19. Other learning resources used (e.g. e-Learning, field visits, periodicals, software, etc.):
• Studio: The main method is studio tutoring, involving the instructor of the course with one
student at a time except at during reviews, when a panel of outside tutors (minimum 2) may be
involved. There is one interim jury, at which the students will present the schemes as they
develop for peer review and guidance. Online teaching is the only option during COVID
outbreaks, so please be aware of the situation and plan accordingly.
• Research Assignments: At the beginning, students will carry out research on materials and
technologies, choose structural systems and materials to build with and then conceive a suitable
form for the project.
• Students Presentations: Knowledge so gained is complimented by students’ own research
work and presentations, which are delivered as part of the studio.
20. Course description (as per the published):
Architectural Design VII is the last advanced level studio before Senior Projects where
students are expected to demonstrate the knowledge and architectural design skills they
have gained so far by working on highly complex design problems in different contexts
and with equal emphasis on cultural, environmental, social and technical issues of
10,000m2 maximum.

PROJECT BRIEF
THE BAHRAIN NATIONAL SPACE SCIENCE AGENCY (NSSA)
HEADQUARTER IN BAHRAIN

1.0 OVERVIEW
The Bahrain National Space Science Agency (NSSA) was established by a Royal Decree, with his
Majesty’s vision “To promote Bahrain to a position of international prominence in the field of space
science to achieve comprehensive and sustainable development”. NSSA focuses on harnessing
space technologies for national development, promoting space science and applications,
developing advanced space research programs, ensuring capacity building, and creating a new
space sector in the Kingdom.
The National Space Science Agency (NSSA) plans to set up a campus that occupies all its
buildings and assets. This project's objective is to develop several designs and layouts for NSSA’s
campus.

2.0 PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT

Bahrain has for decades been a pioneer of space science. Bahrain has a high potential for
developing space science. In this project, you are required to design a NSSA head quarter (office
building). You should define what space science are based on your own analysis, case studies,
and research. Your project can focus on one of the themes including space science and satellite
issues, etc.
Students will come up with different proposals that will be reflected in the design of the building.
There is no one answer or one design to the idea of headquarter of a space science agency. The
following is the purpose of the project:
• To develop an understanding of the complex concept of headquarter.
• To develop a sustainable model to define global space science.
• To understand the complex relationships between the different components of the
headquarter complex.
• To provide scientific labs and technical spaces for creative thinkers to create a unique
building.
• To assist young creative minds in making a mark in the art/design fields by providing them
with the platform to show their works and promote them nationally and globally.
• To promote space science knowledge in Bahrain.
• To create a communal space to learn and study different technical space science issues.
• To locate Bahrain on the global scene.

2.1 Proposed Land

The proposed land for NSSA campus will be located in Al Ghaynah with an approximate land area
of 200,000m2 (Figure 1 and Figure 2). This site is still proposed, but neither the location nor the
area is confirmed.

3.0 PEDAGOGIC OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
This kind of design project empowers architecture students at this level of their studies with the
following:
• Development of architectural design for creating multipurpose spaces that suit the
different activities within the NSSA headquarter (space science office building).
• Analyze, understand, and define what a space science and headquarter can be – there is
no one answer but multiple.
• Use of multilayered functional diagrams and analysis.
• Understand the importance of modules and metric grids in architectural design.
• Site analysis with relation to context and multifunction requirements.
• Apply design criteria and standards.
• Consider style and identity concerning the type of such project.
• Study building orientation and technical requirements regarding basic sustainable
principles.

4.0 SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Control various space functions –spaces, labs, workshops, library, exhibition, café, etc.
• Attention to dimensions and proportion of spaces according to function.
• Space flexibility to allow for different functions (resilience plan for the future, for different
seasons, etc)
• Suitability of the building for the needs of different abilities users and people with
disabilities.
• Availability of fire exits.
• Outdoor space for different activities.

5.0 COMPONENTS OF NSSA CAMPUS PROJECT

The building will occupy around 90 employees within the next 20 years. The main building area
shall be approx. 3000 m². Consider that the main building will be built in the first phases.
As per the NSSA present and future needs, several elements components are required:
• which are the main building(s).
• antenna farm.
• and other supporting outdoor facilities.

However, these elements are the bare minimum required, and additional facilities or buildings
can be added. Table 1 illustrates the general requirements.

5.1 Main Building

• Reception.
• Administrative offices
• Conference & Exhibition Hall
• Mission Control Room: Satellite image and data analysis laboratory
• Laboratories: Satellite Design, Manufacturing & Testing laboratories
• Server room
• Other building facilities (e.g. conference room, reception, security room, Security, toilets,
Prayer room, kitchen, store, etc.).
