Using both printed and electronics media, research on the current relationship between China
and the Philippines. Consider the economic, political, and social factors. Discuss the impact of
Chinese culture on contemporary Philippine society and compare it with the impact of Chinese
culture on 19th century Philippines.
Even before the Spaniards arrived, China and the Philippines have long been trading. It
was the beginning of a major influence and contribution to our culture. The Chinese's increasing
presence in the Philippines is evident. In terms of economic, political, and social factors, our past
and current relationship with China is irrefutable.
Culinary arts were one of the main cultural contributions made by the Chinese. Bihon,
pancit, Lomi, Mami, sotanghon, and hopia were just some of the cuisines that we Filipinos love.
We were taught a lot of culinary techniques that up until today, we still carry on. Furthermore,
the Filipino family structure that is authoritarian and firm is heavily influenced by the Chinese
way of life. We addressed older brothers as "Kuya" and "Ate" for older sister. Like the Chinese
family values, the older brother and sister have authority over the younger ones.
At present, Chinese New Year is heavily celebrated in the Philippines, for many Chinese
and Filipino-Chinese resides in the country. Between 1741 and 1898, Chinese mestizos rose to
prominence, primarily as landlords and middleman distributors of local goods and imports. The
Philippines is known as the home of the many successful Chinese-owned businesses, which
made us reaped a lot of economic benefits. Some of the notable Chinese businessmen in the
Philippines are Henry Sy, Lucio Tan, and Andrew Tan.
As of late, the Philippines' and China's bilateral relations have significantly improved
with the current administration. During the administration of former President Benigno Aquino
III, they filed and won the arbitration case against China which legally secured our Exclusive
Economic Zone in the West Philippine Sea, invalidating Beijing's nine-dash line claim over the
disputed waters. However, a rift in our relationship with them might occur with the rising
conflict with China over our sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea.
Faced with a global health crisis, countries worldwide have reached out to one another in
an attempt to contain the coronavirus pandemic. With Covid-19 affecting millions of lives, China
was one of the first countries to extend its hands to the Philippines when the cases surged. On
April 17, the Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian said that the Philippines had
received 100,000 testing kits, 100,000 surgical masks, 40,000 N95 masks, 50,000 personal
protective equipment, 5,000 face shields, and 30 ventilators. A team of 12 experts was also sent
to share best practices for treating patients infected with the coronavirus, which was first found
in China, the City of Wuhan. A million kilograms of rice, a million doses of Sinovac, and
thousands of Sinopharm vaccines were also donated by China. With the number of donations
made, I can't help but wonder if the donations were spontaneous or is there a motive behind it.

With the Filipinos enraged over the current issues, I believe that the improving
relationship with China might deteriorate, especially now that Duterte's administration is coming
to an end. Most Filipinos firmly opposed allying with the Chinese because doing so would allow
them to dominate over the West Philippine Sea. Nonetheless, the cultures and traditions they had
imparted in us will remain and continuously grow, just like how the westernized culture
remained.
