmitted disease, but this does not
equate to true repentance. Given the same set of circumstances this
person would probably repeat the same sin (II Corinthians 7:10).
…worldly sorrow brings death. II Corinthians 10b
C. Repentance is NOT saying “I am sorry” or even owning up to
or confessing what I have done.
Confession of sin is necessary for all true repentance, but many
people stop with simple confession and do not change their minds
and turn from their sin.
Even many support or recovery groups focus on sharing
testimonies and confessing bad behavior without a true inner
change. This is confession, but not necessarily complete
repentance.

D. Repentance is NOT asking for forgiveness or paying restitution

out of a sense of guilt to pacify an offended party.
Many people ask for forgiveness from the one they have hurt without
any real heart change taking place. This is often because they value
the relationship or hate the awkwardness that their sinful behavior
has produced
E. Repentance is NOT external change or reformation of lifestyle
with no heart change.
Reformation in this sense is simply trying to “turn over a new leaf”
in the strength of the natural man. This will never be successful
without a genuine heart change. This is true of many New Year’s
resolutions.
F. Repentance is NOT merely “believing” in God.
Many people will religiously claim to believe in God but are not

willing to repent. This is “mental faith.” Mental faith is merely the
mental acceptance and assent to a set of creeds or doctrines but
without any real change of heart and life. Even the demons believe in
God (Jam. 2:19).
You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even
the demons believe--and tremble!
G. Repentance is NOT “going to church” or being religious.
The Pharisees in Christ’s day were very religious but they were
hypocrites. John the Baptist challenged them to bring forth fruit
consistent with true repentance (Mt. 3:8). It is possible to maintain
a form of religion but never experience the genuine power of
repentance (II Tim. 3:5).
All of these things mentioned above may be aspects of true
repentance, but they are NOT true repentance in and of themselves.
III. Why is Repentance necessary?
A. God has commanded us to repent (Acts 17:30-31).
Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands
all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on
which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He
has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him
from the dead.

B. Without repentance we cannot be saved (II Cor. 7:10).

For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to
be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.
C. Without repentance we cannot perceive or experience the
Kingdom of God (Mt. 3:2; John 3:3, 5).
Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”… 5

Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of
water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”
D. Without repentance we are destined to be ruined by our sin
(Ezek. 18:30-32; Luke 13:3).
Therefore, I will judge each of you, O people of Israel, according to
your actions, says the Sovereign LORD. Turn from your sins! Don’t
let them destroy you! Put all your rebellion behind you, and get for
yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. For why should you die, O
people of Israel? I don't want you to die, says the Sovereign LORD.
Turn back and live! Ezekiel 18:30-32, NLT
E. Without repentance we will not build our life on a sure
foundation (II Tim. 2:19; Heb. 6:1-2).
Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this
seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone
who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” II Timothy
2:19
F. Without ongoing repentance we will lose our position of influence (Rev.
2:5).
Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the
first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your
lampstand from its place--unless you repent.
IV. What is the acid test for or fruit of true repentance?
If genuine repentance has taken place on the inside of man there will be
outward signs or fruits of this inward work. Although no one can judge
the heart of another, there should be external evidence that the heart has
been truly changed. John the Baptist did not merely accept the
Pharisee’s confession that they desired a baptism unto repentance; he
challenged them to also “bear fruits worthy of repentance” (Mt. 3:8).

