Research Title Defense

This document outlines a research study that aims to test the effectiveness of a baking soda and lemon solution as an antifungal treatment for Fusarium head blight, a common fungal disease that infects corn crops. The study seeks to determine how long the solution's effects last on corn and what ingredients and preparation steps are needed to make the solution. If shown to work, using this low-cost solution could help protect farmers' crops and profits while ensuring safe food for consumers. It may also support the Philippines' agricultural economy and export market.

I. INTRODUCTION

According to the Philippines Agricultural Import Market Share the Philippines is

the seventh-largest market for U.S. agricultural exports and the top market in Southeast
Asia. One of the most harvested crops in the Philippines is corn, it reaches over eight
million metric tons in 2021. Of course, all crops, including corn, may have or be infected
with a virus or disease that can cause their destruction. One of the most common
diseases that your crops can get is fungi. Fungi constitute the largest number of plant
pathogens and are responsible for a range of serious plant diseases.

The most common and serious type of fungi in corn is Fusarium head blight.
Fusarium head blight (FHB), also known as scab, is a fungal disease of small grain
cereals including wheat, barley, oats, and corn. Fusarium head blight is caused by
several species of the fungal genus Fusarium, it is favored by warm, humid conditions
during flowering and early stages of kernel development. FHB in corn can damage
kernels and result in the loss of grain yield and quality. Since FHB can produce
mycotoxins, it can be a potential health risk to both humans and animals, it can also
affect the production of corn in Philippines.

II. RESEARCH PROBLEM

1. How can you say that the lemon and baking soda are effective as antifungal (for
Fusarium head blight) in corn?
2. How long does the effect of lemon and baking soda solution will last on corn?
3. What will be the components/ingredients to use to make a lemon and baking
soda solution? What are the preparation/steps?

III. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study aimed to develop more effective fungicide against fungi especially in
Fusarium head blight.

● For the farmers: This study aims that baking soda and lemon solution as a
fungicide may help them to protect their crops against fungi.

● For the consumers: This study aims that baking soda and lemon solution as a
fungicide may help them to ensure that the fruits or vegetables they're buying
from the farmers or market is safe from fungi.

● For the government: This study aims that baking soda and lemon solution as a
fungicide may help the economy because it improves the quality of the crops and
even the production rate of it, so it means this can enlarge the exportation rate of
agricultural products of the Philippines worldwide.

● And, for the future researchers, the result of this research may be a basis of
further studies and can be used as related literature.
