Discussion Forum 5 – Ecological Footprint

This assignment relates to the following Course Learning Requirements:

 CLR 1 - Explain the concept of environmental citizenship and provide examples demonstrating the roles
and responsibilities of people within the global ecosystem.
 CLR 2 - Relate the history of environmental trends to contemporary society and to future direction.
 CLR 3 - Explain the relationships between poverty, education, health and environmental sustainability
 CLR 5 - Explain the concept of ecological footprint and identify ways in which personal environmental
impact can be mitigated.

Objective of this Assignment: In this discussion forum you are to think beyond the concept of connections
with the world around you, focusing primarily on your own individual relationship.

Instructions:

1. Focus on the following questions to help formulate and encourage discussion:

 What is the significance of ecological footprint?

 Why is the ecological footprint of developing countries generally smaller than that of developed
countries?
 Based on what you’ve explored so far, what do you think the ecological footprint of urban versus rural
areas would be in general terms? Would the same logic hold true in both developed and developing
countries?

2. A full 4% grade for participation can be achieved by posting at least twice in the Discussion Forum (quantity =
2%) and by posting meaningful messages that promote discussion (quality = 2%). This could be either
responding to the questions posed, responding meaningfully to your colleagues postings, or posting your own
original message related to the lesson topic related to your own experiences or observations.

Note about Discussion Forums: Participation in the course Discussion Forums is worth 20% of your final grade.
There are 9 Discussion Forums in this course and you are required to participate in at least 5 of them (with a score
of 4% each possible from the 5 you choose). If you participate in more than 5 Discussion Forums, the participation
component of your grade will reflect the highest 5 scores.