If genuine repentance has taken place, it should be evidenced by the following:

A. Godly sorrow for sin (II Cor. 7:9-11).

B. Confession of sin and a plea for mercy (I John 1:9; Luke 15:21; 18:13-14).
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our
sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. I John 1:9
C. Turning from or forsaking of sinful ways (Pro. 28:13; Acts 19:17-20).
He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and
forsakes them will have mercy. Proverbs 28:13
D. Renunciation of sin (Ezek. 14:6; Acts 19:18-20; II Cor. 4:2).
Therefore say to the house of Israel, “This is what the Sovereign
LORD says: Repent! Turn from your idols and renounce all your
detestable practices!” Ezekiel 14:6, NIV
And many who had believed came confessing and telling their
deeds. Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought
their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they
counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces
of silver. So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed.
Acts 19:18-20
The word renounce in the New Testament literally means “to say
off for oneself” or “to disown.”
E. Godly hatred for sin (Ezek. 36:31-33).
“Then you will remember your evil ways and your deeds that were
not good; and you will loathe yourselves in your own sight, for your
iniquities and your abominations. Not for your sake do I do this,”
says the Lord GOD, “let it be known to you. Be ashamed and
confounded for your own ways, O house of Israel!” Thus says the
Lord GOD: “On the day that I cleanse you from all your iniquities,
I will also enable you to dwell in the cities, and the ruins shall be
rebuilt.” Ezekiel 36:31-33

F. A positive change in one’s behavior or putting on the new man

(Acts 26:20; Eph. 4:22-24; I Th. 1:9; Col. 3:1-14).
…that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man

which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed
in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which
was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
Ephesians 4:22-24

G. Restitution for the wrongs done, wherever possible (Lev. 6:1-7; Luke
19:8).
But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here
and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have
cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the
amount.” Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this
house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.” Luke 19:8-9
H. A fresh earnestness in the things of God (II Cor. 7:11b).
See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness,
what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm,
what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done.
V. What are the results of true repentance?
A. We experience life (Ezek. 18:32; John 10:10).
I have come that they may have life,
and that they may have it more abundantly. John 10:10b
B. There is a pardoning and remission of sins (Is. 55:7).
Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his
thoughts; let him return to the LORD, and He will have mercy on
him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.
C. We live in continual prosperity (Dan. 4:27).
Therefore, O king, let my advice be acceptable to you; break off
your sins by being righteous, and your iniquities by showing mercy
to the poor. Perhaps there may be a lengthening of your prosperity.
D. We are refreshed by the Lord (Acts 3:19).
Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted
out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the

Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of
God over one sinner who repents. Luke 15:10

FOURTH SESSION: WORSHIP. (JOHN 4:24).

Christians today have a very truncated understanding of biblical worship. When asked to
define the word, they respond by saying, "It's singing," or "It's praising God." Worship, from a
biblical perspective, is far more than merely singing or praising God in the assembly of the saints (as
right and wonderful as that is).

As Christians we should know that, worship is the act of attributing relevant honor and
homage to God.
Therefore, worship is the relevance or adoration that one shows toward something or someone,
holding a person or an object in a high esteem; or giving a person or an object a place of importance
or honor.
It is so paramount to note that, it is a Biblical mandate that we worship God and Him alone.
It is an act that is designed not only to, bring honor to Him who deserves honor, but also to bring a
spirit of obedience and submission to the worshiper.

Human beings are created to be image bearers. To be an image bearer, is to act as a mirror,
reflecting the image of whatever god you are worshipping onto the rest of creation.

Therefore, you should know;

 Every human being worships something, whether God, sex, power, fame or something else.
 Worship does not imply singing just songs on Sunday morning but we worship whatever we
love most, magnet that has the greatest pull on our hearts.

Note from the saying….. ‘At the heart of our being is the kind of love pump that can never be
turned off’.

PASTORS’ CONFERENCE. 21-22/10/2022

Now the question is not whether we worship but what we worship?

 Whatever has captured our deepest affection, whatever becomes our focus of our attention
and whatever consumes our energies and our passion is what we become like.

 We act as image bearers of whatever god we are worshipping is because we are actually
transformed into the image of that god.

