A spring apply piston kit should only be used after the following checks have been performed.
1) Dipstick is calibrated
2) Oil level is checked
3) Engine idle is within manufacturer’s specifications
4) Driveline and axle backlash are within manufacturer’s specifications

Spring apply piston kits have been released to provide a means of improving neutral-to-drive engagements. The
kits are for service only and not available from production. The kits consist of a modified forward clutch piston,
24 springs and Instruction Sheet No. 264. The pistons are identical to production released pistons except for the
24 machined spring bores. Refer to Figure 1 for identification of the spring apply pistons.
The 24 springs do not have a specific color code but can be identified from the following chart.

The following kits are available from the Parts Distribution Center. The lo-Plate Stack consists of 5 steel plates
and 5 friction plates in the forward clutch assembly, The 12-Plate Stack has 6 steel plates and 6 friction plates in
the forward clutch assembly. Refer to the appropriate Parts Catalog to identify if you have the lo-Plate Stack or
the 12-Plate Stack.
The spring apply piston assembly is fully interchangeable with the production released piston.

Notice that this kit includes a specially modified forward clutch piston. This piston has been machined to accept the
springs that are also included in this kit.
The build-up of the forward clutch assembly containing the spring apply piston is accomplished by the following.
2) Make sure a steel, external-tanged clutch plate is installed against the piston and spring assembly.
3) Build the forward clutch assembly from this point as described in its respective Service Manual.
4) Check the forward clutch clearance by the method shown in Figure 2 (do not use the stack method to check
clearance).

If the clearance is not found to be within its appropriate range, verify the correct number of plates are in the assembly and
check clearance again. If the clearances are still not within the clearance range, contact the Allison Service Department.