THE STANDARD OF WORSHIP FROM THE BEGINNING.

a. Those who offer God worthless gifts despise the name of the Lord (1:6-8)
 The charge of despising the name

Malachi follows this with two rhetorical questions from God: “If I am a father, where is my honor; if I
am Lord, where is my fear?” says Yahweh of armies to you, O priests, who despise my name.” This
was their spiritual relationship with God. The accusation is clear: they were not honoring nor fearing
the Lord, and so they did not really consider him their father or their master. It is possible to be in
attendance in a worship service, go through all the ritual and sing all the hymns, and yet despise the
Lord.

The priests thought they were doing everything right, saying the prayers and the blessings, and making
all the right sacrifices; so they responded (at least Malachi knows how they would respond), “Wherein
have we despised your name?” Even if they made a mistake here or there in the service, it did not mean
that they despised the name of the Lord, did it?--so they would reason. But Malachi said the Lord said
otherwise.

 The charge explained

The Lord said through the prophet that they were offering on the high altar defiled food. The altar was
the place of sacrifice, of course; and the charge was that what they were offering to God did not measure
up to the standards.

This was a serious charge because of the requirements in the Law. They were supposed to bring
sacrifices that were perfect--healthy animals, without any blemish at all. There were two very important
reasons for this. First, the sacrifice was a gift that was to be offered to God.

27
REV. YEKOSANI KWALINGA. 0774661532. ILOLI ISAAC. 0777029616
Email: mblevisionch@gmail.com Email: isaaciloli02@gmail.com
PASTORS’ CONFERENCE. 21-22/10/2022

Second, theologically the animal sacrifice was for atonement, signifying that the perfect animal would
be offered in place of the sinner. Since the animal represented God’s provision for the sins of the
worshiper, it had to be without blemish itself. This principle came to fulfillment in the sacrifice of Christ
on the cross: he was the sinless Lamb of God who gave his life for the sins of the world. If Christ had
been defiled, a sinner, his death would have been no better than our own deaths. The only one who
could redeem us from sin was the only one who was sinless.

So to bring defiled offerings was serious. And they knew it. But they challenged this as well: “Wherein
have we defiled you?”

The standard in worship from the beginning is that God gets the first and the best. The first-born
animal, the first fruit from the trees and the field, go to God; and whatever is given to God has to be
perfect, it has to be the best. This is true of physical gifts as well as spiritual service. Our money, our
time, our service--God’s people must give the best they have to him; and in all things he must have the
pre-eminence (Col. 1:18).

b. Those who are guilty of worthless worship must seek God’s favor to continue to
be his people (1:9-11)
 The instruction to find favor

They have a choice. If they feel that they have violated the holy things, then all they can do, and do
quickly, is pray to the Lord for forgiveness (v. 9).

 The need to prevent vain worship

But on the other hand, if they are going to keep worshiping like this, the prophet declares, “O that
someone would shut the doors so that you might not kindle fire on my altar gratuitously.” Malachi
thinks it is better to lock the doors of the temple and keep the people out. If they continue to worship
this way, then the fire they light on the altar will be worthless.
 The prophecy of gentile worship

What would be the outcome of shutting down the temple and keeping false worship out? Turning to the
Gentiles. In verse 11 we have one of the early predictions of Gentile faith: if the Israelites reject the
Lord, the nations will not. So, from the rising of the sun to its setting, the Gentiles will worship him.
c. Those who would worship the Lord must change their attitude or they may be
cursed (1:12-14).

28

PASTORS’ CONFERENCE. 21-22/10/2022

This attitude prevails today in so many circles of worship where the ritual has become a routine, then a
drudgery. People go through the service, but it is something to endure. And sometimes ministers, for
one reason or another, might become bored, or indifferent, perhaps burned out.

 The warning of deceiving the lord

The Lord asks through the prophet, “When you bring injured, crippled and diseased animals to offer
them as sacrifices, should I accept them from your hands?” What an insult! The message concludes
with a curse: “Cursed is the deceiver who has in his flock an acceptable male [sacrifice], and offers to
God a blemished thing”--literally, a ruined or corrupt thing (the word is used for things like spoiled
milk) (see Deut. 8), or even their lives, as he did in Acts 5 when Ananias and Sapphira lied to God about
what they were giving. So God will not long tolerate false worship; he will get rid of it, or as John warns
in Revelation 2 and 3, he will remove the candlestick”

TRUE WORSHIP.

True worship is the valuing or treasuring of God above all things.

The inner essence of worship is the response of the heart to the knowledge of the mind when the
mind is rightly understanding God and the heart is rightly valuing God.

The Apostle Paul described True Worship perfectly in “Romans 12:1-2” I urge you therefore brethren,
by the mercies of God to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, acceptable to God which is your
spiritual service of worship.

MAIN SCRIPTURE: (JOHN 4:19-24)

Consider these questions;

 Whom to worship?

 Where to worship?

 When to worship?

True worshippers worship in truth and spirit.

Worship in truth.(Vs 24)

 Means sincere worship without deceitfulness. (Accounts for faithfulness).

 Means adoration from the depth of your heart.

Heart is the subject here. And the process of change truthful worship is;

HEART MIND ACTIONS LIFE.

Galatians 5:24-25.
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passion and desire.
Also Galatians 2:20.
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live
now in the body, I live by faith in the son of God, who loves me and gave himself for me.

Worship In The Spirit.(Vs 24)

Means connecting to the spirit of God.
How do you connect to the spirit of God?
Always remain in Christ.
(John 15:4-7)
Remain in me and I will remain in you.
One must get born of the spirit.
(1corinthians 2:9-14 and also Matthew 7:21-22)
Without the spirit of God, we cannot understand;
 His will.
 His plans

CHARACTERISTICS OF TRUE WORSHIP.

1. Worship is God-Centered.
Worship should be God-Centered rather than ourselves to all about use. Clearly worship is only
directed at the true and living God but not idols of the heathen. (Exodus 20:3-5)
2. Worship is spiritual
John 4:24 teaches us that since God is sprit, we must worship Him in sprit and Truth. This
means that, we worship by the power of sprit of Christ.
Therefore, worship is not outward. Rather worship arises from the heart.
3. Worship is truthful
In the chapter of John 4:24, we worship God according to truth, thus why we worshipping God is
the way He tells us to in His word.

Worshipping God in truth implies that it is a great evil to allow false teaching or false conceptions
about God to enter our worship.

4. Worship is reverent
According to Isaiah chapter 6, the angles depicted, who covered themselves with their wings
when in God’s presence.
5. Worship is Joyful.
Worship is festive and celebratory as seen in psalms, speaking about making a joyful noise to
God.
6. Worship is congregational.
We worship as the body of believers, meaning that in worship we all draw near to God to
ascribe to Him worth and to extol that worth thus why church attendance is very imperative.
7. Worship is sacrificial.

REASONS WHY WE NEED TO WORSHIP.

1. We Worship to surrender of our lives
In Romans 12:1 says “I urge you brother and sister to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice,
Holy and pleasing God.
2. We worship to put our focus on Him
True worship is based on the desire to honor God whereby it requires personal Revelation of
God as found scripture. It is focus on Him thus why we worship.
3. To get out of then way.
Worship is done to have learn to remove our worries, our opinion, our questions and ourselves,
so we can worship with appropriate honor. It’s letting go.

4. To involve personal sacrifice
Worship requires a sacrifice of our own feelings and fears so we can give Him the focus He
deserves. (Hebrews 13:15)
5. We must worship in the Face of pain and loss.
King David demonstrated what it means to worship in the face of loss and pain. His baby died
but she prayed even is the baby died. Then David got up from the ground, After he had washed, put
on lotions and changed his clothes, he went into the house of the lord and worshiped. (2samuel
12:20).
6. Should celebrate who God is and what He has done.
Shout for joy to the lord all he earth, for the lord is good and His love endures forever; His
faithfulness continues through all generation (Psalm 100:1-5)
